my favorite thing about ethan hunt is that he's a "real" character. probably not the best term but real in the sense that if my government job accused me of killing my team / found family i'd also go a bit postal trying to find who really did. if a terrorist strapped a bomb to my best friend i'd also give him fifty million bucks to let him go. if someone held my wife hostage and made me go halfway around the world to steal a life threatening virus you bet i'd be on that plane. maybe i wouldn't be as successful as ethan, nor would i handle it as well, but he's a dude who loves his friends and family and would do anything for them, and that's why he's relatable. his stunts aren't just for show they're motivated by love.

⚠️ The Final Reckoning Spoilers!

It destroys me how every word and expression Luther gives to Ethan in his final scene is entirely gentle and calm. He knows he has to die to save everyone, and must be terrified of everything - death, Ethan's future, the world's future. Yet, Luther chooses to put his feelings aside to try and make this horrific situation as easy as possible for his best friend, knowing Ethan's heart will break. It's utterly selfless, and man, I love Luther so much.

Keep seeing action movies where the hero is cocky and arrogant and outspoken and everytime he meets a woman or a tech guy they have to prove their worth to him and he wins every time and for some reason, we’re supposed to root for these heroes, even find them attractive.

And then along comes Ethan Hunt, who is kind and gentle even with strangers, who wants to save the whole world but especially his friends, respects the women and tech guys and basically everyone who isn’t some kind of management, is very intelligent; quite often does quite badly in a fight, is always really surprised when his crazy stunt wins and would die for you ten minutes after he met you.

He’s the one we all adore and yet movies keep giving us heroes of the type, not the second.
