Rodger DW rant :3

RAHH I love Rodger!!! but i feel like i see some mischaracterization in the DW fandom— so here are some observations and a little yapping about him!

MY ISSUE: The main thing I see in fandom when Rodger is depicted is him as this totally straight-laced[certainly not straight] and tired father type.. and though this has truth in it, I feel like we are skimming over the fact that rodger is such a Silly Guy™— Though of course this isn't to say there haven't been this depiction in fandom either. I've just seen a lot of the former.

MY EVIDENCE!! Looking at many of his interactions, he just wants to investigate, usually doesn't realize that he may be overstepping[the few interactions not about research are with his implied kid figure, Toodles, and with Glisten— whatever those guys have going on, affectionately. Also Eggson, but those regard the aforementioned two]. BUT anyhow, when he does overstep, he apologizes[see the interactions with Vee and Connie]. He's also enthusiastic! He's not just researching because it's his job or something, but it makes him happy and excited, as most clearly shown in his interaction with Scraps.

I think he gets a little mischaracterized as completely straight faced or just a tired dad, which i'd assume comes from his dynamic with glisten and also partially because of the costume with him and toodles. When he is often paired with very high energy characters, mainly Glisten and Toodles, it's easy for the fandom to fall into this trope-y view of him, made to counter the other two— making him the tired and usually unhappy character we see in fan depictions. I think this is also because he can be aloof, which people may misinterpret as him just not caring? which as mentioned about with Vee and Connie, as well as with other interactions, such as with Boxten, he is quite kind. Also, it makes sense the fandoms interpretation of him is very much about the dynamic between him and other characters[usually Glisten] because this is a very shipping-heavy fandom, and he certainly isn't the only character who ends up getting pigeonholed into certain tropes because of it.

Point is, though I love tired father Rodger, and exasperated with Glisten Rodger, I would LOVE to see more of him just being enthusiastic! just happy about doing research, or being kind to other toons. or being oblivious, but not necessarily bashful about things. He's a silly guy,,

Just an end note again, you can do whatever you want! these were just my thoughts on him, but I see the appeal in many of these depictions. They aren't "wrong," I just wish I'd see more of stuff that isn't tired dad rodger.

hey. y’all notice how many other toons don’t seem to like rodger/his investigations.

i could be wrong and also some of these i picked out don’t have to with this specifically, but i get the feeling it might be because he’s like. acknowledging and digging into What Went Wrong, the shutdown and dandy’s operation, and trying to get them to as well. and i get the feeling a lot of the toons are still in the denial stage of grief.

They have been an educator on transneutral nonbinary identity, non-binary transition, the anti binarist position and intersex issues for decades. This is an interview with them from the 1980s, talking about their experience as a non-binary/genderqueer person at a time where the community was just coming together.
