What a difference 50 years make juxtaposition of Volkswagen Polo, 1975 & Volkswagen Polo, 2025. VW's sub compact hatchback started life as the Audi 50 having initially been developed as a new small NSU. It was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone with styling finalised at Audi. The first generation model was only available as a 3 door hatchback. The model has developed through 6 generations and is currently only available as a 5-door hatchback.

Volkswagen Polo G40, 1990. The Polo is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. The G40 was a version of the second generation coupé model with a 1.3 litre supercharged engine. The G40s 'G-Lader' supercharger had a displacer width of 40 mm, hence the "G40" name.
