more on writing muslim characters from a hijabi muslim girl
- hijabis get really excited over pretty scarves - they also like to collect pins and brooches - we get asked a lot of questions and it can be annoying or it can be amusing, just depends on our mood and personality and how the question is phrased - common questions include: - “not even water?” (referring to fasting) - hijabis hear a lot of “do you sleep in that?” (we don’t) and “where is your hair?” (in a bun or a braid, usually) - “is it mooze-slim or mozzlem?” (the answer is neither, it’s muslim, with a soft s and accent on the first syllable) - “ee-slam or iz-lamb?” (it’s iss-laam, accent on the first syllable) - “hee-job?” (heh-jahb, accent on the second syllable)
- “kor-an?” (no. quran. say it like koor-annn, accent on the second syllable) - people tend to mess up our names really badly and you just get a sigh and a resigned nod or an awkward smile, maybe a nickname instead - long hair is easy to hide, short hair is harder to wrap up - hijab isn’t just covering hair, it’s also showing as little skin as possible with the exception of face, hands, and feet, and not wearing tight/sheer clothing - that applies to men too, people just don’t like to mention it ( i wonder why) - henna/mehendi isn’t just for special occasions, you’ll see people wearing it for fun - henna/mehendi isn’t just for muslims, either, it’s not a religious thing - henna/mehendi is not just for women, men also wear it, especially on their weddings - there are big mehendi parties in the couple of nights before eid where people (usually just women and kids) gather and do each other’s mehendi, usually just hands and feet - five daily prayers - most muslim kids can stutter through a couple verses of quran in the original arabic text by the age of seven or eight, it does not matter where they live or where they’re from or what language they speak natively - muslim families tend to have multiple copies of the quran - there are no “versions” of the quran, there has only ever been one. all muslims follow the exact same book - muslims have no concept of taking God’s name in vain, we call on God at every little inconvenience - don’t use islamic phrases if you don’t know what they mean or how to use them. we use them often, inside and outside of religious settings. in islam, it is encouraged to mention God often and we say these things very casually, but we take them very seriously - Allahu Akbar means “God is Greatest” (often said when something shocks or surprises us, or if we’re scared or daunted, or when something amazing happens, whether it be good or bad; it’s like saying “oh my god”) - Subhan Allah means “Glory be to God” (i say subhan Allah at the sky, at babies, at trees, whatever strikes me as pleasant, especially if it’s in nature) - Bismillah means “in the name of God” and it’s just something you say before you start something like eating or doing your homework - In Shaa Allah means “if God wills” (example: you’ll be famous, in shaa Allah) (it’s a reminder that the future is in God’s hands, so be humble and be hopeful)
- Astaghfirullah means “i seek forgiveness from Allah” and it’s like “god forgive me” - Alhamdulillah means “all thanks and praise belong to God” and it’s just a little bit more serious than saying “thank god” (example: i passed my exams, alhamdulillah; i made it home okay, alhamdulillah) - when i say we use them casually, i really mean it - teacher forgot to assign homework? Alhamdulillah - our version of “amen” is “ameen” - muslims greet each other with “assalamu alaikum” which just means “peace be on you” and it’s like saying hi - the proper response is “walaikum assalam” which means “and on you be peace” and it’s like saying “you too”

some of my fave atla post-war Azula headcanons (AKA I like to cry):
Ozai doesn’t live long after the war - he starves himself out of spite. He is cremated and his ashes are scattered across the hillside. Zuko and Iroh are the only people who attend the ceremony.
After Ozai passes, Zuko makes a point to see Azula every day. Months pass. She doesn’t say a single word until Zuko enters with a small cake Aang baked with a single candle. After he’s finished humming the traditional birthday song, Azula looks at him and says, “i couldn’t remember when my birthday was”. Zuko cries himself to sleep that night.
Years pass before Azula is trusted to take unsupervised trips away from her jail/hospital. When she sees a fire lily for the first time in years, Ty Lee and Mai see her cry for the first time in their lives.
By the time the assassination attempts have subsided and Zuko has gained a decent amount of control over the nation, Azula joins his ministry as an advisor. she is invaluable. when she nearly dies protecting Zuko from a particularly skilled and stubborn assassin, Katara heals her and calls her “sister”. Azula cries for the second time in her life.
The first time Azula laughs at one of Sokka’s awful jokes, you can hear a pin drop before Sokka laughs so hard he cries.
Katara will not let him forget that Azula is the only person who finds his jokes funny.
Toph and Azula have arm wrestling contests almost every day.
The gaang + Mai and Ty Lee learn quickly that Azula actually loves beach volleyball and make it a point to play it as often as they can
The first time Azula steps foot on Ember Island after the war, her and Zuko stare silently at the family house before Zuko says, “we’re home”. Azula dusts the pictures of her mother off. Zuko packs away the portraits of their father. Every year on her birthday, this is the only place Azula wants to be.
Eventually, Zuko gives Azula full property rights to the Ember Island house as a birthday gift.
For his wedding, Azula gifts Zuko their parents’ simple gold wedding bands he thought his father had no doubt thrown away. He weeps.
It takes a long time, too long Katara argues, but one day Azula wakes up in her prison to Iroh sitting outside her cell. This continues for weeks until she finally tells him to go away. He looks at her with tears in his eyes and says, “i have failed you, Azula.” it’s not exactly an apology, but the next day, Azula accepts the tea cup he offers her. forgiveness, she learns, feels nearly the same as grief.
Katara and Azula enjoy doing morning stretches together.
Azula is actually, like, stupid good at art???? Sokka hates it.
Azula earns enough from her art and royal duties to buy her own small estate off the Fire Nation coast, where she spends the majority of her time.
the gaang shows up uninvited way too often and Azula will die before admitting she looks forward to their impromptu visits
Azula and Aang play a dumb amount of pai sho together. like, a stupid amount of pai sho. their games last days.
when Zuko hears rumors of a dragon egg, he takes his sister with him. when they discover two, she takes the other and dotes on it so much, Sokka is both perplexed and amused. the rest of the gaang are just vaguely bemused. the dragons are spoiled rotten nonetheless.
Azula lives a long life, free from her father and abuse. she is free. she is happy. she is content. she heals. Zuko and her heal together and she gets to have a family that loves her. all is well.

I think more people need to add /s and /j into their online vocabulary and this isnt a joke whatsoever
/j stands for /joke and if u put it at the end of ur sentence that means ur joking
/s stands for /sarcasm and if u put it at the end of ur sentence that means ur being sarcastic
a lotta autistic people (and other neurodivergent ppl tbh) have trouble reading tones in peoples sentences so if you add /j or /s it doesnt like… distract from the sentence but it makes it clear that youre joking/being sarcastic, so people who wouldnt have necessarily read the correct tone will now know what tone its supposed to be conveying
Anyways. Use /s and /j
