Intimacy

We fail to develop true intimacy with one another so often because we dismiss each other’s emotions. We disapprove of each other’s feelings. We tell each other how they should feel. We have no patience with the emotional needs of others. We see emotions and feelings as weakness. We call people who display emotions “too sensitive”.

Regardless of whether it is a friendship or a romantic relationship, feelings and emotions are the heart, are the core, of that particular relationship if it is suppose to be a meaningful relationship instead of a surface-y one. Without a healthy and deep emotional connection, and an emotional feeling relationship, that relationship is in fact not a relationship, it’s a social arrangement.

Intimacy is not about sex. It is true that sex can be the byproduct of intimacy, but intimacy is about being seen for who you really are, and seeing someone for who they really are. It’s me being able to take the totality of truth being who I am to you, and being received by you, for the truth of who I am without you needing to change me. It’s you being able to bring the truth of who you are to me, and me being able to see and receive the truth of who you are without me trying to change and manipulate you.

The word intimacy can be broken down to “into-me-see”. The most important part about intimacy is about being able to see into one another, to see into one’s truth, and one’s truth is represented in feeling and emotion. Feelings and emotions are the absolute reality and core of your experience and so it is the very most important part of intimacy.

How to be Mindful in your Daily Life

1. Allow and accept the different feelings you experience – knowing these will change throughout the day.

2. Don’t judge yourself for having negative feelings.

3. Don’t believe every thought that pops into your head. Some of these are true, but many will be false.

4. Slow down and take life at a manageable pace.

5. Stay in the present; do one thing at a time.

6. Let go of the need to control everything.

GOT FERROFLUID ARTIST?

Sachiko Kodama was born in Japan in 1970, and has lived in Shizuoka. As a child she spent a lot of time in the southernmost part of Japan. This area is rich in tropical flowers and plants, edged by the sea, and washed with warm rain. Sachiko loved art and literature from an early age, but also had a strong interest in science.

After Graduating Physics course in the Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University, in 1993, Sachiko matriculated in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Tsukuba, studying Plastic Art and Mixed Media. Then she completed Master’s and Doctoral Program in Art and Design at the University of Tsukuba.

She studied Computer and Holography Art in her doctral period, and received Ph.D. in Art.

In 2000, Sachiko began work on a ferrofluid art project that she named “Protrude, Flow”.

The dynamic movement of liquids is the theme of this project.

Her work has been exhibited at Ars Electronica Center/Linz, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Wexner Center for the Arts/Columbus, Skirball Cultural Center/Los Angeles, The National Art Center/Tokyo, Reina Sofia National Museum/Madrid, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
