im not emotional you’re emotional 🥺
Recently @not-euclidean and I had a conversation about the people we’ve been researching, for them it was Oskar Omdal and for me it was Edward Israel. We decided if they’d met they would make good company for each other in a waiting room… then I remembered I could draw this. So I did!

Gustav Wiik, the youngest member of Amundsen’s original Gjøa crew, was born on Christmas day 1878. And every Christmas, he would complain about getting old.
“Today is Christmas Day and my 25th birthday, or a quarter of a hundred years.”

I can happily confirm I took these images directly from Sverdrup’s scientific reports on the expedition! The photographs were taken using two cameras provided by astrophysicist Carl Størmer - who incidentally is better known for his hidden camera photography on the streets of Oslo c. 1893-97

Polar comic of the day :)
From the diary of Thomas Orde-Lees, June 23rd 1916: “Last night's concert was voted a great success. […] I wish I had space at my disposal to quote not only the whole program but also the individual "turns" in full. Hussey obliged with his inimitable recitations with a very good humoured sally at me. Macklin recited some carefully written verse referring in scathing terms to my unfortunate nut-food sugar bargain. Even his best friends and my worst ones voted it in bad taste and quite out of place on this auspicious occasion [...]"
….but here’s what REALLY went down (apparently this was a thing in camp rock but I have not seen that. so you get the mid 2000s british playground taunt version)
