hope mikaelson is NOT a taurus, a dissertation

aka. here is why hope mikaelson’s birthday is off by a year and several months and why my birth chart alternative is the only option. i’m right

her big three

i’m a huge fan of astrology and i love it when shows get it right. unfortunately, however, some shows get it very very wrong. i learned it was hope’s birthday a couple of days ago, May 2nd making her a …. taurus *record scratch.* so here i present my case for why that is wrong and provide (what i think anyway) is a much better alternative

according to the vampire diaries wiki, her birthday is May 2nd, 2012.

there’s no time information so we don’t know much in the way of houses or her ascendant.

but what we can parse from this alone, is that she’s canonically a: taurus sun, virgo moon, aries mercury, gemini venus, virgo mars, taurus jupiter, libra saturn, aries uranus, pisces neptune, capricorn pluto.

that’s imo too much air and earth from somebody that’s anything but.

i, however, propose the very DIFFERENT option of march 21, 2013 at 9:59pm

why she’s not a taurus

with no house or ascendant information, we���re already working with pretty limited information

notably though, she does have a LOT of earth in the canon chart. with a: taurus sun, virgo moon, virgo mars, and taurus jupiter

all of the plants involving the head and the heart are earth. at the very least, this seems to describe a person that’s pretty grounded, approaches emotional situations with tact and caution (or not at all), very likely has difficulty expressing their emotions, and is likely pretty reserved. ringing any hope mikaelson bells yet?

even if all you know about taurus sun is the stereotypical characteristics, it doesn’t bring the literal descendant of the klaus mikaelson to mind at all. taurus, in particular, is a fixed sign as well as earth, and as such is stubborn, stable, and steady. ruled by venus, they tend to place a lot of importance on beauty, harmony, and their material surroundings. (that is of course, if other elements of their chart don’t contradict this manifestation.)

although hope is certainly stubborn, i interpret it more in the way of the ram (aries) “MY way or the highway”, rather than the bull (taurus) of “i will not move from this spot unless you bring a fucking bulldozer” (pun intended?)

a bit hilariously, with this canon configuration her saturn is in retrograde in libra. which would suggest someone that has intense issues with decision-making, especially if she was born at night. which if you can give hope credit for anything, it’s resolution in her decisions, no matter how right or wrong everyone else thinks it is

of course, the astrological soundness of hope’s canon birthday probably wasn’t high on the priority list when determining it. which is why i have taken matters into my own hands instead!

why she IS an aries

you know what element aries is? fire 🔥

the description i love for them is they are the first sign of the zodiac and fire, and as such they are the first strike of a match, the smoking gun at the beginning of a race.

aries (and scorpio, traditionally) are both ruled by the planet mars, named after the literal god of war.

above everything, before beginning this i knew she had a lot of mars energy. so i kept swinging between putting her sun in aries or scorpio. i eventually settled on aries sun and scorpio rising (which ill go into that specifically in more detail later).

the way it’s often described is that if two signs are ruled by the same planet they express that same energy in different ways. the description i love is aries is the machine gun and scorpio is the sniper rifle.

keywords for aries: confidence, initiative, assertiveness, short-temper. sound more like our girl?

my birth chart for her

the order of which i’ll discuss it is: rising, sun, moon, mercury, venus, mars. of course, you’re free to jump around as you wish

rising - scorpio ♏️

following this, i use the terms rising and ascendant, interchangeably. they mean the same thing. just to be clear that i’m not talking about like the in-universe prison world ascendants lol.

really quickly if you are unfamiliar, i’m going to give a quick breakdown on what a rising sign even is.

arguably the most important placement in a birth chart, it is the sign that was on the literal horizon at the moment of your birth. because of this, it’s very sensitive to time and can change within minutes. it can only be calculated if you have your exact birth time. even a slight change of ascendant from one sign to the next will have drastic consequences on your house placements and can be a contributor to twins that were born only minutes apart having such different personalities (hint hint i will do the twins eventually).

because its the sign constellation rising from the eastern horizon, it’s first impressions, it’s your first instinct, it’s how you are in your day-to-day, how you present yourself to others, its your body.

if nothing else, i stand by this placement of scorpio rising in particular. just reading any simple google search description of a scorpio rising is like a written description of hope herself. but lets just take one from my go-to source regarding sign descriptions, cafeastrology:

Scorpio Ascendant people have a lot of presence. There is something about them that tells the world that they are not to be pushed around. Their manner commands respect, and in some cases, fear. People either love or hate you - you are unlikely to go through life unnoticed. In fact, you might even find it confusing when you realize that you elicit such strong reactions from others. a bit of a sidenote, the 4th house signifies parents, home, living situation. and the 1st house represents the body, character, and appearance. and the planet ruler of her 4th, saturn, is in the 1st house conjunct her ascendant

in layman’s terms (sorta), saturn is exceedingly close to her ascendant. which i certainly interpret as her family legacy (no pun intended) often eclipsing her sense of self in other peoples eyes. the fact that she’s a mikaelson is practically written all over her face. not to mention, that saturn is in retrograde so this suggests she has difficult establishing her own personal identity outside of her family.

sun - aries ♈️

as usual, a quick breakdown. all the planets revolve around the sun, it’s your ego, your vitality, your energy. how you express yourself. as cafeastrology puts it, its the “boss” of your personality. if rising sign is your first instinct and the moon is your emotional reaction, the sun is what comes in when you’ve slept on it. the sun is who you are at your core. rising is how people who have just met you might describe you, the sun and all your particulars is what your friends know you as. anyone who’s ever glanced at hope can tell you she’s intimidating and stand-offish. it’s only her friends who will tell you she’s intimidating and impulsive and a pillar of light and energy and kindness.

Impatience is a definite vice, and innovation is a tremendous strength. You very likely love to start anything new, and you have trouble sitting still. You are a pioneer in many of the things you do, and you possess a fundamental quality of bravery that is unmistakable! Aries knows what they want, and they know the quickest route to getting it. above all else, i think what convinces me that she’s an aries rather than a scorpio is although her scorpio rising might tell her to slow down, think things through. when it comes down to it, hope will ALWAYS act. and that’s a pillar of aries.

interestingly, going on a slight tangent about houses. 10th signifies career and reputation and 6th house signifies ailments, work, subordinates. and her 10th house ruler, the sun, is in the 6th house. which STRONGLY suggests a career dedicated to being in service to others. and considering hope is always the one they turn to if they need help that feels entirely appropriate

moon - cancer ♋️

the moon is your emotions, how you react to emotional situations. if tvdu ever spoke in astrological terms, i’d say when a vampire turns off their humanity THIS is the planet that gets affected and functionally turned off.

the moon is in rulership here. cancer, as a water sign, is stereotypically considered the most emotional sign. no humanity!hope was moon in cancer-less. i think you can see where i’m going with this.

she feels EXCEEDINGLY deeply. it’s what makes her so kind and compassionate. this placement also lends itself to being terminally tied up in the past.

Their memories of the past are outstanding, especially for all things emotional. Moon in Cancer people are rarely detached–they cling to things, their home, and people they care for.

she feels in extremes. when she’s sad, she’s devastated. when she’s happy, she’s elated. it’s why she had to turn this part of herself off after killing landon, because if she felt it all she would drown in it.

mercury - pisces ♓️

mercury is the mailman, it’s the word processor, it’s how you put out and take in information

pisces being a water sign means that all the ways in which words are expressed are fueled by emotion

there are VERY few moments i can think of in which hope is stating anything matter-of-factly. her words are always laced with idealism or hurt or love. she is not a person that speaks with facts or figures to get her point across nor is she particularly interested in debate

mercury is also ironically in detriment here. mercury, as a by-the-numbers kinda guy, is not comfortable in the water, mutable nature of pisces. as such, it can certainly be debated that hope does not garner loyalty from being a powerful orator (in fact she often tends to lose discussions the super squad puts to a vote) but rather she sways a crowd by her presence (scorpio ascendant), leadership (sun in aries, 10th in leo), and prowess (mars in aries)

what i find interesting is with my proposed chart, her mercury falls in the 5th house of children and creation. which falls in-line with expressing herself through her art and suggests being particularly artistic in general

although this placement does lend itself to being rather soft spoken and dubious, that quality is certainly overruled by other things in her chart, such as her mars in aries

venus - pisces ♓️ venus - scorpio ♏️

okay this is admittedly not denoted by the chart i have for her above. nor is it even theoretically possible since venus tends to trail pretty close to the sun. BUT considering hope is a fictional character i will take some creative liberties

venus in scorpio natives defining quality is their unyielding loyalty to those they love. and given hope’s absolute dedication to landon being such a central part of her character, her venus being here seems like the only viable option.

if i were to give blockquotes from cafeastrology for this one i’d end up pasting the whole thing, so for this one in particular i’ll just link to the page for you to read at your own discretion. (scroll down to venus in scorpio) i believe it describes hope’s approach to love to the T, particularly in her relationship to landon.

what i will paste though, is an excerpt from the also relevant scorpio ascendant description, since the sign opposite your ascendant is often indicative of the type of partner you look for (in this case the sign opposite scorpio is taurus, i haven’t looked into landon’s sign yet but if i had to guess i’d say an earth sign isn’t too far off)

this is the planet i changed a whole year for. its a slow moving planet and keeping at 2012 (the canon year) would’ve made fall it in virgo. i liked how the chart was going so far given several other planet alignments were in place as you see here. but when i got to mars i hit a road block. above all else i think hope is pretty impulsive. and although that’s certainly an aries sun quality by itself, she doesn’t lend to the meticulous slow-going nervous energy of virgo mars (i would know i am one) and given that a scorpio rising would make her chart ruler mars in turn, i couldn’t stand leaving it there.

scorpio ascendant, ruler of the ascendant mars in aries description:

so with the sun exhalted in aries, and a scorpio rising making her chart ruler mars in domicile. it’s safe to say hope has a A LOT of mars energy in my configuration. as god intended 😌

TLDR; to sum up we changed the canon chart that had a lot of earth in her personal planets, to a lot of fire and water which i feel is more in-line with her character. imo hope mikaelson is not a taurus, since she has zero of the venusian energy that would lend to harmony, connection, and peace. instead i propose she has mars energy with a scorpio rising, chart ruler mars in aries, and sun exalted in aries. thank you coming to my ted talk

Where Love Rests

The Nublar Six visit Italy again two years later. Yaz decides it's the perfect place to propose to her girlfriend.

Chapter Four: A Minor Setback

By the next day, Yaz could potentially be considered a bit of a mess. 

She'd expected a bit of stress when it came to things like sneaking out to pick up the engagement ring, as well as hiding it from Sammy when she finally had it. However, she had not properly accounted for the in-between time, in which she had to continue trying to make plans for a good proposal in close proximity to her girlfriend without tipping said girlfriend off. Additionally, she'd failed to consider the fact that her ability to hide anything from Sammy had eroded over the years. 

They could read each other like books, and usually, that was a good thing. But right now? Yaz kind of wanted to slam her head into a wall. Just a little bit. 

She resorted to saying very little when Sammy was around and taking every possible opportunity for a moment to herself. Honestly, it felt a bit like divine intervention when Sammy told her she was going out with a few of the others to pick up breakfast and Yaz could pretend to be too sleepy to join them. 

Unfortunately, the time alone didn't do her much good either. Instead of planning her upcoming proposal, she spent most of it getting into her head, until finally it became so overwhelming that she had to seek out the members of the group still in the house. 

Ben and Gia were sitting on the couch when she came to them, snuggling and murmuring to each other until they heard the door to Gia's room open and close. 

"Hey, guys," Yaz said, wringing her hands. "I'm kind of freaking out a little bit."

She had their attention immediately. Ben quickly sat up, apparently ready to stand and come to her if needed. 

"What's wrong?" he asked. 

"I know this is kind of out of nowhere, but I'm proposing to Sammy," she replied. "I bought the ring yesterday with Gia and Brooklynn."

Judging by the lack of surprise on Ben's face, it was not, in fact, out of nowhere.

"Oh... yeah..." He sheepishly rubbed the back of his head. "Brooklynn told us all yesterday. I mean, not Sammy obviously, but me, Kenji, and Darius."

Honestly, that was kind of a relief. Yaz didn't want to have to hide this from more people than necessary, and she felt a little better knowing she could go to any of them. 

"But, what's wrong?" Gia echoed Ben's earlier question. "Aren't you excited?"

"Of course," Yaz replied. "But... I don't really know what I'm doing. It was so impulsive, and now I'm wondering if maybe I jumped the gun. I don't know if Sammy's ready to get married. What if she says no? I cannot have this be the place we broke up and the place she rejected my proposal."

"Fadoula, you broke up for like, three days," Ben said flatly. "And trust me, she won't reject you. I don't know if you've seen the way she looks at you lately, but I have, and it's the kind of look you put a ring on."

"I mean, yeah..." Yaz couldn't argue with that. "But this whole thing is way more stressful than I thought it would be. It's all I'm thinking about, and she can always tell what I'm thinking, and I don't want to give it away."

"I don't think she suspects anything," Gia replied reassuringly. "It's just nerves."

"Really, really bad nerves." 

"Yes, but we're here for you." Gia stood up and walked over to Yaz, her arms open as if to give her a hug, but she didn't get that far. 

The front door clicked and began to creak open, and Yaz, in all her put-togetherness, immediately bolted from the room. She ducked into the bathroom and slammed the door shut behind her without a second thought, determined not to let Sammy see her until her anxiety settled. 

"We come bearing pastries!" Kenji's voice rang out through the house. 

"They're from that bakery we were looking at yesterday," Darius added. "We probably bought too many, but you can thank Kenji for that."

"Brooklynn's the one who grabbed a million of the pistachio ones," Kenji shot back. 

"They were fresh!" Brooklynn protested. "Literally just came out of the kitchen."

"It's all fresh," Gia replied with a small chuckle. "But the pistachio ones are my favorite too."

Most of the voices began to recede into the kitchen, chatting and calling dibs on various pastries, but Yaz stayed put, because Sammy's had not been one of them. 

"Yaz isn't still sleeping, is she?" she asked, right on cue. 

"Nah, she's up," Ben said. "Just in the bathroom."

There was a brief pause, then Sammy continued, "have you guys... noticed anything weird about her lately?"

Fuuuuuuuck.

"What do you mean?" Ben inquired innocently. 

"I noticed she wasn't talking much yesterday," Sammy explained. "When we all went out last night, she kept walking off by herself, too. And this morning, she really didn't want to get up and come get breakfast with us."

"Maybe she's just tired?" Ben guessed. "I mean, between the plane and the timezones-"

"I thought that too, but I dunno..." Though Yaz couldn't see her, she could clearly picture the anxious expression on Sammy's face. "There was something she said the other day, and it's making me worry. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I've just got that girlfriend intuition, y'know? I feel like there's something she's not telling me."

If it weren't for the noise it would have made, Yaz would have knocked her head against the bathroom door. She felt awful for stressing Sammy out, and now she was going to have to come up with an excuse on the fly. 

"Gia, did she say anything while you were out running yesterday?"

Unless...? 

"Well..." Gia began slowly, clearly not accustomed to being put on the spot. "She did say there was something wrong with her stomach. Maybe she's still not feeling well."

Oh my God, nooooo. 

Yaz appreciated Gia for trying, but what the sweet, naive woman didn't know was that she'd almost certainly made things worse. 

Sammy, in her boundless love and affection for those around her, had this tiny little habit that Yaz normally adored. She loved taking care of people. She loved making a bad day better. And if she thought anyone she cared about was in a bad way, her instinct was to fuss and dote until things improved. 

That went triple for Yaz, who hadn't had so much as a cold without the whole day cleared, any meal she wanted homecooked to perfection, minimum six hours snuggle time, and a constant hovering presence ready to fulfill just about any reasonable request since they'd moved back in together. 

It was endearing, really, and often extremely helpful, but so, so bad for making secret proposal plans. 

"Really?" The anxiety in Sammy's voice increased significantly. "Was it bad? She usually tells me when she's sick."

"Listen, I'm sure she's just jetlagged or picked something up at the airport," Ben said. "I wouldn't worry too much."

"Well, I am worried, Ben," Sammy retorted firmly. "She's not acting like herself. Why would she hide being sick?"

"Maybe you should just ask her," Ben replied, calm and even. Yaz could practically feel Sammy's eyes going to the bathroom door. 

"How long has she been in there anyway?" she asked. "You think she's alright?"

Cool. Great. Now Yaz had to come up with some explanation for her behavior that would placate her doting girlfriend, and she had a time limit. The longer she stood around in here, the less convincing she would be when she told Sammy she wasn't sick. 

Awesome. Thanks, Gia. 

In an effort to appear normal, Yaz flushed the toilet and washed her hands, taking that time to script out how she was going to do this in a way that didn't seem suspicious with what Gia had already said. 

She had been feeling nauseous yesterday, but it had passed. Ben was right; she was just sleepy and jetlagged. No cause for alarm. Absolutely none at all. 

Finally, she opened the door and tried to exit as nonchalantly as possible. Sammy's eyes found hers immediately, and after a brief moment of contact, she knew she hadn't sold it. 

"Hey," Sammy said gently, heading over to her. "Gia said you weren't feeling well."

"I'm alright," Yaz began, and that was as far as she got before Sammy suddenly leaned in closer, her brow furrowed with concern. 

"Oh, honey, you're pale." Sammy brought a hand up to cup Yaz's face. "And a little clammy. You weren't throwing up, were you?"

"No," Yaz insisted. "I'm fine, babe. I'm just-"

"Actually, you do look kind of pale," Ben chimed in, sounding genuinely surprised and a little concerned. 

Damn, was she that nervous? Regardless, not helping. Yaz shot him a glare, and he and Gia quickly slunk off into the kitchen. 

"Seriously, I'm okay." But it was too late, it seemed. Sammy was having none of it.

"Are you trying to tough it out because we're on vacation?" she asked sternly. "Because I know you know better than that."

In that moment, Yaz had a choice to make. She could try to come up with some reason other than being sick or hideously anxious that she might be standing here apparently visibly unwell, or she could commit to Gia's ruse and try to steer it from there, taking the benefit with the consequence. 

"I don't want to make a big deal out of it," she said, allowing her voice to become just the slightest bit pathetic. 

Sammy's eyes softened instantly. She made a low, sympathetic sound in the back of her throat; that distinct poor baby sound she tended to make when Yaz rolled her ankle or couldn't get back to sleep after a nightmare. A reminder that Yaz's pain would always, in some respect, be her pain as well. 

Again, Yaz felt terrible for causing her any concern.

"You look ready to fall over." Gently, Sammy put an arm around her and began to guide her over to the couch. "I wish you'd just told me. I won't make a fuss if you don't want me to, but we've talked about stuff like this. Why suffer in silence when you don't have to?"

"Sorry..." Yaz sat down at the end of the couch and leaned against the arm rest. Sammy knelt down in front of her, her eyes betraying her urge make a fuss despite her promise. "I just want you to enjoy the trip."

"And I want you to enjoy the trip," Sammy replied. "I'm sorry you're feeling bad. Is there anything I can do?"

"I think I just need to take it easy this morning," Yaz said. "Hopefully, I'll be okay if we decide to do something later."

"Don't force yourself." Sammy stood and planted a gentle kiss on Yaz's forehead. "Do you want anything to eat? We were just at that bakery nearby. We bought a bunch of croissant-looking things that smell heavenly." 

"That sounds great." Yaz started to rise as well, but Sammy gestured for her to stay put. 

"Don't get up. I'll grab you one. Do you want chocolate, custard, or pistachio?"

"Custard."

"Got it. Be right back."

Sammy gave her another quick kiss before heading off to retrieve the promised pastry. That left Yaz with about a minute, possibly less, to figure out what to do with this new predicament. Fuss or no fuss, Sammy would undoubtably be paying her extra attention for the time being, meaning Yaz didn't know when she would next be free to make preparations. 

Desperately, she pulled out her phone and opened up her private messages with Brooklynn. 

Yaz: Hey, so Sammy thinks I'm sick and I don't know what to tell her without letting her know. She's not gonna leave me alone today and I still need to get everything together. Might need a few favors?

She waited anxiously for a response, hoping that Brooklynn's phone wasn't anywhere Sammy could see it. A few seconds later, her salvation came in two quiet dings. 

Brooklynn: Y'all are killing me.

Brooklynn: Fine.

Hello everyone-- Just letting you all know the old COG Demo is back up now! I was beefing with what I can only assume was some cache/file updating problem for a while but now it should work.

Okay, hear me out---

Season 1 was Darius and Kenji

Season 2 was Ben and Brooklynn

Season 3 was Smoothie and Gia

Season 4 is going to be Yaz and Sammy

Hopefully that's coherent I had this idea pop up while i was still half-asleep

I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else but like, Yaz and Sammy aren't exes. I don't think either of them would see it that way.

They separated because of circumstances getting in the way of them having a productive conversation, but that doesn't mean they don't ever intend to circle back to it once the circumstances are resolved. I can't honestly believe they have no intentions of ever talking things out. They couldn't at the moment, but I feel like the scene fading to black before we can see them discuss this move at all is telling.

Like, do we really think Sammy told Yaz "I don't want you in my life anymore" or anything of that nature? She would literally never. But not knowing exactly what they said adds to the tension. Makes things feel uncertain. Makes the audience feel more in response to this than we would if they just outright said "yeah we'll talk later".

But even Gia acknowledges an uncertain path rather than a closed door with her "not knowing what, if anything, the future holds for you". Yaz is actively looking for signs that Sammy might be ready to talk. Sammy is actively waiting for Yaz to approach her.

They're taking a break. And it still upsets them; it still hurts to not be able to talk to each other right now. It's still scary to not know exactly what they're going to do about all this.

But I don't think either of them are anywhere near the stage of thinking about each other as an ex when it's only been a couple of days and they're both still clearly hoping for an opportunity to communicate.

And you can't honestly tell me, even if Sammy and Kenji had made it back to the States, that Yaz wouldn't have every intention of finding her and working it out when things are dealt with and they've had some time and space. Or that if it took too long Sammy wouldn't eventually break and say something.

They're still each other's person. That hasn't changed, and it's not going to.
