Since I'm frustrated by how much i suck at building this fucking kiln i fell back on something easier, so i made a few throwing ribs for future pottery throwing. I just need to polish them now once the linseed oil dries up, and drill a few holes to make holding them easier.

Dome reinforcement. Maybe it will have the intended purpose, maybe not.

Kiln first setback:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Failure is an integral part of the scientific process so i gotta accept that^^
I learned something with this failure: wait for the clay to dry COMPLETELY before firing it. Once again i am too impatient and it is causing setbacks (very much not the first time, won't be the last either i guess)
Waiting is torture for me and even if i was working on the wood lathe at the same time i just thought hey im gonna test fire the kiln without the chimney to to strengthen the structure... well that got me nowhere. Luckily the structure is still sound. The clay is there to insulate the beach pebble and mortar around it so it's ok really.
So yeah. I fucked up. But I'm learning:)
Tumblr media
Since the kiln will be loaded from the top and not from an access door on the side i have to make the top chimney in one piece, so this time i mixed my clay with a bit of sand and some hay to make a fibrous mortar akin to brick on top of a foam mould that i will either be able to remove or that i will burn away to reveal the dome.
It looks like a massive cow shit.
Now i will leave both the kiln and the dome to dry for a few days and focus on other projects - namely the forge, finishing the bronze furnace, the wood lathe and once that's done i can start with smaller tools for all my other projects.
I may also make a removable roof for the "heat" area, to protect it from rain when I'm not using it

Kiln step 2 :
Tumblr media
Finished basically the red parts:
Tumblr media
(Karkanas et al. 2019. Microstratigraphic and mineralogical study of a Late Bronze Age updraft pottery kiln, Kolonna site, Aegina Island, Greece. Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences.)
The greyish brown is not concrete it's muddy clay mixed with a tiny portion of special chimney cement i had left from years ago. It is not used as structural support so it should be fine:)
The chimney is going to be so annoyiiiing to do:( I'm almost out of bricks so i decided to build the chimneys out of air dried clay mixed with a mush of bamboo fibers (i don't have hay lying around but i do have bamboo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like to be able to have a final elevation of the upper chamber of approx 30cm but i may not reach that. We'll see.
Furnace step 1 :
I also started working on the adjacent bronze furnace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Simpler construction, this is not my first but it is the first one that I'm designing only to function as a melting furnace and not also a forge so it can be square:) These are foundations stacked on top of a simple pit. I don't think i will leave the steel tubing past the first firing cycle .
When the chimneys for both of these will be drying I'll start building the forge which is the simplest of the 3 structures and will require less than 3 h of work.

Plans for two coil tattoo machines:
I have studied how coil machines work from the one i bought and it's very simple tech actually so as part of my tattoo project I'm going to build the two machines I'm gonna use.
Tumblr media
What will become my main liner, the frame is shaped like reindeer antlers as a reference to what i will study as a bone industry archeologist in prehistory:)
I call it the "magda liner" - for the magdalenian period.
Steel, plastic, copper wire, brass, and idk what the grip will be made of yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second one, either another liner or a shader idk yet i will modify the armature bar and the spring consequently:)
For now it is nicknamed the future liner but i will find a better name in time.
This one is inspired by space age tech, i recently visited the air and space museum in paris and they had a metallurgical furnace from one of the space station experiments and i looooved the aesthetic with both visible wires and stuff AND futuristic look. Also what they used as an inspiration for most of the tech in the game PREY (2017) which i also love. It's all esthetics the functional principles are of basic coil tattoo machines but i want to make them my own:)
This one will be steel, brass or bronze, copper, some plastic, and copper wire.

All done!:) i passed my gf's birthday but i will give it a bit late, it's no biggie.
Now I'm gonna wrap it up and it give it to her brother so he can sneak it in her room as a surprise. I hope it will lift her spirit, she's been very down lately.

Trying new stuff with inked incisions. Not really conclusive yet. But it was fun to do.
I do a lot of tattooing at the moment because it is fast and easy and i get good results and it makes me feel great about both my skills and my body:)

Cauldron symbols tattoos! :)
I wanted to work on small details and experiment with tattooing with my left hand and I'm happy with the result:)
I have wanted the cauldron symbols for a long time and i had no idea where to put them, honestly I'm super stoked with the result:)
