Is the brotherhood broken?

Leafs goalie won the Cup with the Panthers as backup last year without starting a playoff game. But team guy, everyone loved him, etc. Incredible story finally getting first chance as starter in Toronto at 31 by accident when the planned starter was injured to start season, and Stolarz played best in league to demand starting job. Been great in playoffs so far.

First game against his boys from last season, Panthers are losing 4-1. Sam Bennett elbows Stolarz in head. Concussion spotter says nothing. A few minutes later he throws up and they pull him. Ends up in ambulance. Turns out probably had first concussion 5 min into game. Also silence from spotter on that one.

Bennett has now caused serious concussions for important players in tight series 3 years in a row (plus a host of others over the years.) This is a playoff “skill” for which he is highly praised. It’s his value add that put him on Team Canada’s roster. It’s why he is largely considered the Maple Leafs’ top free agent target to acquire this summer.

Perhaps because he has now likely ended the playoff hopes of the center of the hockey universe who had good goaltending for the first time in 20 years, there will be consequences. But probably not. He probably points to the first incident where Stolarz was hit by a puck and says he’s not to blame. And gets hired next year by the Leafs. After all, it’s celebrated that Bennett currently plays on a line with the last guy he concussed in the playoffs. Marchand, also a historically dirty player, had no choice but to joke about how trying to seriously injure the other side is a respected part of the game.

The Cup is some magical holy grail. The famous line is win it and you walk together as brothers forever. It’s also lore that to deserve the Cup, you should be willing to kill for it. A current ESPN commercial is about how everyone in the league has dreamed of winning it since they were little and dedicated their lives to it. That’s not enough. You have to be willing to “give everything.” But the lore is hard to square when it requires you to celebrate that someone is willing to kill their “brother” to win it again. Where do we go from here?
