On Two Wheels in the 1960s by Greater Manchester Police
Via Flickr:
A Lancashire Constabulary motorcyclist stands proudly beside his Triumph machine in the rear yard of Ashton-under-Lyne Police Station in 1963. Policing began in the town in 1848 with the formation of Ashton-under-Lyne Borough Police. The area became part of Lancashire Constabulary in 1948 and finally, with the addition of Hyde and Stalybridge, became the Tameside (G) Division of Greater Manchester Police in 1974. The building photographed was demolished and replaced with the current building – which serves as the division’s headquarters – in 2004. The motorcycle appears to be a Triumph Speed Twin but we would be grateful for any further information about the model as many Triumph motorcycles saw police service in the period.
