The Saja boys in particular really irks me because there is so SO MUCH potential there

Each of them are so uniquely designed in a way that reflects real life boy groups and they each stand out from each other so well it just feels jarring to them not give them any character whatsoever. Like why do they follow Jinu? If they’re just mindless demons, why do they have a couple moments here and there that implies they have their own person?

In addition, the fact that they don’t seem to work with any other demons or humans for their idol concept kinda means they did all the music, choreography, etc… themselves and that could’ve been a fun way to add more character to them and reference groups who were the underdogs who came from nothing as opposed to Huntrix’s “2 of our members were already rich and famous”

And the thing that irks me the most is just how well they could’ve been written into Joni’s story arc. His trauma is of him leaving his family behind because he succumbed to the demon’s deal and patterns and the Saja Boys could’ve been his new family that he hadn’t realize how important they became to him.

The movie could introduce them as friends who just agreed to making the boy group because it was Jinu’s plan, them slowly realizing they kinda love this and are each good at something in it: rapping, dancing, high notes, etc….and then there’s a scene where Jinu gets annoyed at them because he’s still conflicted about his past, maybe like when he says they have to leave the signing, they kinda complain cause it was fun and then he lashes out at them. Finally it all culminates into a climax where he questions why they bother doing what he says if they don’t care about getting souls for gwi ma and they’re like “We did it because you asked us to, we’re family duh”.

Or something like that. LIKE THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS THEY COULDVE WRITTEN THEM INSTEAD OF JUST MAKING THEM CARICATURESSSS. Same goes for Mira and Zoey like they are quite literally only there to add to Rumi’s character arc rather then the story as a whole

Another bad use of formula is that Mira and Zoey turn on Rumi seemingly just because she hid her condition, which is a bullshit way of getting us to the emotional lowpoint of the climax. Rumi has been their friend for years! Pointing a weapon at her only validates her fears about the secret being revealed in the first place, and it cheapens their reconciliation later because Rumi is the one who initiates it and saves the other two when she's entirely blameless. Yeah, she was acting a bit overbearing before and she did things behind their back, but again, by guilting her about it they are validating those bad reactions in the first place.

It's also a waste of Mira and Zoey's characters as well. Instead of a tired Liar's Revealed plot, have Mira be angry at Rumi for something that actually takes her back to her bad relationship with her family. It doesn't have to be a particularly fair reason, just one that clearly stings enough, in fact, it would be better if it was slightly unfair and personal because then you could give Zoey a complete character arc of her own as well. Zoey is clearly affected by her parents' divorce, that's why she people pleases so hard, so have her freeze in this conflict between her two friends that puts her in a similar situation and then have her gather the courage to confront Mira and say, hey, I get why you're pissed and all, but Rumi's our friend and deserves our support right now in spite of your feelings. That way when they all sing together at the end it really is a culmination of all 3 of them overcoming their issues and becoming a family again.

And while we're talking about wasting secondary characters, I think the other Saja Boys should've had personalities of their own as well. I get that Rumi and Jinwu are the main course, but since these are apparently other demons that Jinwu recruited to his cause giving them a bare minimum of character interactions with him would help the movie structurally. They don't need to have deep personalities, or individual character arcs, or serious romances with the other girls, just show me what they think about the plan, or about their leader's weakening resolve, don't just have them stand there being pretty for the joke, it's not funny enough.

the series starts with her talking about the multiple times callisto kills her when she tries going on his route, I think it very much depends on the decisions the player make rather then which boy they choose that decides whether they die or not

the more accurate way to say this would be "girl you bought a slave, threaten him that you could throw him back at any time, then lovebombs him, and you didnt think that would end in a toxic mess??"

yes she did it as a survival tactic and yes there are numerous nuances to this descision and its aftermath but i still find it so fucking funny that penelope chose the yandere route and went mhm he's the safest quickest option like GIRL you played the game and you mean to tell me the normal mode didnt have any eckles red flags AT ALL???

I feel like whenever anyone brings this subject up people always clamor in with the "oh why are you defending a yandere" or "she's just trying to survive what she thinks is a game" and they just don't get that even though eckles is still at fault for his actions, so is penelope. What she did is still extremely inexcusable.

Sure even at the start eckles wasn't innocent and extremely damaged by the neglect and abuse he went through as a slave but if penelope hadn't treated him the way she did, I doubt he would've spiraled into what he ended up being.

Even callisto has bad endings where he kills penelope so logically Eckles would have a good ending too. People claim eckles is the "pitfall character" that is a bad choice from the start, which puts all the blame onto Eckles himself when in reality it's the way the player chooses to play that decides their fate. There was always a way to create a bond with Eckles the way she did with Callisto, which is treat him like a person, a human. Penelope just didn't make the right choices to do so and it was only because she crossed callisto off in her mind as a candidate that allowed her to not think about him as an npc and do just that, treat him like a human.

The relationship between Penelope and Eckles: A bad ending scenario.

Readers of the popular manhwa/novel "Villains are destined to die" are well aware of the dynamic between Penelope and her first choice for survival, Eckles and many claim that it is a toxic relationship, which it is, but what REALLY makes it not only toxic but also a bad ending scenario for the characters? A lot of people shift the full blame to Eckles for bringing Yvonne/Leila back to the Eckharts, thus putting Penelope in danger, but he isn't the sole person to blame.

The relationship in its simplest form is of a slave and his master. Their first meeting involves Penelope purchasing him from a slave auction for 100 million gold, and she makes it clear to him that he is still not a person in her eyes. The whole purpose of Penelope buying Eckles was for her own survival, yes but she doesn't try to hide what she sees him as: A pet or a dog that she is training to obey her every command.

Since Penelope is the slave master in this dynamic, she holds all the power that determines the fate of Eckles depending on if he obeys or disobey's what she wants out of him. Though she may be the most hated member of her household, she is still is the one with the money she used to purchase a human being or in her view a "pet"

The thing with Penelope that makes it harder to defend her when she does the things that she does is that the new soul in her body is originally from the modern era. She of all people should know better that slavery in general is one of humanities most disgusting crimes against itself and of all else, she has experienced severe abuse at the hands of her family, both her original family from the modern day and the Eckharts.

Penelope's own experiences and how they play into her abuse of Eckles.

As I'm sure we all know. Penelope was originally a poverty stricken girl who was barely getting by before she was adopted and welcomed into her new family when she was 12. Despite duke Eckhart being the one to adopt her, he does a half-assed job at it and pretty much gives up on trying to do anything more than the bare minimum when she supposedly starts acting out.

Her new brothers are no better than her original brothers and they absolutely despise her, seeing her as a shallow replacement of their lost younger sister and Penelope secretly wishing that Yvonne would either die or never come back did not help her case at all. Reynold would blame her for petty thievery to get out his frustrations on Penelope and Derrick was both lusting after her while wanting to trap and hurt her at the same time. The entire house family as all essentially a death trap where something as little as fork could kill Penelope. In general, she had no one she could trust and would be victim blamed if she ever voiced her concerns or even anger for her treatment.

However, when Penelope/ Cha Siyeon purchases a seemingly loyal Eckles, she doesn't believe that she could ever be at fault for being the master of a person who has been broken down so badly that he is essentially a blank slate for what could be considered grooming. Aside from Cha Siyeon being 20 and Eckles being 17, (which while that could be an interesting story to tell, I doubt that was meant the main point of why the relationship was abusive given that the body of Penelope is the same age.) The reason I believe that Penelope groomed Eckles is because even if you say, "But Penelope is also 17-18" Grooming can happen to anyone, children are the most vulnerable to it of course but it can also be applied to anyone around the abuser's age.

Grooming overall is taking somebody who is incredibly vulnerable and in need of care and exploiting that person by manipulating them through a built of trust to get what the abuser wants out them, which is usually sexual gratification but that's not what I think Penelope wants out of Eckles, what she wants is the safety she'll get from securing a good ending with one of the male leads and Eckles is the easiest to earn affection points from. The dynamic between them though is still under a huge power imbalance, where Eckles would not be allowed to say no to her no matter what she asks of him.

At first, Penelope thinks she is already doing a good job by doing the bare minimum for Eckles which at first includes not doing things that a lot of slave masters did to their slaves which you probably guessed, isn't really that worthy to earn an applause for not whipping a man. Besides, while Penelope hasn't been shown to be physically abusive, that doesn't mean she sees him as someone worthy of respect.

Below is a basic summary of what Eckles is to Penelope in panel form.

Penelope is essentially asserting her power over Eckles by reminding him that she has the power to send him back to slavery if she feels he is disobeying her.

If that alone isn't messed up, she is also given a ring that has the ability to paralyze Eckles if she presses it.

I don't think enough people realize how disgusting the choker and ring really are. If someone really wanted to, this ring could be used to paralyze Eckles, and he wouldn't be able to anything to stop the ring holder from doing whatever they want to him. I would say that he is extremely that Penelope's goal isn't sexual gratification but really, we shouldn't be congratulating a slave owner for not sexually abusing their slave

When the audience sees that Penelope is praising Eckles instead of verbally abusing him, defending him from other guards that see him as lesser, and buying him new clothes and a sweet new sword, it is believed that Penelope is already breaking the cycle of abuse by what is essentially love bombing Eckles, which is a common step in the grooming process that is typically used so that the victim will have a harder time recognizing the abuser as abusive when they think back to all the adoration they showed for them in the past.

Remember, Penelope is not doing these nice things for Eckles because she wants him to feel comfortable or because she loves him. She's doing it for her own benefit: Her survival. Later on, when their relationship progresses, it seems like to some level, that Penelope starts to enjoy the power she has over Eckles, not just in the form of relief that she feels like she'll be safe but also as a twisted form of power that she finally has for herself. Everyone from both of her lives treated like absolute shit out of pure hatred for her or in Derricks case, as a sick way to distract himself from the fact that he wants to cage Penelope and keep her as a hidden wife. This would be the first time Penelope had control of really anything at all, a human being, I do believe that the big reason Penelope doesn't acknowledge that she's hurting someone is because Eckles is "willingly" serving her, obeying everything she says, seemingly not minding that she sees him as a pet, and calls her master, that she technically isn't doing anything wrong because ECKLES is the one who wants it even though he is a 17 year old slave who wouldn't be allowed to hate her even if he wanted to. She can't possibly fathom that she is an abuser because Eckles, a person who has been broken down so many times that he sees no value in himself as a human and only as Penelope's pet, is the one telling her she didn't do anything wrong.

while the goal of surviving the game isn't unreasonable, Penelope seems to justify EVERYTHING she does with her own survival. As I said, she isn't the type of person who wants to admit she's become exactly what she hated, this is most obviously shown in recent chapters where she tells Eckles that the reason she attempted suicide was because of him and that if she knew she would have to see him again, it would have been better if she actually died.

She is completely ignoring the fact that she played a huge hand in dehumanizing Eckles as nothing but a tool and when that tool feels to have lost its purpose, she breaks his collar that was initially used to control him, setting him free which represents the toxic relationship beint broken off while still thinking of the person bitterly when she wishes Eckles well with his new master (Leila)

Eckles as an abuser.

Now before I get accused of painting Eckles as a soft lil victim who did nothing wrong. He, like Penelope, is not a perfect victim.

Since he has no human rights, the best way for him to survive is to do what his master wants even if he hates it. Eckles has been shown to fantasize about doing the same thing to her by trapping her by bringing Leila back to the mansion (He was brainwashed but I'm pretty sure Leilas powers work best when the feelings she's looking to amplify are already there.) and betraying his own people just so he can gain a commoner status and an excuse to force Penelope by his side.

Over time, he develops hatred for Penelope alongside his obsession for her. While he is categorized as a yandere, I believe that the reason Eckles "loves" Penelope is because he really just loves the idea of hurting her the same way she hurts him. Whenever this is because he thinks that abusing each other is just a way of expressing love, or if he genuinely wants to hurt her back as a form of resentment. He too, wouldn't be entirely opposed to abusing Penelope by isolating her and forcing her to rely on him and only him, perhaps even killing her himself, thus repeating the cycle of abuse yet again.

In general, this relationship was doomed to fail no matter if it was Penelope sending Eckles back to the auction house or if Eckles succeeded in defeating Callisto, It serves as a bad ending where nobody had to be better and take responsibility for their behavior. Penelope could continue enjoying the power she has over Eckles while Eckles isolates her and becomes violent enough to keep her away from everyone else in the outside world.

Of course! I really love hagimatsu’s relationship because they managed to paint such a strong bond that’s arguably more well written then some of the canon couples even, through essentially flashbacks and between 2 deceasedly introduced characters no less!

I wanted to add another thing which is Matsuda’s immediate response to seeing the bomb’s message.

Again, usually someone in his position who still has friends and family to go back to would start worrying or panicking and even if they have a calm composure and can compartmentalize, they would exhaust all possible alternatives before ultimately deciding death is the best option. But Matsuda immediately decides that he’ll give his life away to wait for the hint, the second he saw the message, despite there still being 4 minutes on the clock, which yeah is still short but it’s still far from being seconds from death. He definitely had time to try and look for another option.

Yet he didn’t.

I’m probably just looking into it way too deep but I feel like in that moment, Matsuda felt a sense of relief. Prior to this, he absolutely had to live. He still had his police academy friends, he still had miwako, he still had chihaya, who was his first love. He still had people to live for and the bomber who caused hagi’s death was still out there. And hell hagi died while on the line of duty so how could Matsuda do anything but live? He had no right to follow hagi into the afterlife when there were still people who cared for him and duties he needed to perform.

But then he’s stuck with a bomb 4 minutes from exploding, with no one else around that he would be obligated, as a police officer, to protect from the bomb, along with a purpose that needed him to stay. He would die in the line of duty just as hagi did and even save lives while doing so. No one could fault him for staying.

Sure he couldn’t bring justice to Hagi’s killer and yeah there’s probably people who will hurt just as much as he did from hagi’s death but that’s the beauty of this bomb, it’s entirely out of his hands. In a way that bomb became a salvation for Matsuda.

anyways sorry for making everyone cry againsgdhendjd but matsuda’s flashback always confused the hell out of me because why was this guy who’s so hellbent on taking the bomber down be so casual and smiley about dying like even by anime standards it’s a bit weird cause even then he’d be all frustrated about not taking the criminal to justice and stuff. I mean hell this dude’s last thoughts weren’t even about his remaining living friends or love interest or even the bomber who was his entire objective for the past 4 years, it was just Hagi.

12 Million Hostages - Matsuda Jinpei & Edogawa Conan Analysis : Why One Could Defuse the Bomb, While The Other One Couldn't Do The Same

"Trembling Police Headquarter: 12 Million Hostages" are one of the most beloved special episode of Detective Conan, which introduced Sato Miwako's previous crush, Matsuda Jinpei & his childhood friend, Hagiwara Kenji. We're given a heartwrenching story within 20 minutes.

The tragic and traumatic event, the grief, the malicious revenge, the sacrifice for common people. All of those was established in the beginning of the episode, and connected to the present timeline.

It's a very tense episode with a great climax and perfect, romantic end.

But this episode also made some people wondering, and understandably, upset.

"Why did Matsuda, a former ace from Bomb Disposal Unit who's also very smart, failed to defuse the bomb, while Conan who mentally 17 years old and physically 7 years old, managed to defuse it?"

Some people though it's just to highlight Conan's ability while lowering other people's.

Unfortunately, it's not based on nothing, because this series sometimes really do that to highlight Conan's ability & intellect.

But I have different perspective for this particular event.

So, in this thread, I'll explain my analysis on why the event of "Trembling Police Headquarter: 12 Million Hostages" make sense and not just plot device for Miwako's traumatic button, her subsequent romance with Takagi, nor for a simple parallel for Conan's succesful defusion.

1. First of all, their situation was already WILDLY DIFFERENT.

Jinpei's trapped all by himself, while Conan's trapped WITH Takagi. Even in the end, Conan said that he didn't have any plan to let Takagi die. That's why I don't think Conan would ever let the bomb explode.

On the other, Jinpei was alone. Even if the bomb exploded, the only casualty was him.

Even their explosion sites's already very different. Jinpei's in a simple ferris wheel, where the possible damage (only one seat destroyed) and threat for officers & civilians below were less.

While Conan was literally in the middle of Tokyo Tower, the symbol of Tokyo. Had the bomb exploded, it would also demolish the above part of the tower, which mean a MUCH more threat for the officers & civilians below around the Tokyo Tower.

2. Tapper

3 years ago, the police knew the culprit was among the crowd, since he exploded the control room when Jinpei's seat exactly on top. However, the bomb in Tokyo Tower have sound tapper, which mean the culprit isn't near the bomb site.

I have my own analysis about this.

Being watched so closely means the culprit in particular really paid attention to Jinpei's action. Especially because this is his first revenge after 4 years, compared to the present time where it's his second revenge.

To be honest, I think now it's also like a ritual for him.

Back to the point. Because the culprit watching closely, what does it make you think?

When you know the second bomb is already set in another place, a HOSPITAL even?

I think,

"He wanted to make sure everything goes as he planned. What will happen if I defuse this one?"

"Will the culprit angry that his plan is stopped early?"

Would Jinpei dare to trust the culprit's mentality?

Would Jinpei dare to risk the hospital's safety towards the unstable culprit who's watching his upcoming demise joyfully with a front row sit?

Well, Jinpei didn't dare.

Because Jinpei's a police officer who graduated from Police Academy while swearing to serve the people.

Moreover, if Jinpei walk away safely while correctly deducing the next site, the culprit who failed to kill a police would immediately explode the second bomb in hospital.

To "kill" a police officer, right?

Because the police officer choose to save his own life, and it caused the residents in the hospital to died.

A condemned police officer.

If his life was fine, then the culprit would kill his career & image to the world.

It's different from present time where he put sound tapper, walk away from Tokyo Tower. He's arrogant now. His plan was succesful once, and he thought this time will be too.

That's why Conan managed to deceive him & the culprit didn't know that the next bomb is already revealed.

This is a plan that is so succesful because of the past experience.

The culprit become arrogant because of his prio succesful plan, resulting on his loss now, while the police won now because the experience of previous tragedy, twice even.

A turnabout, but with a price.

3. Two People Work Together, One Person Work Alone

Conan and Takagi work together, one defuse the bomb while reading the code, and the other type the code and send the message.

It's easier for Conan to cut the wire because he's fully focused on the bomb.

Meanwhile, if Jinpei wanted to defuse it, he need to hold the tool, and he couldn't type the message.

"Why would he need to hold the phone? He can just memorize the code on the bomb, then defuse it in one go like Conan!"

Well, the previous two reasons, and one more after this.

4. Attachment

This is the most painful part.

Precisely because Conan has heavy attachment for 'alive' Ran, he could defuse the bomb.

He said it himself. He could deduce 'EVIT' as 'TANTEI' because he desperately wished Teitan Highschool IS NOT the next site of the bomb.

Meanwhile, Jinpei's attachment.... Was a 'dead' Kenji.

4 years of message to an email address who would never reply again.

Jinpei was grieving, and he never stopped grieving.

Conan have a big reason to come back safely for Ran, while Jinpei has none like that.

In the last moment, he regretted for not avenging Kenji, but he never mentioned any fear of death.

I guess if Jinpei died while capturing the culprit, Jinpei wouldn't regret anything at all. Because at least his revenge was completed.

THIS wasn't a face for someone with fear of death.

How could someone approaching death with such determined expression and happy grin, I wonder.

If he secretly feeling excited to finally joining Kenji in after life?

If he really regretted for not avenging Kenji so much, shouldn't his expression more frustrated?

.... So I guess I can only conclude that his desire for being with Kenji was much higher than avenging him.

I've said something before, in my conversation with friend.

In Detective Conan, all childhood friend have a connection in their heart. Even if they only meet once, that 'once' impact their whole life.

It's just very different with Jinpei and Kenji, Rei and Hiro, because they unfortunately lose their childhood friend, and in such tragic way.

That last part is the strongest point for me because yes a big part of why Matsuda did it was probably him logically thinking the situation through and realizing this was the best way to prevent more casualties and he has to prioritize the safety of the public first but if that was the only reason and nothing else, he would not look at content going into the afterlife.

His best friend's killer is still out there. He knows miwako has feelings for him that he could potentially reciprocate. You would expect him to look frustrated or regretful that he has to die when he still has stuff to live for, especially when no one is there to witness what emotions he's showing in the face of death, and the only reason he wouldn't be, the only reason that he's looking into the flames of hell so expectedly and with a smile on his face, is if there's something, or someone, in there that he's longing for more then a chance to keep living.

It just doesn't make sense any other way because if his feelings for miwako or rage at the bomber is stronger then his desire to see hagi again, he wouldn't look so hopeful in his final moments.

Kiruko’s gender identity is a hot topic to be sure and the story is still ongoing so there’s still more to be developed and I think the author purposefully left the gender identity itself open to interpretation from fans. I say the gender identity because it’s pretty obvious kiruko is not cis in any way but in way non-cis way kiruko is, what kiruko identifies with as someone who is not cis, is either something they’re still working through, or simply left open to the viewers.

Because the thing with japanese is that it doesn’t really have as complex a pronoun system as english. They have the first person pronoun that the user themselves use like boku or watashi or ore but that’s more flexible then the he/she/they in english. As in, while it’s more likely for boys to use boku and ore, it’s still not really out of the norm for a girl to also use them, as it’s more of an indentifier or masculinity/femininity then it is for genders itself.

All this to say, kiruko’s gender, as it is at the time of this post, is left very open to interpretations, with the exception of just “cis”.

Personally, I see kiruko as xgender or nonbinary. They don’t seem to stress over the sex of their body as much as the fact that they’re just *in* a different, new body now. And I personally would like for this to be the case because I don’t like the idea that someone is a girl just because they happen to be transplanted into the body of one. That just feeds into the transphobic and terf rhetoric of “oh well if you have boob and vagina then you’re a girl”.

I think kiruko is exactly what their name entails: a combination of kiriko and haruki. They have aspects of both but they are neither of those people now, they’re someone entirely different. Neither a boy or a girl, maybe some combination of that, but also neither of it.

I think this would also be really fun once they talk more with michika in the future and michika explains the whole thing with their gender and biology again and kiruko goes like “oh yeah me too! I’m not a boy or girl either :DD”

I've read plenty of gender bender and queer based manga and you can usually tell the difference between one where the purpose is for comedic shenanigans and is usually pushing cisheteronormative beliefs vs one where the author is genuinely trying to explore gender identities and queerness

In a gender bender where the purpose is only for comedic relief, the gender reveal would never be framed in this way. Why? Because it would be too similar to a queer coming out. These seroes want nothing to do with queerness and will prioritize "kyaaa boobs" and "oh no you fell on my tits" over anything that resembles a queer theme.

But heavenly delusion intentionally frames it this way because that's what it's trying to express. This scene is meant to be taken as an sci-fi take on an allegory or metaphor for a queer coming out. Is it realistic? No, at the moment, there is no real-world successful brain or consciousness transplant yet. But this is science fiction, it's taking real world concepts and putting a fictional spin on it ina realistic frame.

It's the author's way of expressing queerness using science fiction as a medium. Can it happen in real life? No, but why does it need to? I've said it before but cishet media ges to be as magical and fantastical as it wants to be but for some reason, queerness always need to be strapped down to reality?

Maru's immediate first priority upon learning kiruko's gender identity is what kiruko wants him to refer to him as, not how he's been crushing on a boy, or what his own beliefs regarding gender or sexuality is, but simply kiruko's comfort.

Sure he says he can't get used to the reveal immediately, but that'd exactly what he did in trying to ensure kiruko's comfort. His actions says more then his words.

This scene is many chapters later and maru still insists on liking kiruko despite knowing and accepting kiruko as a boy. "Not haruki, not kiruko(referring to the body's previous owner), but you."

This might seem like little but this is only what we see with maru and kiruko, the facility children has their own queer and gender themes independent from them and there will be canonical intersex characters.

While queer themes and themes of gender exploratiom are definitely present, the manga does not delve into it as a main topic of discussion, because the main theme of the series is the apocalyptic world and setting and the monsters and mysteries that inhabits it. The queer characters are simply living in that world.

The manga is still relatively in its early stages in my opinion, we really don't know much yet and that could very well change, the manga might delve further in the gender and queer thems in the future.

But even if it doesn't, is this not what we want? More queer characters simply existing? Does queerness always have to be analyzed and looked at up close and discussed at length for queer characters to be allowed to be queer in media? Are they not allowed to simply exist in the world?

Like we, the real life queer people, exist in the real world?

@reidhershel put this accurate af take in the tags of my post about heavenly delusion being a genderqueer series and I just wanted to further elaborate on it as the original post has a nsfw label because it does talk about topics such as intersex and the such so most people don’t see it. Please turn your nsfw filter off if you want to read it.

Anyways what you need to know is that a) there is a boy who’s consciousness was transplanted into a girl’s body and b) a group of children has been raised within a facility with no concept of gender their entire lives with at least half of them being biologically intersex and one of the children who has female features has been presented to the viewers by author as more male-presenting or androgynous and is referred to as “a young boy” in the manga’s synopsis.

Because of these more unorthodox executions of queer characters there is already a multitude of discourse from both anti-lgbt bigots as well as some of the lgbt+ community itself purely because of how unorthodox it is. Like Reid says, many people invalidates Kiruko(the boy who’s in a girl’s body)‘s queerness because of his unorthodox situation and a lack of explicitly statement that he is trans or queer I can imagine some people also invalidating Tokio in a similar way.

Cishet characters get to be cishet despite never once stating they are cishet. A male character kissing a female character is labeled hetero despite never saying they’re straight. A cis character is labeled as cis, again, despite never saying they are cis. So then why do queer characters have to explicitly state they are queer if they are already exhibiting queer traits?

A girl character should not have to explicitly be stated that she is gay or bi or pan if we see her kissing another female character. A gender neutral or non-binary character should not have to be explicitly stated as such if it is shown that they do not have a concept of gender. A character who has been presented as androgynous or masculine should not immediately be labeled a girl just because they have boobs. A trans boy should not have to be labeled as trans if he literally says he has a boy’s mind but within a girl’s body. A queer character should not need to state he is queer if he is professing his love to someone he knows is the same gender as him.

Cishet characters get to be as fantastical and magical and unorthodox and still be cishet so why are we trying so hard to strap queerness down to realism? Queerness has been discriminated against by almost every community and has had everything gatekeeped from it, please don’t gatekeep queerness itself from people and media you don’t deem as “queer enough” for you personally.

To be queer means to not conform to or being in line with what society’s expectations of gender or sexuality dictates you to and to then place expectations on that ideology itself, to place expectations on what being queer should be, goes against it entirely. It’s doing exactly what queer people are trying to break out of: having to fall in line with certain expectations to be seen as ‘valid’ in other people’s eyes.

Heavenly Delusion is a queer story, a really unique one where queer people gets to simply exist in a world instead of needing that world to be labeled as “queer” for them to be able to exist within in. It’s a chance for queerness to be normalized within media, don’t ruin this chance.
