One of my neighbors has two freaky dogs. Creepy, uncanny dogs. Two dogs which move like a single entity in two bodies. Anzu is freaked out by them. Their owner looks beleaguered by them. Whenever I see them she has the exhausted affect of an overworked domestic servant. It looks like she is in charge of two elven princes who have been cursed to take canine form. They often look as if they’re planning to eat smaller dogs, but never bark, even while standing up on their hind legs or stalking other dogs down the sidewalk, which of course makes them creepier.

I was extremely confident in my breed ID on these dogs but tonight they came close enough without Anzu barking at THEM, I was like, for due diligence and my own satisfaction I will ask. “Are they basenjis?”

The owner, being dragged in opposite directions on two leashes like the victim of a terrible Roman torture, gasped “yes” with the faintest of breaths. And then her dogs carried her away

Ngl every single year when things start warming up I see things about “how to recognize heat exhaustion vs heat stroke” & as someone who’s suffered heat stroke so severe I was unresponsive in the hospital for 5 hours NONE of the allegedly informative charts and posters and posts ever accurately describe what it was like at all and as someone who has experienced more minor heat exhaustion I can say pretty confidently that a lot of the symptoms overlap an incredible deal. Like the sensation of “cool, clammy skin” was actually one of the last things I remember feeling before falling unconscious LOL yet I always see it on the “heat exhaustion” list as a distinct symptom separate from heat stroke. It’s such dangerous misinformation to act like the body’s negative reaction to heat is so extremely distinct in these circumstances that you’ll be able to consistently parse exactly what’s going on when you’re at your worst… Just use whatever resources and follow whatever guides you can to stay hydrated in whatever environment you’re in and know what general “extreme negative reaction to heat” symptoms tend to look like so you know when to go to a doctor if needed.

hey holy shit. the sound I made when I read this. this is exactly why the chicken fettucine recall is so scary, it is such a huge comfort food and a bunch of folks eat it while pregnant. I am so fucking glad my post found you and that you got medical attention right away.

yours is an example of doing exactly the right thing: listeria is especially dangerous while pregnant, and there are antibiotics that can be prescribed for high-risk folks during the early stages of symptoms or even before symptoms begin. and while listeria can take up to 80 days to cause illness, it can also cause issues within hours or days of eating contaminated food.

for you and for everyone else trying to avoid the general news right now, here is a list to help keep up with recalls and foodborne illness outbreaks in the united states since I do not post all of them:

FDA recall list (food, drug, medical device, etc recalls with press announcements, usually bigger food recalls have announcements)

FDA enforcement reports (more recalls go here, but more difficult to navigate than the recall list with announcements)

USDA FSIS recall list (they cover different food than FDA, especially meat. the chicken fettucine alfredo recall was posted here)

NHTSA recall list (vehicles, car seats, tires, and equipment recalls!)

CPSC recall and safety warning list (products! there have been a LOT of recalls of baby stuff recently!)

FDA outbreak investigations (you can see the status of outbreaks as they happen and get investigated, this is often where recalls start)

CDC active investigations of foodborne illness outbreaks (outbreaks can have both an FDA page and a CDC page. they cover different information)

foodsafetynews (news about food safety ONLY! not a government source. mostly focused on the US and canada, but also news around the world. some of what they post involves commentary on the current administration, BUT they post about bigger and more relevant recalls that wind up in the ever-tricky FDA enforcement reports.)
