Sith Inquisitor class story in the nutshell

"Oh?" The Sith tilts his dragon's horn-helmeted head, voice vocoded and sharp through the muzzle of his mask. Only the eerie, glowing crimson of Chiss eyes through the open visor give way to the being behind the armor. "I'm flattered."

Nox surveys the other Sith with all the interest and caution warranted another Dark Lord. His mind hums with the whispers of his spectral occupants, a chorus of conflicting suggestions and commands he's (mostly) learned to drown out over the years. Other times, Nox's skull feels as if yearning to split open, the impressions of the Sith spirits' moods and thoughts blended amongst his own, blurring together like blood down a drain. A constant, latent commentary running through and over his own thoughts, driving him to odd silences or muttered self-dialogues that drive others far from him.

The Empire’s citizens avoid their Sith overlords as much as they can. No one wants to be around one that talks to himself.

As for other Sith...well, Nox has earned himself a reputation for treachery since his days on Korriban. He has no shortage of enemies. Whether she is one of them remains to be seen.

"That so?" he asks, crossing his arms. The tilt of his head, the slight crooked smile playing at his lips, is the only indication he's nowhere near as stern as his demeanor seems to imply. "And why's that?"

Anakin bit the inside of his cheek.

It wasn't Ahsoka's responsibility to reassure him. She was his Padawan-- it's his responsibility to assure and guide her. But he's also set a bad precedent of...not quite venting to her, but letting his emotions and thoughts that ensue slip into their conversations with ease. He'd never expected their partnership to mirror his and Obi-Wan's; Anakin would never achieve the cool, collected Jedi reserve his Master embodies so flawlessly. But he's tried to be as good of a teacher as he can for her.

He'd certainly let his feelings be known as they'd tracked down Hardeen (or, who they thought was Hardeen). An abuse of shore leave, dereliction of duty, setting a bad example for his Padawan-- call it what you will, he'd taken advantage of the time away from the frontlines in the wake of Obi-Wan's 'death' that the Council had granted him in order to seek vengeance. And had taken Ahsoka along for the ride.

He isn't exactly sorry about it. Without her, he might have met his end under the sights of Cad Bane's LL-30...or compromised Obi-Wan's mission. A mission he'd been left in the dark on. But the thought (unprompted, conjured up by his own wayward thoughts and the lingering stain of Obi-Wan's lie) that Ahsoka might be having misgivings about him in the aftermath of his quest of revenge justice, gnaws at his conscience.

Anakin manages to exhale something of a laugh, a hand roughly running through the hair at the back of his head. "Well...good. At least someone doesn't," he mutters, a joke that doesn't quite land even to his own ears. Anakin fiddles with the hydrospanner in his hand, quiet a few moments before landing on sincerity. "...Thanks, Snips."

It had taken great effort to locate the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker.

He smothers his presence in the Force with a heavy hand. His best disguise, though the hood of his cloak and swath of cloth covering half his face suit him well enough to mask his identity to any passerby not attuned to the Force. The years have given way to a full decade since the end of the Clone Wars, the heroic image of the Hero With No Fear long laid to rest from public adoration (or disdain), but he's in no position to lean on history's cleansing hands to spare him recognition. Not now. Not with what's at stake.

Vader breathes deeply, savoring the unfiltered air and the array of scents from the bustling market despite the sting and ache it brings. The years, unable to assure Anakin Skywalker had been forgotten within the annals of history, had failed to fully heal his damaged lungs and throat from the betrayal he'd suffered on Mustafar. While the burns that had marred his right side as he'd pulled himself from the planet's molten banks had long since turned to a latticework of contracture and hypertrophic scarring, the damage of Mustafar's toxic atmosphere, the heat radiating from the lava flows that had threatened to consume him, had nearly rendered his lungs nonfunctional. Thermal, chemical, and inhalation damage had choked him, leaving him dependent on the use of a respirator mask for years as he painstakingly sought to heal himself. Ingestible bacta solutions, meditation chambers, the Force itself-- all had played a part to bring him here today, able to breathe freely without the respirator's aid. To sleep without the intrusion of its forced inhale-exhale. To speak above a whisper....

The helmet of his armor, the muzzle of his respirator, the very image that so often appeared as the final omen before death befell the Empire's enemies, lies tucked away aboard an old freighter ship he'd bought off some spaceport trader several systems back. Only his lightsaber remains, clipped to his belt beneath the traveler's cloak he'd donned in place of beskar and durasteel. The image of the Empire's reaper will not serve him here.

Not even the Emperor himself can know he's here.

Vader follows the ghost of another life through the market, deftly shouldering around its rabble, hanging back just far enough to toy with the risk of losing sight of her. She will not remain unaware of him for long. He'd be surprised (and perhaps disappointed) if she hasn't already sensed that something, somewhere has set its sights on her. The Force, survivor's instinct-- call it what you will, she would not still be alive if she was poorly suited to either.

He'll rely on that for his purposes here. She will rely on that as well, if her continued survival is of any importance to her.
