tmg song asks! :)
Spent Gladiator 2, Dance Music, and Done Bleeding
Spent Gladiator 2 – I haven't sat down with this song until now, so I'm happy your ask is helping me expand my discography knowledge. I really like the determined, gritty optimism of this song. The juxtaposition of both these images in this verse feels compelling to me
Like the mice in the forgotten grain
Way up on the top shelf
Like someone who's found a small town to escape to
Keeps one eye on his abandoned, former self
Dance Music – using music as a comfort/escape -- big mood, JD, big mood
Lean in close to my little record player on the floor
So this is what the volume knob's for
Done Bleeding – I haven't listened to this one extensively either. (In general i gravitate less towards In League with Dragons compared to JD's other albums. And i tend to just make big playlists of songs i like, so it means my overall album knowledge can be spotty. Been trying to spend time with individual albums per friend recommendations.) After listening it definitely fits in the genre of "songs about sitting alone in a room waiting for something to happen" -- and then eventually finding the exit. This verse struck me in particular
Take a picture or two
Just to remember the view
Leave a mark on the door
As an empty warning sign from one who's gone before
But isn't here anymore
Something something every place i've ever lived is full of ghosts / moving beyond selves or places you outgrow / imperfection of memory.

I don't actually know tmg that well so i only know a few songs but how 'bout that Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton?
This whole song is great to belt in the car while driving, but the gut punch part of the song for me has to be
When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you

ough…
(inspired by this post by @piratecaptainscaptainpirates)
[ID: A digital drawing made to look like a selfie of Ed and Stede at pride. Stede’s smiling in a smoldery way, wearing rainbow aviator sunglasses and an unbuttoned teal shirt with rainbow stripes. Ed is smiling widely, eyes crinkled, wearing a purple tshirt and a trans flag tied around his shoulders like a cape. Ed has on rainbow eyeliner, small pink, blue, and purple heart stickers on his right cheek, and a trans flag in facepaint on his left cheek. Stede has a matching trans flag on his right cheek. Behind them is a blurred background of buildings, blue sky, and various rainbow flag decorations. There’s an overlay on the image to give it a rainbow light leak effect at the left and right edges.]

TMG song asks: up the wolves, steal smoked fish, ultimate jedi who wastes all the other jedi and eats their bones, and heretic pride <3
Up The Wolves – this was one of the songs i listened to a lot when i first got into TMG during (guess what) a time when i was Going Through It. Different parts of the song have all slammed me with the steel chair depending on the context, but the lines that hit these days are
There's gonna come a day when you feel better
You'll rise up free and easy on that day
And float from branch to branch
Lighter than the air
it feels adjacent to "this too shall pass" in a holding out for ease kind of way
Steal Smoked Fish - i see you friendo with this specific song ask because we've talked about it with respect to grief and working in health professions. the lyric that's just seared into my brain is
I see your destinies above you
Like angels who don't love you
The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All the Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones – i've only heard this one a handful of times because it's not on the platform i use to make playlists but the absurdism gets me every time. In particular, this line –
Specifically just their bones, all the soft parts you can keep
It’s the bones that have the calcium, so he says
Heretic Pride – this one gives me great big trans feelings and while it'd be easy to pick "i feel so proud to be alive," this line packs so much into it
Transfiguration's gonna come for me at last
And I will burn hotter than the sun
send me a Mountain Goats song title and I'll tell you my favorite line(s)
