What I love about the Thirteenth Doctor’s era is that it’s about the power ordinary people can wield by trying to do the right thing.
It’s literally in the title of the closing episode for the Thirteenth Doctor; the “power” of the Doctor is their friends. Normal people doing their best to try to make the world a better place. No prophecies, no “saviour”; just a bunch of people doing the best they can. And, honestly, that’s pretty inspiring, to say the least.

13 never actually tells the fam who she is or her name, like, she never gets a ‘i’m the doctor’ moment with them, it happens off screen. And I could never quite lock down why I thought this happened? I saw some theories but nothing that really sold me on it. But like, the entire point in the end turns out that they all know exactly who she is without her ever having to tell them. Getting information out of her is like getting blood from a stone. What they know they worked out themselves. She never declares herself to them, and so, we never see her name herself. Her name IS a declaration.
We do not see her ever tell them who she is, because she shows them. The point is Yaz knows without being told. So 13 never opens up about who she is, she never breathes a word about her world or her past beyond a few cornered words, or her newfound knowledge to anyone. But they knew her anyway, because she’s a whole complete person as she is.
Honestly, I am Very glad Chibnall opened up and spoke about his adoption in an interview and how it spurred this story, because it was the final puzzle piece to this story for me. It’s an adoption story. It’s ‘i have a right to know my past and where I come from’. It’s ‘I have a right to look for this information and it should not be kept from me’. It’s also at the same time ‘I am and have always been, all the while while not knowing these things, a whole complete person’.
It’s a declaration of personhood Without knowing your own past while also saying that being able to learn about said past is an unassailable right.
In the end, it doesn’t actually matter what’s in that watch. It was 13′s past and her past to own only. Tecteun had no right to steal it like she stole the child. The doctor has the right to open it if they ever wish to, and That is the agency they needed. But she’s a whole person regardless.

I think it says a lot about me that David Tennant officially being 10 and 14 annoys me in ways the Timeless Child never did

It DESTROYS ME that season 10 of doctor who is so overlooked as it is –  i feel like its the season where we can see the writing grow, its the season of BILL MOTHERFUCKING POTTS, the funkiest and loveliest lesbian in the universe, the season of the 12th Doctor in his most grandpa, his most compassionate and hopeful, the season of ‘‘without hope without witness without reward’‘, the season that marks Missy’s depth as it never was before, the season where we get gems - absolute gems like Oxygen (what a terrifying episode, good god) and The Pyramid at the end of the world/The Lie of The land (is it goofy at times? yes! is it the time where Bill’s imaginative nature and conviction saves the day? Also yes! Do I wish we knew more about Bill’s mom before those episodes? Also yes!!!!). S10 gave us the context of a domestic Doctor, a doctor after losing his wife, a doctor who stayed in the same place for one Darillium night – twenty four years with his beloved.
And the sendoff, the sendoff, the peak of Missy’s arc, the Doctor at his lowest, having failed Bill, begging his oldest friend to stand with him, just this once. Bill Potts and the trauma of being abandoned for years – the tragedy that her friends tried, but their seconds was days for her. The tragedy of becoming a cyberman and the absolute deus ex machina that I will never complain about – her puddle lesbian lost love coming back, extending her immortality. Bury your gays, who?????
Season 10 is a delight and I really reccomend you give it a chance – 12s run in and on itself is a delight. It has its misses but it’s so so heartfelt. It is, after all, a tired and run down and cynical Doctor relearning why he loves humanity, becoming his most human, learning to stay still and enjoy it.

when i first watched s8 of doctor who when i was younger, i loved it but never liked the clara/danny/doctor dynamic going on. it just felt like i love triangle, which i'd never enjoyed before, and i couldn't see the point of it. but now i actually like it a lot more because i know it has very little to do with what is happening at the surface level, and actually serves more important thematic functions that make it super interesting.
the doctor and danny in s8 have to be in conflict because they are representative of clara's two lives -- normal work/home/earth vs adrenaline-high space adventures -- and how she is torn between them. these two different lives are constantly tugging at her throughout s8, as we all know. they are her main conflict in this series, perhaps even clara's main conflict across her entire run. of course the main symbols of those opposing lives, the doctor and danny, need to be constantly at odds, to demonstrate clara's inner struggles.
(there is also of course a surface level aspect to all this, which is that the doctor and danny both consider clara the most important person in their lives, and are jealous of the connection that the other has to her. but i'm guessing we all know that already.)
the doctor and danny are also supposed to be constant reflections of one another because they both look at the other and see their negative experiences with war. the doctor and danny were both soldiers, and although danny seems more accepting of that part of himself and has a more positive view on the military's function, both of them chose to leave that behind, and both still have the lingering trauma that a war experience causes. danny looks at the doctor and just sees the cruellest figures in the military. he is worried that clara will have something horrific happen to her on her adventures just like danny had in the military. the doctor looks at danny and sees who he was in the time war, the person who he hated being, and is probably worried that if clara can like a military figure like danny, then maybe she likes the doctor because she sees him in the same way.
this obviously isn't perfectly executed all the time, and it's kind of annoying that the doctor and danny only look at and evaluate one another with the worst outlook from beginning to end without ever seeing the good sides of one another that clara sees. however, i still think the dynamic does really interesting things with the doctor and clara and danny. s8 of doctor who is character-fuelled in an extreme way, so that practically every aspect of the plot is a result of the main characters (doctor, clara, danny, missy) and their actions, or a tool to help explore the characters' developments and conflicts better. and i love all of that now and understand it much better than i ever did when i first watched the show.
