Vaguely unsettling scans of the pipes and mask I made for my Piper piece because you can’t see them super well in the final image and I worked hard on them !

I have been having thoughts about the distortion. As much as I love skinny long spiral man its never been how I imagined him, but I was never quite sure what about it didn’t fit. And then I was doing some research for my tma uni project and I remembered Louis Waine’s cats.

I think in my head these are more similar to how the distortion would look in its truest form- the fractal patterns and psychedelic colours splitting outwards away from the centre of its face. And also I like art history and I love Louis Waine and the reference works subtextually for the distortion which is fun! All those side by side comparisons showing his cat cartoons next to his fractal cats that say “look we can see this poor schitzophrenic artist’s decent into madness!“ are incorrect and piss me off to no end, he was drawing both styles consistently throughout his life and most of it can just be seen as his own artistic developement with roots in his training as a textile designer HOWEVER, he did definetly struggle a great deal with his mental health. Anyway, I think that the distortion looks like one of Louis Wain’s cats. Not all the time and maybe not in exactly the same way- most of the time it just looks like a regular person, but I think when it wants to it can shift its features like a kaleidoscope, maybe only when you’re not looking directly at it. Out of the corner of your eye you see it shift like sharp water, or its reflection splinters in a mirror. And then you look directly at it and it’s just Micheal or Helen again.

I need to draw this properly but in the meantime here’s a drawing of my real friend’s face splitting open :)
