everyone knows i love el, but the writing for season 1's el specifically was actually peak. she was the character who initially hooked me to stranger things, and boy she did not disappoint that season. not only was her concept pretty unique, millie's performance was everything, and her situation is so different to how abuse is usually portrayed. eleven's "creation" was not an accident, it was scientific and intentional. she was born to possess these extremely dangerous supernatural powers, and she doesn't really understand them. her entire life she has only been assessed and valued by these powers, and she is regarded as a mere machine. anything she feels that is even remotely human brenner not only disapproves of but also actively tries to repress, as he knows it would only make her stronger if she was allowed to truly know these things, and he needs control over her no matter what.

so when she breaks out into the real world, something so completely foreign to her, she has to navigate all of this brand new information AT THE SAME TIME she is running and hiding from her abusers AT THE SAME TIME she is helping these virtual strangers find this boy she doesn't even know. unfortunately her role in season 1 is all she is used to, being wanted and needed just for her powers. while mike and the other boys are young, they don't help very much. mike asks her what is wrong with her and berates her for not finding will multiple times, lucas is deeply mistrusting of her off the bat, and dustin sort of views her as this superhero who can do cool stuff with her mind. you can FEEL this rage building up in her all throughout the season, the frustration of knowing that she doesn't like this, doesn't like herself. everybody else already seems two steps ahead of her at all times because they've gotten to live relatively normally while she's had to endure her life. but she has no idea where to go with this. it's really only joyce who truly gets down to her level and sees her for who she is---a terrified little girl who just so happened to get caught up in all of this mess out of no fault of her own. she even tells el she is brave, and she doesn't have to go in the bath if it gets too scary, the first time el has ever been presented with any reassurance, any acknowledgement that she is scared, any CHOICE to use her powers or not. this is a whole new concept to el, and she doesn't even know how to react.

el's character in season 1 is just so haunting to me. the way she just stares wordlessly. the way she barely speaks because she never, ever spoke for herself in the lab. the way she has these immense bursts of power (throwing lucas, flipping the van) that seem almost bigger than she is. the way she seems to be caught up in these cycles of exploitation. the way that no one really understands her, not even herself because she's never been given that chance before. that scene with her crying in the bathroom always gets me because she just seems so broken. this girl cannot know peace, but i love her more than anything and i want a happy ending so bad for her because she arguably deserves it the most. she needs to be surrounded by people who love her for HER, figuring out who SHE is and what SHE wants to do and be.

The Quiet Bravery of Will Byers: A portrait of selfless love.

One of the most powerful, underappreciated acts of love is found in a simple painting. Will dedicates this deeply personal artwork to Mike, a gesture that speaks volumes about Will's character and the depth of his feelings. Creating such a painting would have taken immense emotional effort, not just artistically, but psychologically. Painting takes an immense amount of patience and dedication, and to dedicate an art to one person, requires unconditional love. He likely spent months on it, not only perfecting each brushstroke but also rehearsing the moment he would finally give it to Mike. That moment, however, does not come easily.

When Mike finally arrives in California, he seems changed, emotionally distant, awkward, almost unrecognizable to Will. Although Mike has his reasons, Will doesn't know about them. The long-awaited reunion is marked not by relief, but by a growing realization: the person Will loves may no longer see him in the same light, or perhaps never did, which definitely isn't true but Will might think it is. Still, Will waits. He doesn’t force the moment. He carries the painting with him, unspoken and hidden, just like his feelings.

When he finally gives Mike the painting, he claims El commissioned it. In that moment, although Will takes the opportunity and speaks about his feelings using El as a metaphor, fact still remains that he sacrificed his own emotional clarity to save El and Mike’s relationship. He lifts Mike up when Mike is doubting himself, not for Will's gain, but for Mike’s and El's. This is not “unrequited” love; it’s love that is patient, selfless, and accepting.

What makes Will’s sacrifice even more profound is that he’s a queer teenager in the 1980s, already carrying the weight of fear, repression, and isolation. To then love someone who, he thinks, may never return that love, and to keep that aside and choose to support them wholeheartedly, requires more strength than one might think. It’s a deeply moving, often overlooked piece of storytelling that deserves more recognition, even from those who may not ship Byler.

Will Byers represents a quiet kind of heroism, one rooted not in superpowers, but in emotional resilience and unconditional love. That painting is more than just a gift; it’s a mirror of his heart, offered to someone who, he thinks, may never fully see it the way he wants it to be seen.
