Headcanon

Jack’s unique fighting style is what it is because of how he learned it —— that is watching what the people mugging his young teenager self did before he lost consciousness and finding out by accident that if you use a fucking magic trick in a fight it throws the other guy pretty far off his game.

He tended to get pretty brutal with it, until one use of this self-taught skill, which ended up being Jack vs a small group of wannabe thugs, he fought back a little to hard and actually killed one of his assailants. Said assailant was at least a year or two younger than Jack himself, and from then on, he swore to himself he’d only ever fight anyone enough to get away.

No one, not even the other Horsemen know about this. Merritt tried to get it from him all of one time, and Jack’s reaction to it was so violent and visceral he stopped and never tried again.
