Story time

Note: This took place in my freshman year of high school, so it was before I realized I’m asexual or even knew what that is.

My school had been doing several talks about peer pressure throughout the semester, and they frequently brought people up to the front to do a little skit related to whatever we were talking about. Now, these talks were done in a lecture hall win two or three classes put together, so there were about fifty people in there. Normally, I never volunteered to go up and do a skit because it was morning, and I didn’t have the energy to talk loud enough for everyone to hear. On the last skit we did though, they asked people to come up, and not enough people volunteered. I figured, you know what? It’s the last one, I like the speakers, why not go up and help them out? So I go out into the hall with the other volunteers and the speakers explain what they want us to do. Apparently our skit is about pressuring our friend into having sex. Immediately, I regret my decision. I’m thinking, what do I know about having sex? What do people like about it? I definitely don’t want it. Is that normal? Should I already want sex? I’m kind of panicking because I have no idea what to say, but everyone is ready, so I go back inside the room with them. The others start trying convince our friend to have sex, and I’m still trying to figure out what’s so appealing about it. Its messy, it seems like a lot of work, and ew: penis and vagina. I can’t think of one reason I would want it, but I’ve kind of just been awkwardly standing there, and the others look at me to say something. I blurt out a generic adjective, because I certainly don’t have a real reason. I’m trying to put feeling into it, so I say, “ It’s amazing.” And I think, yes, this something people say about sex right? Only, I was trying to put feeling into something I didn’t believe, so I stretched amazing out. It came out more like, “it’s amaaaaaazing.” Everyone laughs, and I think, “well, I guess that wasn’t the right response. Oh well, I tried and now I can just go back to my seat and pretend none of that just happened.” Of course, two of my friends were in the room and they would not let it go. Weeks later they would still call out to me with, “Hey Riley. It’s amaaaazing!” I’m sure everyone thought I really believed that about sex. I was always really quiet in class, so I probably came across as shy (I wasn’t). Im sure it was funny to think, “hey, shy girl thinks sex is amazing.” It’s been about six years since then, so I don’t keep up with those friends anymore, but I think it would be funny to see their reactions if I told them that I’m actually ace.

I’m taking a college psychology class this summer and I’m reading the chapter on gender, sex, and sexuality. So for all the people who say gender and sex are the same thing, here is the textbook definition of gender: 

“Gender refers to the social and psychological aspects of being female or male. Gender goes beyond biological sex to include a person’s understanding of the meaning of being male or female. “
