rewatching ds9 again, I’m and having Thoughts about Bajoran physiology. They’re basically “human unless noted,” but the “unless noted” does some heavy lifting in “Body Parts” (and the entire Kira pregnancy storyline), and I’m trying to figure out how a species could have possibly evolved like this. Do they… not have placentas? Because Julian’s comments about vascularization seem to imply that there’s no actual separation between maternal and fetal blood. I guess Bajorans evolved an entirely different system for live birth?? How the hell? And it allows them to carry unrelated children of completely different species with no apparent issues? Bashir even says that he had to give Kira a shot of some made-up drug so the baby could metabolize Bajoran nutrients, which?????? Can humans not metabolize Bajoran nutrients normally? How is everyone on this station eating the same food at the same restaurants? If I had a jumja stick, would it even provide me any calories, or does it have L-glucose or something that my body couldn’t even process?
