Do you really think Anne Rice would approve of the show? No offense but the writing and character choices are antithesis to what she created and a true vc fan would know that.

Despite the obvious fact that you mean this as an insult and not actually a question, I’m going to answer in earnest.

I - or you - (or anyone else) can’t say with certainty what Anne Rice would have liked or not liked. Only she could have and unfortunately she’s not here anymore. I assume you view yourself as “a true VC fan” and honestly I don’t know or care what that even means.

I have read, re-read and loved the vampire chronicles for many years. In the adaptation, I was not seeking a documentary-style reenactment of the books. How incredibly boring that would be.

An adaptation takes the source material and creates something new. It asks and answers the question: “what new thing can one say through this work?” while remaining true to the heart of the story. And that is what this adaptation is doing. Very well, I might add.

Moving it forward in time allows us to experience Lestat and Louis in a time viewers can more readily recognize and connect to. Louis being a Black creole man at the turn of the century opens the narrative further, and it gives us a new and more interesting glimpse into the power imbalance between Lestat and Louis.

I want to be very clear about this: making Louis Black was a fantastic, incredible, flawless decision. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and not assume that your “character choices” comment wasn’t about Louis (and Claudia) being Black. These changes add something to the story that was very much missing.

Lastly, and I say this as a devoted fan of the chronicles: book Louis, with his plantation and constant whining, was not the one for me. I tolerated him as the other half of Loustat, mostly because of my love for Lestat.

Jacob Anderson brought Louis to life and made him a character to love and understand. There is no denying that.

I doubt that you sent me this “question” looking for true dialogue, but there you have it anyway.

Oh, and, one more thing: nobody is forcing you to watch the show. You can just…do something else.
