The ace rep in isat means the world to me

Bare with me here i am not always good at words and i just wanted to ramble a lil

Spoilers for act 3

Ace rep is still pretty rare in media let alone anyone who is explicitly aroace. Lots of ace rep makes the characters aro by default without intentionality behind it duo to inherently missing the difference between ace and aro folks. I've also seen some instances of making ace or aro coded characters cold and detached from people at large

(we are going to ignore this gets reset in the timeloops its still good character writing)

Mirabelle doesn't want to date and while Siffrin cannot relate to this aspect they are able to help her come to a realization about her own identity by relaying thier own experience of being ace. They help her to feel less alienated in her identity and resolve to try and make changes for other folks who may feel alienated by the way the change belief (or society) has deemed romantic and or sexual relationships as important to one's identity.

Because yeah. Not being in or even wanting to be in a relationship does not make you less of a person.

And like. I ADORE Mira as the games aroace rep. She's emotional! She cares so deeply for the people around her. She likes romance books but is content with that to remain in the world of fiction which is a pretty common aro experience from my understanding (I am demiromantic ace so my experiences are a bit different). I just think that the canon aroace rep in the game being the girl who reacts to everything so strongly and loves horror books is neat. Mira has so much love in her heart for people without having to have any of it be romanticly motivated

i also like that despite being in her 20s she's still figuring out parts of her identity like this. It's a very relatable experience for me who also started figuring a lot of this stuff out as I got older

Sif being a touch avoidant touched starved ace though. He just like me fr fr. I have so many thoughts on how he still craves physical intimacy (non sexually obviously) and how that sort of thing is kinda ignored in a lot of ace media.

So what I'm learning from this is people really like John Doe and people haven't read the locked tomb

Go read the locked tomb it's got 3 books currently and another on the way

A lot of people will describe it as necromancer lesbians in space but a better explanation is necromantic murder mystery in a gothic manor

Some of the main characters include:

- harrowhark, a tiny nun with unbelievable amounts of necromantic power and Gideon, a lesbian jock who is supposed to be her cavalier (bodyguard) (this is a new development), and they have hated each other's guts since they were toddlers

- John Gaius, god. See his description in the poll. Also he's a problem and he knows it

- Magnus and Abigail Pent, the necro and cav pair from the fifth house, they are married (against tradition) and every other necro and cav finds this weird, they also act like they're substitute parents for the pair from the fourth house, Isaac and jeannemary, who are like 14

- dulcinea, flesh magician from the 7th house dying of cancer bc the 7th thinks it boosts necromantic energy, and protesilaus, her massive cav who says nothing for the entire book

- palamedes sextus, master warden of the library, and Camilla hect, absolute badass, from the sixth house. Seriously, Camilla rules she's got not one but 2 knives, maybe more

This is getting kinda long so couple of fun facts: multiple unrelated Gideons, so so much grief all the time, none of the pov characters know what's happening and neither will you, and so many meme references

- the first necromancer, created the 9 necromantic houses by resurrecting the solar system

- incredibly powerful necromancer (bone, flesh, and spirit magic), once reformed himself after getting vaporized

Jonathan Sims, the Archivist

- the specialest little guy of the Ceaseless Watcher, a fear god surrounding eyes, knowledge, and being perceived

- avatar, the Eye heals him supernaturally quickly, functionally immortal

- has vaporized multiple people with his mind

- asexual

- canonically greying in his late 20s, has so so many scars

John Doe, the Undefeated

- piece of the King in Yellow residing in a 1930s private investigators eyes and arm

- purple prose, says Arthur's name a lot

- tenacious, stubborn, determined, survived the dark world and the dreamlands for quite a while

- the survivability of a cockroach

- supernaturally wooden finger

Jonny d'Ville, First Mate

- mechanical heart that regenerates and resurrects him

- immortal steampunk space pirate C̶a̶p̶t̶a̶i̶n̶ First Mate of the starship Aurora

- unfathomably old through time shenanigans

- permanent death that is foretold (bar fight)

- loves guns and blowing things up and violence

- played by Jonathan Sims who wrote and voiced Jonathan Sims the Archivist

- narrator, dramatic, too many belts

For the purposes of this exercise:

- the Resurrection Beasts are nowhere near J. Gaius for the entirety of the battle

- they are nowhere near a bar fight for the entirety of the battle

- J. Sims has his full Archivist powers

- J. Doe has Arthur, is able to manifest as in part 40, they have their bag and whatever the hell is in it (glass, stone, mask, books, etc), and they have a gun and as many bullets as they would reasonably carry

- J. Doe and Arthur will not be receiving help from Kayne for the duration of the battle, but they start with no serious injuries and are not currently fighting with each other

- teamups are allowed, through there can be only one left alive at the end

- no one has access to their allies (the other Mechanisms, the Archives crew, the Lyctors, the Mithraeum, or the 9 houses)

Dead Boy Detectives was surprising.

It surprised me when, instead of Crystal dropping in and fracturing Charles and Edwin's thirty years of friendship, they went with Crystal sinking into the fold of Charles and Edwin's friendship and becoming an important and unique addition to the group.

It surprised me when, instead of Gay Boy Pining Over Straight Best Friend, they went with Gay Boy Realises Feelings For Straight Best Friend And Confesses Almost Immediately with a bonus of Straight Boy Accepts Confession With Surprising Grace And Nothing Changes, Not Really.

It surprised me when, instead of making the female characters repetitive and semi-rational and ultimately less powerful, they went with characters who are smart and selfish and kind and cruel and strong and flawed and oh, they happen to be female too.

It surprised me when Charles liking Crystal did not affect one bit of how much he loved Edwin.

It surprised me when Jenny talked about spinsters with cats and Niko did not bat an eye.

It surprised me with Edwin and Niko. It surprised me with, we have forever to figure the rest out. It surprised me with Crystal's kindness, Jenny's empathy, the casual and absolute, the good you do will come back around.

Dead Boy Detectives was surprising. One day, I hope I can sit back and watch another show and none of this has to be surprising anymore.
