Cheat Code #3 for accommodating disabled characters in sci-fi/fantasy:

If you want your setting to be accommodating, change the environment more than the person.

i.e.: On a worldbuilding level, if you want to portray a society that keeps disabled people in mind, then that needs to be reflected more broadly, even without your disabled character on screen. Because this means that your society was considering disabled people as part of itself when it was figuring out what's necessary.

If your computer takes voice commands, it should also have an optional keyboard in case someone can't speak.

If your magic school has multiple floors, it should have a teleporting rune circle for those that can't take the ever-changing stairs.

Whenever you have a feature you're adding, ask yourself—"If my character couldn't use this, what would they do instead?" And if the answer is "they'd have to wait until they could" or "they need someone else to use it for them," then your setting isn't accommodating. An accommodating setting always has an actionable answer to that question.

And as a bonus, if you follow through with it, oftentimes you'll end up with a more interesting world and story overall. Spells most people can speak can be written in ancient elven instead? That means you can have a character sneak a spell into a magic-banned city by writing it on their hair ribbon, and that it's possible that a book might be a self-generating spell on its own. Your spaceship has textured lines on the walls to let blind people navigate without guidance? Not only can you make it look artistic (different colored paints, glowing patterns), but now your engineer can make it to the warp core when the power's out and oxygen's finite.

Don't limit yourself just to what's needed in the moment. Figure out interesting alternatives to your setting's features, and your world will automatically feel more alive.

Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.

I'm new from Reddit, what do I do here?

CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.

Friends -- this is what fanfiction.net's front page looks like right now.

@beautifulfic advises (and I can confirm, I just checked it) that the mobile version of the site, m.fanfiction.net, appears still to be up. STRONGLY suggest that if you have material there that's not preserved elsewhere, you go in via the mobile gateway and archive it NOW.

Please reblog so others can take action.

ETA: @mylittleredgirl advises that if you attach “www.” to the front of the URL, the site displays correctly. But this is still concerning, and suggests somebody’s either monkeying around with their .htaccess file—a fairly important piece of under-the-hood "equipment" for a website—or has possibly misconfigured the site in some other way.

At the moment there's no telling what's going on. Meanwhile, if I had anything over there, I’d back it up anyway.

Excited about the idea of someone creating something based on your fan creation (like podfics, fanart, translations, etc)? What is a fanworks permission statement?

A fanworks permission statement (also known as a blanket permission statement or transformative works permission statement) is very simple: it's something you post in a publically-visible place (usually your AO3 profile) that tells other fan creators what you are and aren't okay with in terms of other people making fanworks based off your stuff. It can be as simple as a sentence or two, or as complicated as you want to communicate your preferences clearly.

Who should have a permission statement?

A permission statement is for anyone that creates fanworks! Yes, even if you don't think anyone would ever want to create something based off your fanworks. You never know! It's not egotistical to post a permission statement, it's HELPFUL. Yes, even if you don't want people making something based off your works. It means no one has to reach out to ask you, they can know your preferences right away.

What do I even say in a permission statement?

(QZGS RPW 2023 - day 6 - masterpost)

“Wow, this is nice,” Xu Boyuan says, looking around. “It’s bigger than I thought it would be.”

“Me too,” Wu Chen agrees. “I was surprised when I first came here as well.”

It’s quiet at Happy Guild HQ, this late at night, the last few lingering members logging off.

In a few minutes, he and Wu Chen are the last ones left. Wu Chen beckons him over to a cluster of computers at the head of the room, sliding into a chair and pushing an account card into a reader. 

“Here,” he says, and pushes an account card into the computer next to his. Boyuan pulls the chair out, settles himself at the computer, adjusting the keyboard and mouse as the game loads.

A Blade Master account called Spring Dawn appears on his screen. 

“How did you get this account name?” Boyuan asks, as he runs through the stats and equipment. “And what is up with this skill point distribution?”

Wu Chen laughs. “It’s a first server account,” he answers, “And the account stats should look familiar.”

“Wait. Is this based on my account from back in the day?”

“Originally, yeah, we were using this account to practise against, back in Golden Hour, but some Happy guild members have been using it recently, so it might look a bit unfamiliar. Anyway, want to play the pairs event with me?”

“Sure.”

They spend an easy two hours running around, looking for the presents hidden around the realm. It’s easy, playing with Dawn Rifle by his side, on a Blade Master that is definitely different but still somehow familiar. Their combined efforts put them in the running to be on the first page of the leaderboard, but not too much higher than that.

“Nice work!” Wu Chen says as they log off. 

“Thanks,” Boyuan says, a grin on his face. “What a team we would have made, if we’d played together.”

There’s an answering smile on Wu Chen’s face, one that fades into something nostalgic as he tidies up the account cards.

“Why did you name the account Spring Dawn, anyway?” Boyuan asks.

“Oh, um...” Wu Chen blushes.

“Yes?,” Boyuan prompts, eyebrows raised.

“Fine, I thought you were cute and my teammates named it that as a joke,” Wu Chen says in a rush, scanning the room to check that all the computers are off rather than look Boyuan in the eye.

“So do you still think I’m cute?” Boyuan asks, trying to keep his tone light. He puts his hands under his chin and leans on the desk. 

Wu Chen’s eyes snap to him for a second before looking away. “Um,” he hedges, stutters, “... yes.”

“My teammates teased me about the same thing,” Boyuan says.

“What, you being cute?”

“No. What? No. Me thinking you were cute.”

Wu Chen’s mouth drops open, just a little, before he recovers. “We’ve wasted so much time,” Wu Chen groans.

But they’re both smiling, so maybe it’s ok. 

Wu Chen grabs Boyuan by the hand. “Come on, let me treat you to the best sweet buns in the city.”

Xu Boyuan follows, eager to find out what else they could form a formidable team doing.

It still feels strange to be the Guild Leader. He never realised how much they actually did, and while Chen Guo and Blue Bri- Blue River did their best to help, there was still more than enough to keep his to-do list overflowing.

Blue River has logged off.

Speak of the devil.

Blue Bridge Spring Snow has logged on.

Well, only one reason that would happen. Wu Chen turns back to the guild reports when the guild chat pings with the notification that a Wild Boss had just spawned. Wu Chen laughs, then rolls his neck and gets to work. 

He has a Big Four Guild to fight.

Happy’s guild assembles like a gaggle of geese - noisily and with great hubbub. But assemble it does, and Wu Chen is the one to stay back and assess the formations, plan the path forward. 

Blue Brook arriving early has just about scuppered any chance of Happy picking up this Boss short of their captain showing up, but Wu Chen isn’t going to let it go without a fight.

A sword flashes in the corner of Wu Chen’s screen and it’s enough warning for him to pull Dawn Rifle back. Blue Bridge Spring Snow follows, sword still swinging.

“I still need your help with the books,” Wu Chen says, manoeuvring around and firing where he can.

“Who?” Blue Bridge Spring Snow asks. Wu Chen rolls his eyes.

In the chaos of the next few minutes, where both of them are fairly evenly matched, the fight at the Boss becomes a wild mess. Wu Chen knows when to concede, though, and issues the order to retreat. There’s a chorus of unhappy noises, but most of the guild seems content with causing Blue Brook Guild a bit of grief.

“See you next time,” Wu Chen shouts, grinning wide as Dawn Rifle disengages towards his guild, pulse thundering in his ears from the thrill of a good fight. He thinks he hears a laugh in reply, fading as the distance between their avatars grows.

Xu Boyuan finds Dawn Rifle in the game, alone, after their loss to Happy, wandering around outskirts of the main city in Heavenly Domain.

“Hey, tough match. You played well,” he says.

“Not well enough,” Dawn Rifle replies, “but thanks.”

"Does anyone play well enough into Happy?"

Dawn Rifle laughs, but it's small and a little rough. "Touché."

The two of them sit in silence for a few moments, before Boyuan feels compelled to break the silence.

“Waiting for the Guild?”

“No one left to wait for, anymore,” he says, and Boyuan thinks he can hear the wistfulness. 

Everlasting Guild hadn’t formally disbanded yet, but it did seem like it was just a matter of time. 

“Want to join me in running some dungeons?” Boyuan says impulsively. Almost guiltily, even, with the help that he'd given to Happy's Guild, no matter how unwillingly.

There’s a pause from the other player. Boyuan is about to break the silence when Dawn Rifle speaks up.

“Sorry. I’d love to, but I’m supposed to be meeting someone in a few minutes. Maybe later, if you’re still free?” 

“If I’m still on when you’re done, send me a message.”

“Will do.”

The two guilds rush into each other in a mess of particle effects.

Perched on a cliffside, Wu Chen surveys the battlefield. He had arrived with Everlasting Guild, when they had been the only guild on the scene. But it hadn't taken long for Blue Brook Guild to start amassing on the sidelines of the fight, threatening to encircle the smaller guild's formations.

Wu Chen wrinkles his nose in annoyance. There’s no way now that Everlasting can kill the Wild Boss while also holding the enemy forces back. 

“We should retreat,” he sends to the guild leader.

“OK,” comes the reply. 

Wu Chen lays down covering fire as Everlasting begins to leave.

His message notification pings. “Fancy seeing you here :)” comes the message from Blue Bridge Spring Snow. 

He laughs, but makes sure that the guild has vacated the area before he replies. “Hope the boss drops the worst loot :P”

“:( I’ll take you on in arena for that insult”

“You’re on.”
