This makes sense in both a neurological development and social development way, but it fascinates me.
NDs spend their life, often unconsciously masking, if we don't mask we have been conditioned that it means a metaphorical or literal stick. Masking here, if you are unfamiliar with the term or act, means hiding the things that make us stand out that society deems too weird to be socially acceptable, in other words: tics, unusual expressions, etc. Add this to a mixed state of hyper and hypo senses that vary on a daily basis and it produces the same effect in the brain you find in people with PTSD and C-PTSD. The fight, flight, and freeze response rarely, if ever, fully switches off. We become naturals at living in survival based situations, and while ultimately unhealthy, it is nevertheless familiar to us.
Conversely, an environment in which these survival aspects are removed that is chaotic and overpopulated would naturally be overwhelming and unfamiliar. The inability to develop a mental "script" to blend into the situation, if not given ample time, produces a stress factor that cannot immediately be addressed. The result is a fear of that metaphorical or literal stick. Add in the sensory difficulties...
💙 I think I followed back around that time. I actually run a sideblog for making ask lists! I just like making lists, though sometimes I reblog other people's (like this one) just for kicks. 💙
You ever just realized how lucky you are that you did that weird thing that led to you being friends with the people you are friends with?
