Oh fuck me, I just realized. Not only is the whole recurring refrain of "Noé tries to catch people (especially Vanitas) when they fall" a metaphor for his general desire to save the doomed and suffering. Literally the first action we see him take in the entire series is catching somebody (Amelia) when she falls.

Noé's introduction is him reaching out to save a suffering person on instinct. It's him (without even knowing it's what he's doing) trying to help a curse-bearer. It's him literally catching somebody as she collapses. That's his whole fucking thing right there.
