listen, i’m not trying to be nasty and ‘call out’ anybody but i can’t help but respond to this little tidbit because i feel as though it’s kind of missed the entire point of my post.

there really is no ‘part of it’ about it.

the light fury is not any different than the wild dragons we have already seen in the franchise. there is no difference between the light fury and any other wild dragon who came into contact with humans—good or bad—and then continued to live in the wild. the only difference between the light fury and gruff, is that one of these dragons is a minor character used to demonstrate the different dragons that live with valka’s bewilderbeast and aid in showing what kind of dragon valka is, while the other dragon is a plot device for toothless to fall inescapably in love with and pop out his marketable offspring.

and the dragons in httyd are not domesticated. domestication is a process that spans so many years it’ll make your head spin. the only reason why the light fury’s ‘‘‘wildness’’’ is so ‘‘‘unimaginably high’’’, so ‘‘‘uncontrollable’’’, compared to every other dragon in this franchise and is, strangely, completely unique to her is entirely because they didn’t want her to be a character. she was never meant to be a character, because they made her as a plot device.

ultimately this is gonna be the reason why i will never understand people who insist that the light fury as character is perfectly fine. because she’s not fine, she’s not even an actual character.

she’s a plot device. dean deblois said this himself. she is the generic wife mate to toothless and mother of his offspring. these are objective facts. i actually think that it’s almost gross that dart, ruffrunner, and pouncer have more actual personality and character than she does. this isn’t even mentioning thunder, the “descendant of the great alpha toothless,” as they say with a much quieter, less grandiose mention of light fury. because oh right, she’s here too, we guess. and not at all a narrative object we threw in here just so toothless could reproduce.

and that’s thing: most, if not the entirety of the light fury’s popularity comes from what she could have been. headcanons, redesigns, fix-its and alternate endings and alternate universes. fanon. made up. nothing but hopes and dreams.

“queen of the hidden world,” but is and or was she really? i feel like being the queen of all dragons would at least get you mentioned as such instead of just as the ‘king’s wife’, essentially.

I think a massive sin Dreamworks committed is setting up spin-off bait with the Hiccup/Astrid kids and Toothless/LightFury kids meeting, and then making The Nine Realms instead. Like, the ending of Naruto sucked hard just so they could have kids for spin-off bait, but at the very least they succeeded with making their next-gen spin-off, however shitty it may be. Now it feels like HTTYD3's ending just sucked for no reason, I guess. Could've made a show with Zephyr/Nuffink/Nightlights protags (and a tearjerking Hiccup/Toothless reunion) but nope, we need some random modern kids and the awful-looking inbred dragons instead. Make it make sense.

hm, okay, while i do think the end of homecoming could have been used as a jumping off point for a future series with the way they had zephyr and toothless meet at the end, i also fully believe that they—incredibly ironically—wrote themselves into a hole, which is why the nine realms is the way it is.

they made httyd: thw, which, however bleak it is, is still a conclusion to the franchise. but they still wanted to make money off the intellectual property, so they kept asking themselves, “how can we have dragons when we said we can never ever have dragons again?” so that’s how we got homecoming and the nine realms.

the funny thing is, i don’t think the main idea of the nine realms is bad. really! like, instead of the way the nine realms approaches it, think about it like this instead,

centuries after the dragons all leave for the hidden world, let’s say there is a collective realization that things cannot continue this way—i.e living in the battle dome that is the hidden world—and they all just leave. it’s a massive event; think of something similar to the mass titan awakening in godzilla: king of the monsters. a lot of dragons die, a lot of people die, but in the midst of the chaos, there are humans doing awful things to dragons, but also humans trying to figure out how to coexist with them, and amidst those humans and dragons, just so happens to be the far far far descendants of hiccup and toothless!

you could even have the scene where the descendants of hiccup and toothless find their ancestors stuff and while respectful of hiccup and toothless’ history, consider their choices harmful in the long run and pick up the good fight that toothless forced himself and hiccup to abandon.
