FAQ

Nolofinwëan week welcomes fan creations centering any members of the House of Fingolfin and their descendants through the ages. 

To Participate:

Create fanfiction, fanart, headcanons, close readings and musings, moodboards, photography, rec lists or anything else that inspires you to celebrate Nolofinwëan characters. 

Fingolfin, Anairë and all their descendants through the ages count as Nolofinwean characters. This includes people who have been married into the family, adopted, etc. Here’s the Nolofinwëan family tree as a reference.

For the purposes of this event, Gil-galad, son of Fingon, is considered a Nolofinwëan character. 

Mention the blog @nolofinweanweek in your post and include the hashtag #nolofinweanweek2025 in the first 10 tags. 

If you would like, add your work to the AO3 collection.

Take inspiration from the nonmandatory daily prompts.

Complete one or more of the community challenges.

Rules & Requirements:

There are no minimum or maximum requirements; anything goes!

Late submissions, submissions not following any prompts (or combining them, interpreting them loosely, etc.) are all welcome!

There are no content restrictions or rules on tagging beyond what AO3 requires of you. If you post to tumblr and your fill is Mature or Explicit, and/or falls under one of AO3's major warnings, please provide tagging on your post, though.

That said, please refrain from using genAI.

This fest operates firmly under the premises of ‘don’t like; don’t read,’ ‘ship and let ship’ and ‘your kink is not my kink but that’s okay’ (if you’re unfamiliar with these concepts, see this post). We will not tolerate any shaming, harassment, or attempts to police content.

Please be a respectful and encouraging community member! This means:

Do not repost content by other creators without their explicit permission. Please re-blog instead to support their work.

Please do not engage in any sort of unfair use of other people’s creations.

Respect other people’s headcanons and interpretations, even if you don’t share them.

Content and creators espousing any form of negativity, bigotry, aggression or discrimination against others will not be tolerated.

Disrespecting these rules will lead to being blocked from the event.

When Elladan and Elrohir are born, seabirds flock to Imladris, leaving colorful crystals and pearls outside the nursery. Gil-estel shines brighter than ever before and stays fixed in the sky above the hidden valley until dawn.

Celebrian hangs her law-mother's gifts over the twins' crib and Elrond takes them outside, wrapped cozily in the softest Numenorean wool, to look at his father's star.

Hail Elwing, Mother of Kings!

Elwing, Elrond and Elros as portrayed in a Númenorean manuscript.

Discover the secrets and story behind this precious relic in the fic Under the shadows of Her wings by @austerlitzborodinoleipzig on the 6th of September on AO3, in the @tolkienrsb 2024 collection.

I based this drawing on an illumination of the virgin Mary from the Books of Kells. Elwing is depicted here with the Silmaril on her breast and her sons on her lap, the wings gifted by Ulmo spread behind her.

My goal with this piece was to imagine how Elwing might have become a figure of popular faith in Númenor, especially for women. Eärendil is the star of High Hope, but who is Elwing for the people of Arda? She is the mother of the first king of Númenor, Tar-Minyatur, and as such, the object of a saint-like status. Elwing is the woman who lived despite everything, the one who carried hope to Valinor. She is of the line of Lúthien, blessed by the Valar, protector of women and desperate souls.

Lots of delightful Argon content is crossing my dash today, so let's add to the mix. I prefer that he exist, because he is such a bottomless vault of angst. Your favorite version of canon may vary, of course.
