PSA regarding tumblrâs latest Censorship Nightmare
For those of you who havenât seen this announcement, tumblr recently made some changes to the iOS version of the app, purportedly to comply with Appleâs content guidelines. These changes took effect on Dec 21, starting in version 22.5.1 of the iOS app. As some of you may recall, Appleâs strict guidelines were the driving force for the infamous Great Purge of 2018, which coincidentally also happened around this time of year, but it seems banning all of the female-presenting nipples wasnât good enough for Apple.
Below is a summary of the important changes. Note that these changes technically ONLY affect those using the iOS app. If youâre accessing tumblr through a different app or operating system (Google Chrome, Android app, etc) it wonât affect you directly but it will affect your followers who use iOS so you should definitely be aware of it.
The list of banned tags has been expanded. As before, thereâs no way to know which words or phrases have been banned until you try searching for them, in which case youâll either get no search results or the following message: âThis content has been hidden because of potentially suggestive or explicit content.â You may think this doesnât concern you if you donât post explicit material, but do not make the mistake of expecting the banned tags to be logical or reasonable. Iâve already encountered multiple completely innocuous posts (random fandom gifsets) that seem to be hidden on iOS for no discernible reason.
Blogs that have been flagged as explicit can no longer be viewed. Previously, flagged blogs just had their posts hidden from searches, but if you knew the username you could still visit it after clicking through a warning about sensitive content. Now you canât access it at all.
Likes and reblogs from blogs that have been flagged will no longer show up in your notes. This one wonât affect most peopleâs user experience as much as the others, but it does mean you may be missing notes. Itâs unclear if likes and reblogs from flagged blogs will still count towards the overall note total (and only be missing from the activity feed and note viewer) but I suspect thatâs the case.
THE BIG ONE: ANY POST TAGGED WITH A BANNED TAG WILL NO LONGER SHOW UP ON YOUR DASHBOARD. Previously, if you tagged a post with a banned word or phrase (even if the words were used inside another tag), that post would not show up in searches, but your followers would still be able to see it on their dashboard. Now those posts are hidden from your own followers as well. This includes both original posts and reblogs. And if that wasnât bad enough, hereâs the real kicker: even if you donât tag something with one of the banned words, if the OP used a banned tag, any reblogs of that post will not show up on anyoneâs dashboard (on the iOS app). The only saving grace here, and I hate to even call it that, is that the blocked posts are still visible if you visit a blog directly or if you have post notifications turned on.
As usual, tumblr was extremely unclear and evasive about all of this in their official announcement. Not surprising, of course, since if more people were aware of these new draconian tactics I canât imagine there wouldnât be more of an uproar about it. Tumblr claims that these changes are somewhat temporary and that they are currently working on something that will allow for a less restricted iOS experience, but they refuse to say what that something is and when it will be implemented. And letâs just say, considering their track record, Iâm not hopeful.
All of this is horrible and infuriating for many reasons, but the worst part is how insanely counterproductive it is to creating the âsafeâ environment tumblr (or more specifically Apple) supposedly wants.
Tags have always been used for both blog organization and filtering purposes. Tagging posts with triggers and content warnings is a common practice that gives users the ability to filter out content they may find upsetting or just donât donât want to see for whatever reason. By choosing to ban a bunch of unlisted âsensitive contentâ tags, all theyâre doing is encouraging people who want to share that kind of content to come up with alternative less well-known tags or simply not tag that content at all anymore if they want it to show up on their followerâs dashboards, thereby making it more likely for someone to encounter it when they didnât want to.
So really, with all of the alleged concern for safety and âprotecting the children,â all theyâve done is make tumblr less safe for everyone. Typical.

thirdchanceâ:
RE:CORE was like something from a dream â packed wall to wall with crates and stalls boasting all manner of vinyl discs, cassettes, and VHS tapes the likes of which Ayanami had never seen. Admittedly, she hadnât taken this mission for entirely honest reasons, and standing in the entrance of the shop she felt a pang of guilt having travelled so far with little intention to see it through.
The shop itself was brimming with Ofiuclones â mechanisms that already raised the hairs on the back of her neck in discomfort. Her visit would have to be short â she would peek at a stall or two, and then leave while there was still time in the day to make herself useful.
Between the swarm of aphid-like clones and the non-apocalyptic culture shock RE:CORE was currently dealing her, Ayanami had hardly noticed the non-NPCs sprinkled in among the commercial chaos.
The voice behind her drew her attention away from the frenzy, and she turned her head to regard the stranger.
He looked like military, although for all Ayanamiâs exposure to armed forces she could only place his accent, not his uniform.
âI thought video games were lost after Second Impact wiped half of the consumer population off the face of the Earth.â She replied flatly, without a trace of humor.
So much for that lifeline! The Medic had assumed himself clever in asking a member of the youth, having seen more than enough children running about with their Gamebro and Swatch consoles in his city-bound captivity.
A moment passes in which his expression is one of raised brows and a sort of bemusement more suited to a man finding a frog in his houseplants, rather than one faced with either grim portents of a future yet to pass or the confused musings of a feverish girl. Over-large hands land on his hips with a bounce of boot heels, all the while not taking his gaze from the intriguing stranger.
â⊠und what year does that happen?â Itâs impossible to mask the amusement in his tone, try as he might not to chuckle in the face of predicted death, âHoo! Iâm sorry, but I didnât even begin to consider that you might also be ein foreigner! I always forget about all this ah, the timey-schmimey business that happens here!â
âThe last I recall hearing of video games was that they were coming out with little Pong machines for homes, a few of mein colleagues were excited about getting one.â A glance was thrown over her shoulder, frowning at a distant cloneâs sudden interest in holding eye contact, âBut this is besides the point. I need to find something called âBambiâ und you mentioned that these things were lost for you, should I presume youâve at least seen one in your life?â
#sdkjhf she's totally fine! i apologize for wordy grandpa#and his tendency to mess up any lore he comes in contact with#thirdchance

VINE SENTENCE STARTERS || this is, like, a 4 month old ask so uh
@gildedusurper said: â road work ahead? uh yeah i sure hope it does â
They nearly go veering out of the bike lane from the force of his sudden laughter, but thankfully the old saying rings true in that the Medic still has as much control over their shared mountain bike as he did in his youth. The absolute tragedy that would have been scuffed armor and spilled takeout would have surely been too much for either man to handle, otherwise!
The wind nearly steals his glasses as he glances back at his seated passenger, not to check that heâs still there (the arms around his waist tell him that much) but to make sure the same doesnât steal his words.
âItâs a warning, mein mittelalterliche MausbĂ€r, not a promise!â On cue, they whiz dangerously past a forest of traffic cones that he seems not to notice, âItâs telling us that road workers will be there!â ⊠and almost into one such worker, though the man jumps aside just in time to save them the hassle of hitting a speed bump. âWe need to get you on the road more often, road safety is ein important skill to learn!â

NEW CONTRACT AVAILABLE: Bambi-oozled
It should have been such an easy task. The Medic was a frequent RE:CORE customer, still being very much in love with the music of his time, he should have been able to find the errant video game in an instant. Or, at least, heâd thought he would. Aside from the issue of several Ofiuclones clogging the isles and vying for the shelves upon shelves of browsing space, he didnât actually know what he was looking for.
Video games werenât a subject heâd paid any mind to since his arrival in the city and the concept was still in its infancy in the 1970s, he knew what an arcade cabinet looked like but a⊠what had the girl called it... a P.S⊠2?
Asking for help was his only option and- no! He was not about to ask the bastard working the counter! He still wanted to shop there with his dignity in-tact once the quest was finished, thank you very much! Harassing a fellow customer was his only choice.
âExcuse me!â He spoke in hushed tones, lest any Ofiuclones hear him. âI apologize for the bother, but could you help me with something? Itâs a little embarrassing, but Iâve been sent here to find ein video game und Iâm afraid I donât⊠really know what those look like these days.â

gildedusurperâ:
The barest hint of cordial tones is all that he needs to feel an all too familiar fluttering in his core. Words soaked and filtered through his grand ego only to settle; nestled closely towards hidden insecurity. The lovingness felt, tender, roaring akin to an unkempt fire, blossomed further and further still as he could salvage nothing more from his shock beyond that of childish giggles. â âFunny little manâ, am I? â A pause for reprieve. Basking in the warmth brought forth from their current conversation. Then comes a heavy swallow, heavily cooed words following suit. â If Iâm to hold to my honesty⊠I liked you then too. More so when you accepted my first of several invitations. Itâs⊠Itâs been quite an age since something of that sort happened. You claim I cured your horrid evening, but my heart, you saved me from years of absolute emptiness. âÂ
Then, and only then, had he found himself coming to an abrupt halt. The echoes of an annoyed man left far behind fade into nothing, leaving only the slightest ringing of static noise residing from the hanging line and his own steady breathing to be all his ears are greeted with amidst the stillness of the dead night. â Nothing I could ever do or gift to you will ever suffice - repay you, I should say. â His vision falters into a careless haze. Blurry, unfocused, fixated only upon fuzzy white dots pouring endlessly from the skies above.
Tense muscles ease which much thanks to the soothness Ludwig had caused unintentionally - and itâs then that his mind trails. Soothing. The world had been all but a chaotic storm; crashing waves hitting heavily upon sea shores, shredding into the softened portions of land and further carving its way deeper into hardened stones. The sea, so to speak, had stolen many things. Hiding alluring secrets and both forgotten and unforgettable treasures of which heâd yearned endlessly for over the passing years. There was no safety in treading through that tormenting sea. Not yet - not until now - where safety and stability had been found. Built.Â
He knew then what love was. It wasnât those giddy uproars or throbbing desires, nor the treasuring of bodies and beings and personalities. It was the safety. That comfort. A boat built upon several foundations solidified throughout the year, granting passage through a cruel and unforgiving ocean. Safety never guaranteed; the threat of a crash, sinking, drowning, it was always there. As it always would and always will be. Love was trusting - that even through the harshest winds and most vigorous waves pressuring those foundations - a hand would always be there. A boat would continue its course, keeping him afloat.Â
   He felt safe.Â
   He felt comforted.Â
   Understood.Â
   Heard.
Hypnotic steps continue their route down familiar roads and familiar streets, towards a familiar place he safely called âhomeâ. Not thinking on anything further than his unusual, sporadic analysis. Not until âCotesâ is recognized. A jolt, then a pivot, quick to turn in another direction - enroute towards the nearest transport memorized.Â
â Such a teaseâŠÂ â
â âŠAlas, it will take me some time to meet you there, Lulu~! But I know you love waiting for me, donât you? Iâd be just as excited if my own self were on his merry way to greet me. â
âThe funniest.â Words spoken through light laughter match an even airier mood, expression uncharacteristically tender in those moments before the soft click of a door closing drifts through the receiver. A chill gust encourages those very same chuckles to abruptly end in a shiver in what, audibly, could have been considered a comical hooâing cacophony, âHa... I forget all the time how long youâve been here...â The chill seems to seep further than the level at which skin resides, somehow piercing cool weather wears and melting into his core to culminate in a feeling that couldnât quite be called dread, but perhaps a bedfellow of the very same.
It was common knowledge, to the Medic, that his lover was a resident of several yearsâ tenure within the city. A sinking confliction arose with every reminder that he was permitted to ruminate on, a previous life full of that which was still so very dearly missed at war against what heâd only just begun to build behind stranger walls, every want for the Old laced with guilt in knowing that the New would be abandoned should he receive it. Worse still was the knowledge that he might be forced to leave it behind irregardless of desire.
âWe were both such fools, ja?â There would never be any outward sign of the fear felt each time the knight professed undying loyalty, or none too obvious, nor of the very same he felt in regards to the swelling of warmth felt in his own heart for the other. Dull terror warned him that heâd loved so quickly once before, that the intensity with which heâd been burnt had been a product of his own fierce dedication turning inward. âMein Schatz...â
The potential for words, for catharsis, existed; a practiced profession that the warmth heâd shown in those months was truthfully more akin to roaring flames, something that heâd grown all but certain of being a shared trait between the two, accompanied further by the admittance that his fear of such heat had been changed by days spent with a man whom he felt was properly true.
For it had taken such time to realize that his fears no longer applied only to the potential of personal lossâŠbut also to that potential destruction any void he, himself left behind might cause. The strength of the knightâs love in the face of an uncertain future worried him, bringing to mind the broken man the doctor had been in years past. The unique situation brought on by their captors had forced the younger to lose dear friends, of course, but lovers..?
He wanted desperately to make his worries known... and, at the same time, to bare his heart to one he felt deserved it.
... but such complicated conversations were best put off indefinitely saved for more opportune moments, when nerves were at their best, for heâd been walking in shared silence for some time. Teasing tones and sweetly gifted pet names put a spring back in his step as his own transport entered view.
âYou understand me too well, Auggi!â His accent does horrible things to the syllables, âAnticipation always makes the reward all the sweeter, a surprise works no differently! That said, Iâm already looking forward to seeing you after all those torturous hours I spent without you helping with mein studies. My eyes need more pleasant sights!â
#no proofreading i die by my own words!#''but lexi spiralefes was *last* summer'' shush#i went from angsty to disgustingly cheesy real fast with this one#gildedusurper#spiralefes 2020#it also got too prose-y but that's just me writing past my bedtime
