Oakley "The Cunning" Davenport | 29 | Quartermaster on the Star Eater | Supposedly one of the good ones, but depends on whose asking. No man is so much a fool as not to have wit enough sometimes to be a knave; nor any so cunning a knave as not to have the weakness sometimes to play the fool.

“Seeing as our real world is pretty fantastical…. perhaps fish somewhere can fly.” She paused. “Well you know… the fun kind. Catching a stranger’s eye across the room. Hushed whispers. Nights out under the stars….”
Tumblr media
“Possibly even here. Who knows what goes on in the Wilde Wood, for I have only heard stories of all of the creatures that live in them,” he softly lifted his shoulders musing at the thought of ever running into creatures that he had only read about in stories he was convinced were fiction. Candoris had opened his mind up to believing that the things he had read in stories had always been true, it was just that most people were ignorant fools that chose to believe they never were. “I can assure you, there is plenty of time for you to do that. You said it yourself, what use do you have as the navigator on a ship that is not going anywhere?” He asked with a raised brow as he laughed softly at the obvious teasing he was partaking in.

Of course Oakley knew – it didn’t take a genius to come to that conclusion. This was her life, after all. It was a life that she sorely missed. The battling, the plundering, the endless risk that came with being a pirate. The cheap and quick thrill of taking the book with force had been enough to keep her happy for a small amount of time, but what of the rest of them? Of course, they knew that Mina was powerless against the border but that didn’t mean a mutiny of some sort wasn’t possible if things didn’t get moving quickly enough. She was lucky, she knew, to have Oakley and his unending loyalty. He who had stuck by her side from the moment they met in that bar in Tortuga, the night stormy and the drinks flowing and, beneath it all, kindling which would one day become the fire that burned between them now. To see his happiness, his fingers clutching that book with little intention of letting it go, it settled the storms in her heart. Mina had loved him from the moment she’d laid eyes on him though that realisation hadn’t dawned for quite some time. All she knew was that she would do anything for him, whether she follow him to the pits of the sea or steal a book from a greedy merchant. With a smirk, she tilted her head, her warm eyes adoring him. “Are you speaking to me or the book?”
Mina loved him most when he was reading. That was when it had hit her so long ago, watching him read by the light of the setting sun, perched on the Star Eater’s edge, his form cradled by the golden glow. Not that she had known what it meant when a pit opened up in her stomach or why her barren heart had swelled twice its size. Had she known then that she would pledge her life and loyalty to him always? Share her home with him, one day give him her name, bear him his child? One day when all of this war and violence was nothing but a shrinking shape upon the horizon and a momentary blip in their past? When she looked at him now, she was surer of nothing. “I’m not thanking you as your captain.” Her voice was a gentle thing, soft as a feather. It meant something that she could trust him with this job, speak to him as his partner, his equal. Mina clung to her power and to have handed it over with no fight was something rare. He was too good, too kind. She couldn’t see him sticking it for long anyway.
Her eyes fell shut, soaking in the small affection of his thumb brushing her skin, how desperately she had missed this. When Oakley fell into bed at night, both were exhausted. He from working all day and she from fighting the fever in her leg. For a while, Mina had barely remained conscious for more than a few hours and the captain had missed melting into Oakley’s arms at the end of a tiring day. “Just as I thought – traitorous bastards.” Mina chuckled, though she couldn’t deny it, he would never believe it just as she assumed he’d never believed that she would remain in bed once the infection had gone down. Didn’t she deserve a few adventures above deck anyway? She had taken this wound to the leg for them after all. She just grinned, leaned in close to gently kiss the tip of his nose. “I thought you’d never ask.” She murmured as she reached to take the hand cupping her cheek in her own, her fingers lacing easily through his. Gone were the pretenses that nothing was between them in front of the crew, the possibilities brought on by the wedding had made her realise just how short life was. “Lead the way. I demand just one evening with you. I think we’ve both earned it.”
Tumblr media
There was something within Oakley that felt warm, it was the same warmth he had always felt whenever he found himself in the company of Mina of course. It was the same thing that had drawn him to her that night in the tavern. Maybe he was always going to have an unfair advantage over the other members of the crew considering he had been there for such a long time with her. Oakley was one of the remaining original crew members that still sailed the seas with her. Not all of the others had ended up being forced off of the ship, some had died with honor in battle while others simply decided to hang up their titles and settle down. That wasn’t the life for Oakley and Mina. That much had been evident as they spent months now boarded and docked in a place. Sure, they could do it. But it wasn’t the reason their hearts beat so loudly. They were always supposed to be together and even more than that, they were always meant to be pirates fighting together at all hours of the day. It took him for a moment to respond to her, still so enamored with the book she had stolen for him. “You, obviously,” he spoke before shaking his head and blinking a few times.
Oakley could feel that subtle warmth now spread to his cheeks as Mina spoke to him again, smiling all the while as she clarified why she had been thanking him. “As my captain or not, I stand by what I said,” he spoke honestly, something he always had the privilege of doing with Mina. Perhaps it was their honest line of communication that made the relationship between them so strong. There were no secrets between them. They had laid themselves bare and knew that the other person had been doing the same for them all along. In fact, as Oakley had gone through the entire history of them, he couldn’t pinpoint a time where he hadn’t loved her. Not even a moment that he had doubted her decision or leadership. Through and through Oakley had found himself willing to follow her no matter the circumstance. Sure he would redirect her if she was doing anything too reckless, but being a good captain was something that Mina thrived at. There was nothing he was more sure of that she would lead a long and illustrious life as the captain of the Star Eater and it would be the utmost privilege to even be included in the same string of thoughts when the common folk thought of the ship. Mina Stoker, captain of the Star Eater accompanied by Oakley Davenport, her unwavering quartermaster who had given his life to her in a dimly lit and hazy tavern. To think it all started with a drink and the only courage he could muster up to try and impress her. If that Oakley had known just how far they would have come, how that singular moment would shape his life for the rest of it.
These moments that they shared had always been there, only now they could be more affectionate. Neither one of them would hold back the kind of love that they had for another. They had waited ten long years, no matter how in his head he had gotten at the wedding, it didn’t matter what the rest of the crew thought. Not that the crew had any issues with it, the relationship had been a slow burning fire and the crew had just been waiting for them to finally realize the sort of love they had for each other. “Once I fully settle into my position as the quartermaster again they will hear about this,” he joked knowing that it hadn’t been that serious of an offense. A soft hum was pressed against his lips as she kissed his nose. He tucked the book under his arm while Mina wove her fingers with his before they turned to find their way off of the ship. The crew would be able to handle a few hours alone without the pair of them on the ship. That was the beauty about the culture on the ship was that loyalty and family had always been built into it. Oakley needed nothing else but a reprieve from all of the work thoughts he had running through his mind to just spend a few blissful hours with Mina. “If the captain orders it, then I must follow it,” he grinned back at her. It felt nice to get back into the groove of things that they had been out of for so long. He only wanted this one moment with her before they had to focus again on the war that was developing more and more each day. “Maybe the beach?” he questioned, “we can find an alcove somewhere where we will not be bothered by anything except the lull of the ocean and the setting of the sun. I can read to you until night falls like a blanket over the sky, like old times.”

“Asking me not to think is like saying a fish should learn to fly.” She let out a sigh. “True, true. If you were a good navigator I’d be out of a job and Eliot would simply be lost without me.” Elle looked the other over. “Yeah, yeah. Perhaps I need to get up to a bit of mischief. Not enough to get me into trouble but enough to catch someone’s eye.”
Tumblr media
Oakley smiled briefly, “telling that to someone who has only ever been wrapped up in fiction is truly a terrible idea. I have read words that have convinced me that fish can fly. Anything is possible if you weave the right words into your story.” He shrugged apathetically. Oakley Davenport had always been the kind of person who had done everything in his power to attempt to be the author of his own story. While there were other forces at play that he would have no control over, there were things that he had. And his thoughts, as tumultuous as they had seemed from time to time, were something that he had perfected on having control over. “Mischief?” His brows rose at her comment. “What sorts of mischief so I know what to expect if you somehow manage to get yourself killed.”

Remy knew he could trust Oakley. He wanted to believe that so much, but if he did then he allowed room for disappointment. The what if doubts clouded his mind, but instead of dwelling on them, he reminded himself he would just have to keep working hard. Proving himself and his loyalty was the best way for him to stick around and work his way up, well, if he didn’t die trying. A small smile was on his face as he looked at the water, feeling more relaxed now than he had been the past couple of days. Oakley managed to do that somehow, to settle his anxiety and give him the reassurance he wouldn’t openly ask for.
It was only when the quartermaster brought a hand to the healing cut that he took a step back and felt his chest tighten with panic. “I didn’t.” Remy glanced at the other, but was quick to avert his gaze. “No, I’m fine. It’s nothing.” If anything, it just made him want to fight harder the next time. “Why would you think that?” His heart skipped as he thought of Zach, but he bit back the anger that usually followed. He was on the Star Eater with his crew, safe from the vampire. “I was training, you know? It happens.” The excuse wasn’t a strong one and he immediately felt guilty. There wasn’t a need to lie to someone he respected and Remy didn’t want to guess the punishment for doing so. He just didn’t want anyone to worry or think of him as someone who couldn’t take care of himself.
Tumblr media
Oakley was no stranger to someone keeping a secret for the sake of themselves, nor was he one to press any further on it in case it made them uncomfortable. Oakley had always cultivated good relationships with other members of the crew. It was his sole job as the quartermaster to deal with quarrels before they came to light. His hand of punishment was far less severe than what Mina’s would have been if she had found out about any of the drama between the shipmates. So long as the crew was tight knit and worked well together, Mina trusted that Oakley knew exactly what he was doing. However, Remy shying away from his gaze set off a few red flags in his mind.
“Do you know why Mina and I were not together the night of the wedding?” he asked, knowing that he would most likely not know the answer. But he trusted Remy, as he had trusted anyone he ever came in contact with. “It was because I went behind her back to make a deal with a vampire to swear to not hurt anyone on our ship,” he started to say. “I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t that vampire. Or if it was a vampire at all,” he looked back over the water thinking about how much that night could have been avoided if Oakley had been less proud. But he didn’t regret his decision, everyone on the crew was still alive. And in the back of his head, that was all that really mattered.
“Training?” He cocked his brow, pursing his lips in thought for a moment. “I will have to bring it up to Mina, but maybe we could start training more regularly,” he trailed off, adding yet another thing to the endless list he had as acting captain while Mina was on bed rest. “With the war ensuing, I assume it will only be smart for us to be prepared. Taking other pirate ships down, now that is easy. But as far as combat with creatures much stronger than us… That was proven more difficult as evident at the wedding. If you want, I can talk about it with the other crew members to see if that would be something they would be interested in. I do not foresee us leaving this kingdom anytime soon, so we should not have idle hands in the battle when it comes.”

“I feel like I’ve already done that half a dozen times today.” She muttered under her breath. “I suppose you’re right. I could bug my brother about it but I already make his life hell. And I’m sure that’s not entirely true… I heard you did an okay job before I came along.” She offered up before rolling her eyes. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say.”
Tumblr media
“Then take a break, rest your eyes and do not think about things for a moment,” he shrugged a little bit. There wasn’t really anything more that he could say than that. He would have given anything for even a moment of reprieve from the duties that had been bestowed upon him in Mina’s absence. “No,” he shot down. “I know nothing of charts or maps or... Weather patterns. Nor do I care to. I care about the people on this ship though, that’s what makes me a good quartermaster,” it had been the truth. It was the perfect position for him, and he was much more of a proactive one rather than the reactionary type. He liked to pride himself on the fact that he could quell situations far before they arose. And at this point he had been pretty sure in the ship that they wouldn’t let anything get too out of hand when he had to focus on other things. “Just don’t be so hard on yourself, yeah? We’re all stuck here and we’re all suffering.”

There were tears that wanted to come out. To rise out from her eyes and fall down her face. Vivi–Victoria–wasn’t sure if it was her, her own powers helping her out so she wouldn’t cry, suppressing her tears because she wasn’t sad. She wasn’t mad. She wasn’t even angry anymore. Victoria was lost. Her whole life all she felt was lost, no longer belonging to the sea but not apart of the land. And now she felt even more lost than ever. With her brother out there and various people knowing different parts of her… and Oakley now knowing everything. There was no path ahead of her that she could see, not one she could take with her feet or with her fins. She’s always been trapped, but now she was just stuck and what was the next thing she could do? Going back to normal was not an option because that would also be living in feigned ignorance. Denial, as tempting as it was, would just come to haunt her and hurt more.
Victoria heard his question and mumbled something quick, her mouth pressed against her legs. She could barely admit it to herself, much less speak it aloud. She already had said more than she ever intended to in her life and her mind was still grappling with everything that had happened, but his question was something she already had thought about. Why she was so lost in her thoughts when he arrived. “I’m not alone,” she said, a little louder this time. It was the truth, was it not. Henry was alive, and that pit inside of her thought she was alone in the world was growing smaller, but it was already small to begin with. Victoria was not alone. There were people in her life, good and bad, but there were people. Yona’s isolation of her was a fool’s dream and Vivi had friends. She had James and Mina. She had Oakley and Remy. Even Taika and Celine were amongst the people she could consider her friends, the people she’s found to be this weird replacement for the family and life she lost. No, not replacements, but a new makeshift group she could see herself calling her family. “I was never really alone, though, was I?”
The tension subsided, the pressure that she was only making for herself. The realization was enlightening, but it wasn’t lighting a course that she could take. Saying her true name and telling someone else did not magically open up a door where everything was going to be alright. Her parents were still dead and she ran away from her brother. There was still a scar on her back, a reminder of everything. Vivi could be Victoria Young again, but what were the true risks of it all. All she wanted was just freedom for herself and that was it, but would that mean coming clean to everyone? Vivi never lied. She just held back on the full truth, one which now Oakley knew. “Are you mad? Or rather… are you more curious?” she asked, looking over in his direction. He was closer now and there was no hiding her vulnerability anymore. “You are fond of stories. I-I can tell you mine. If you’re going to know, you might as well know the full truth.”
Tumblr media
Nothing in Oakley’s life could have prepared him for the conversation that he was having with Vivi now. Presumably, Mina had lost her family in the same sort of fashion. She had been scooped up by pirates when she was just a girl and her life was that ever since. Mina didn’t have any recollection of her life before then. She didn’t know the truths of her past nor did she ever really care to dwell on them for too long. But Vivi, Victoria Young, had been plagued with the memories of the life that she had to leave behind. She knew everything of her life before and she knew everything of her life after. How they were drastically different and how she was put in a position that made her completely hopeless and vulnerable. If he had gone through half of what she had, he was unsure he would have had the strength to carry on. To be ripped from his family, to live a new life that had been built on lies and deception. Of course, he had done that when he ran away to become a pirate, but his hand wasn’t forced. He chose that life for himself.
Hesitantly, he drew closer to her so that he was right next to her, sitting himself down on the sandy shore so he would stop looking down at her. He was trying hard to understand just exactly what she was going through. And although he had no real idea of it, he wanted to sympathize for her. To allow her to give him whatever she could in order to make everything make more sense to him. If there was anything that he wanted out of this whole interaction, it was just to get Vivi to be more comfortable with her truth. To be able to say it whenever she felt comfortable enough to say it to people. He understood that she didn’t chose to tell him, rather that he had just been there in the wrong moment. Just so long as he wasn’t forcing her hand. The last thing Oakley wanted to do was for her to tell him everything without actually wanting too. But he liked to believe in his time in Candoris that he had gained the girl’s trust. And he felt like he knew her, if this was something she really didn’t want to talk about, she would have swam away the moment he made himself known. It was the fact that she was still here that was giving him the indication that she had truly wanted him to be there. And all Oakley could offer was the chance to say it out loud rather than letting the thoughts bounce around her head for the entirety of her life.
“I would imagine if you were really alone you would not have made it this far,” he added after a moment of silence. “People may say they are alone and they may go through life believing it. But there are people who are there for you. Imagine how boring a story would be to tell without supporting characters. Not only boring, there would be no story to tell. No driving force that would carry you onto the next page. I remember telling you once that living a life of solitude was not a life worth living, I hope you realize that now,” he paused, stopping himself from continuing on with his words that were dangerously close to getting preachy.
They sat on the beach for another moment, that odd tension in the air seemed to be dissipating gradually before she spoke again. He took a moment to think clearly about his words. “Mad?” he questioned, brows furrowing at the insinuation that he could be that. “What would there be for me to be mad about? Curious, that’s a better word,” he nodded as he looked over at the mermaid— at his friend. There was a smile that graced his features, a warmth that came from within that was now exuding from his being. He was truly grateful that he had a found a friend in Vivi, but perhaps he was more grateful that she found a friend in him. “I would love nothing more,” he mused. “Only if you are comfortable and ready to tell it. If you want to save it for another day, I understand completely,” he tried to reassure her that it would be totally okay for her to not tell him everything in that moment. He knew that she had issues with trust, and now he understood them. Though Oakley truly believed that he had never given her a reason to not trust him. He had hoped that she knew that to be his truth. “Take your time, Victoria,” he placed his hand on her shoulder to offer some comfort, “I will always be here for you.”

She knew that he would come to her, she felt a great sense of achievement in finding this book for him. He had spoken of it once or twice, the great adventure story had stuck with her and Mina had decided that, one day, Oakley would have it. Mina had a determined soul, most who knew her knew of her resolve in getting things done, and the captain had spent much of her afternoon bartering with the book’s owner before taking matters into her own hands. She was a pirate, after all. She couldn’t lose her touch. “Found it.” He could bet on the fact that it was stolen from those words alone. Perhaps if the merchant hadn’t been so greedy, he would still have his pinky finger and the rarest book in his collection.
Finishing with her piece of rigging, Mina stood and allowed a deckhand to take over, leaning against the edge of her ship and nodding in reply to the members of the crew greeting their captain with smiles of surprise. “Must there be an occasion? Just a way of telling you I love you.” Mina had returned her attention to Oakley, how the sun seemed to glitter against his curls, how his eyes gleamed with the only reward she needed, that wholesome happiness. It warmed her solid little heart, loosened the hinges on her easy smile. The weight of her title was weighing Oakley down, she saw it every morning and night, had felt useless when her touch did little ease the stress. This meant something to him, that much she could see, that was more than enough for her.
“I want to say thank you. Not many pirates would do what you did with such grace. And loyalty.” He had stayed true to her, made it clear just how closely he had been watching her all these years. She felt pride through and through, felt she was stepping back in with no messes to clean up. Reaching out, she took his hand and pressed it to her cheek, her eyes closed. Weeks without intimacy had worn her out, without the affection that had been coming so easily to them ever since that first night together. She wasn’t a particularly needy creature, however, she had slowly begun to crave Oakley’s attention across the span of ten years. Without it, she had felt robbed. “I finally feel like myself again. I’ve got to say, I’ve missed me.”
Tumblr media
He couldn’t help the subtle roll of his eyes and the half scoff that followed. Mina didn’t even have to say how she truly got the book, he knew her methods better than anyone else on the ship. The pair of them had spent ten years of their lives plundering together. He was certain half of their joint book collection wasn’t because they had ever bought the books. They were pirates, stealing things is what they were good it. It was what they had prided themselves on as they set sail to the seven seas. This book in particular had been one that he had been searching for ever since he learned how to read. Oakley remembered clutching his tattered copy of The Three Musketeers by Alexandere Dumas, rereading that story over and over as if it was his own personal bible. It was in the first chapter that Oakley had read about Don Quixote. He always itched to know more about the man d’Artagnan had been compared to within those first few sentences and now he had it. Held it in his hands as it begged for him to consume every last word. “I love you,” he reminded her again, though his gaze was still upon the book.
There were things Mina had done for Oakley in this life that could never compare to what he had done for her. Sacrifices made by his captain just for the young boy. She had placed her trust in him the moment he came aboard the ship and told her of the mutiny he had heard all about. This. This simple act of Oakley taking care of her affairs for the past few weeks hardly deserved the gift she had given him. But he was still so thankful. The thought, the intention behind the gift proved that she had been paying attention to him all along. Every time he rambled about the stories he read or the books he still yearned to find. The smallest details about Oakley that anyone would miss if they turned their head for one moment. But not Mina, not his captain, not his soulmate. There was no doubt in his mind that she truly had loved him all along. “You never have to thank me. You are my captain. I would sail to the ends of the earth for you and back if that is what you commanded of me. Hell, I would even walk the plank if you demanded,” he grinned for a moment, “only because I know you would be moments behind me walking off the plank after me.”
Mina had taken his hand and placed it against her cheek, and Oakley absentmindedly rubbed his fingers against the apples of her cheeks while his eyes met hers. Though it had taken ten years, if an outsider had looked at them they would have thought they have only every knew each other. Their simple acts of affection toward one another spoke much louder than anything Oakley could ever conjure up to say. “I have missed you too, but you were not ever really gone. Do not think the crew did not tell me about your little adventures around the ship when you were supposed to be on bedrest,” he scolded her, but his tone was light and easy. He knew that Mina was far too proud to be bedridden for so long. Oakley knew better than anyone on the ship that she would not listen to those orders, just so long as the crew had been watching out for her when he had been dealing with everything for her. “But I did miss us,” he commented. “We only had us for a week before all of this happened. It will be nice to settle into a semblance of a routine again,” he gave her a gentle nod before planting a small kiss on her forehead. He looked around the ship for a moment. “Do you think we could sneak away for a little while? I want to read this with you. Before the day gets any darker.”

“I’m not sure I can take it any longer.” She mused with a groan. “What is the point of a navigator if we can’t even fucking go anywhere? On top of that there’s all this interspecies drama. Don’t even get me started on how fucked up things have been since that damned wedding.”

Oakley couldn’t help but softly chuckle at Ellie as she went on one of her rants. “Check up on the ship, I suppose,” he shrugged. “You are really asking the wrong person though. I think I hold the title for the ships worst navigator,” he grimaced at the memory of the time when he had to suffer through one voyage in the place of the navigator. He had always just been grateful that Mina pulled him up to quartermaster before he would lead them directly into the Bermuda Triangle. “We should have never docked here. I’m blaming you for that,” he teased softly. “As the quartermaster, your punishment is unfortunately all of ours too. Being trapped by these sealed borders. Remember when we leave to never come back to this godforsaken place again.”

The weeks had been long, but Mina had made a remarkably speedy recovery. And soon Oakley would be able to hang up his captain hat for a long time. It was one that he didn’t want by any means. If there any inkling for a captainship before, it had been squashed with how much responsibility it had. Of course, he was assuming the role as captain on top of the role of quartermaster that he was already responsible for. Commanding the ship and dealing with the punishments and interpersonal connections of everyone on board was like being the parent and the baby sitter at the same time. It made him appreciate his role all that more. And not that she needed any more praise or had to give any Oakley any more evidence, but it showed him that Mina really was the perfect captain.
He had spent most of the day preparing the ship to go out past the harbor on Mina’s demands. She wanted to make sure that the crew didn’t get into the habit of staying in one place for too long. Luckily, everyone on the ship was restless to do just about anything if it meant that they hadn’t had to be docked their entire stay. It was just something of a day trip, to feel the ocean rock the ship with its waves, to set sail once more. Though they couldn’t travel far, they could still enjoy the sea breeze against them for just a moment of solace.
Oakley was in the middle of talking to a rigger discussing what he should be doing when he felt the smallest of kisses pressed against his shoulder. Stumbling over his words for a moment, he dismissed the captain trying his best to hide how flustered he had just gotten. Turning to Mina he raised his brow as the package was handed to him. It felt heavy in his hands, but he knew exactly what it was when she had placed it in his hands. A small smile fought its way across his features as he looked down at the box for only a moment. He looked up to thank her but she had already excused herself.
Slipping his fingers in between the paper that had been folded together, he unraveled the book to reveal a book he had been looking for for quite sometime. One of the many on his list, Don Quixote. It was in near perfect condition, bound in leather and smelled of old parchment. He opened the book for a moment and flipped through the pages a little mindlessly. He felt a few tears start to form on the edge of his lids before walking back over to Mina. “Where did you find this?” he asked her, in a sort of disbelief that she had actually found it in Candoris of all places. She always had a knack for finding books he was always looking for. “Thank you,” he whispered before placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head. “What’s the occasion?” he asked before drawing his attention back to the detailing on the binding of the book.
Tumblr media
Mina was pleased with herself, for a devilish smile had crossed her lips as she ascended the steps to the Star Eater, a rectangular package in hand. Her day had taken her across the city, this newfound ability to take to her feet once more had the captain feeling young and sprightly in a way she hadn’t in quite some time. The wedding had taken it out of her, sapped her of her energy for so long that the feeling she had awoken with today had, truly, felt like a blessing.
The sight awaiting her made the stormy grey of her eyes come alight, her crew working away, whistling as they went, jeering and jiving. A living and breathing family at her fingertips. At the centre of it was Oakley, commanding in a way that made her heart swell with pride. No jealousy, no worries hidden behind her eyes as she watched him do her job for what she hoped would be the last time. Maybe she was growing as a person, or maybe she simply loved him.
She bounced over to him, pressed a kiss to his shoulder and wordlessly placed the package into his hands. It was heavy, an old leatherbound book whose title she remembered from a life long ago. It was rare that Oakley got new books, it was a tough find, seeking out something he’d not yet read. This one, she knew he didn’t have it in his personal collection, and she certainly knew he hadn’t read it seeing as she’d spent countless years watching him with starry eyes as he rambled on and on about literature. He’d always been her story, her beginning, middle, and end. With a grin, she left him to open up his gift and wandered off to the edge of the ship to assist in some rope tying.

Oakley’s eyes got wide as Mina hiked up her nightgown to reveal that that festering infection had been gone. As if someone overnight had a slab of marble and carved out every imperfection of the pair of them. They held qualities of beings far superior than the mortals that they were. Oakley knew there was magic in this world, but if any part of him had been a sceptic it had been washed away. But had this been the work of good magic or dark magic? There was no part of him that could really tell in these moments since he was being bombarded with new feelings and sensations that no mortal would ever be able to feel. His eyes thinned for a moment as he looked at her. “Good,” he finally said with the slightest nod of his head. “And you are mine,” Oakley responded to her with the most genuine smile. “Forever.”
It had been one of the nicest days that Candoris had seen in their whole time here only further convincing him that it was all a dream. How had they become these perfect beings on this perfect day with not a cloud in sight? Those thoughts were pushed to the back of his mind because it had been three long weeks without the company of Mina and he needed to have her again. To kiss her and to love her. There was no knowing how long these effects would be taking place, so they might as well fully enjoy their newfound beings to the fullest of extent. How could he care about all of the why this had come to be scenarios when he could just be with Mina on this picturesque day.
The moment the wind had picked up and tossed Mina over the side of the boat, it took Oakley by surprise. There was an unsettling feeling in his gut that it was only because of him that she had ended up in the water. He called out for her name peering over the railings of the ship. When she hadn’t come up from the water, the panic rushed over him again. Silently cursing to himself, he climbed over the railing of the ship and dove overboard after her. Oakley had almost made it to the water before his wings started flapping, halting his downward ascension so that he was now flying. He looked down at Mina as she broke through the water, screaming his name in a panic. There was something strange in the way that she had reacted, like she had never been in the water before. “I can’t come down,” he looked back up at his wings that had been such a contrast to the pale blue the sky was now. Tried as he might, he did not have control over his wings in any sense of the word. “Are you hurt, what’s wrong?” he called out to her from above. He would have given anything to not be floating above her in this moment. To be down in the water. “Is it your leg? Is it hurting you?” There was panic in his voice, but you could hardly hear him due to the winds that had become much more than a breeze as he looked down below.
Tumblr media
Mina floundered a few moments before catching hold of herself, keeping herself afloat with her arms and tail. It all made sense now, that call of the ocean, how she felt as though she was floating on her own two feet. How she had hungered for Oakley, wishing to inhale him aboard that ship only moments ago. It was like the ocean had awoken her from a dream and plunged her, instead, into a nightmare. Now, she almost forgot about Oakley up above, his desperate attempts to get down to her ignored by a woman fumbling to get a grip on just what in the world was happening to her.
She dipped back beneath the water, marveled at the fact that she could see, that she could breathe. She reached down to run her fingertips across her tail and recoiled at that feeling she couldn’t find a word for. When she broke the surface again, Mina’s horrified gaze met that of Oakley’s, panicked as she had been moments ago. “It appears the problem is that my legs are gone.” She called above the crashing sound of the ocean and their confusion. “I am a mermaid, Oakley!” Mina looked up at him, how his wings seemed to run into a cement wall on their way down to her. He was never going to get to her, she could see that. “I’m going ashore… I’m going to fix this.”

While Remy was tired of feeling guilty for some of his actions, he worried that the day it would fade away would be the day the rest of his morals left. He was sometimes troubled with the thought that this lifestyle had changed him, but perhaps this was who he had been all along and it had taken harsh circumstances to bring that to light. Though still restricted to Candoris, Remy was discovering things about himself that left him surprised, but proud. He couldn’t have asked for two better people to look up to than Oakley and Mina. There was still so much to learn from them both. Listening to the quartermaster reminded Remy how much the Star Eater was indeed home. It was a newer one for him, but had been home for years for some of the crew.
He couldn’t help smiling as well when Oakley mentioned their captain, though for other obvious reasons he wouldn’t bring up. Jeremy’s chest swelled with so much emotion, he bit back any soft smile and looked to the water because his eyes would surely give him away. Sometimes he thought that if he could hide what he felt, even as good as it was to hear this, he thought it would lessen ever being hurt again. “I want to stay. I’m going to, for as long as you’ll have me.” He finally said. Here he felt he finally belonged, even in ways he hadn’t when he lived life as a commoner with his parents. There was worry that lingered at the back of his mind that the Star Eater was too good to be true, that he could end up homeless again. It made him all the more eager to sail away from here. He wanted to ask about the family Oakley was born into, but held back. “It does feel right. I was looking for a way out…and a way to become stronger. I never thought it’d be this. Now it’s all that I see.” He couldn’t picture himself turning to something different and wondered if he would have found himself embracing such a lifestyle if his parents had lived. Remy wanted to move forward, even if there was one person–vampire–that made it difficult to forget where he came from.

Oakley reached out his hand to place it upon Remy’s shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze of reassurance. As far as he knew, Mina had every intention on garnering Remy’s talents and growing him to be a part of the family she had created. They always had open arms to anyone who was lost looking for a home, a place to call their own during times of their life when it seemed like there was nothing left. He knew better than anyone just how loyal the captain would be if you returned the loyalty to her. She was fierce and intimidating to outsiders, but the crew knew a different Mina. Knew that they would always have food and shelter under her command. It was easy to follow her, and with each new person aboard the ship, she proved it time and time again that she would really do anything for her crew. “We’ll have you for a long time, Remy. I can promise you that much.”
He looked over back to Remy as he spoke and couldn’t help but notice a small scratch along his cheek. Oakley brought his hand up impulsively to touch it, “I thought you said that you didn’t get hurt at the wedding,” shaming himself for only just now seeing the slice that followed the curve of his cheek. “Did you let Vivi take a look at this?” he asked wanting nothing more than to just ease him of his pain. It was another reason that he couldn’t be fit to be a captain. The amount of the crew that had been hurt already took a heavy toll on him, but if he had made a decision about the crew that got them hurt, he could never forgive himself. He thought back to the agreement that he had made with Mercy and how easily it could have been broken. But he was still alive here with him. “Did a vampire do this to you?” he asked, brows furrowing together. The question burned in his mind as he looked at the cabin boy for answers.

It had been hazy in his mind when he woke up that morning. His head still pounding from the drinks he had the night before. Oakley had woken up with Mina, tangled in their sheets together, which didn’t make a ton of sense to him considering she was still very hurt, but maybe that’s all that had happened. He had been having restless sleeps as of late. He left Mina’s cabin and made his way over to his that had been collecting dust ever since he and Mina had been together. Oakley had been in there for maybe a few minutes before he heard the pounding on his door. He opened it to a frantic Eli and couldn’t help but chuckle at how he had been reacting. “Eli, seriously calm down. It’s probably just the wind,” he suggested before moving past him silently agreeing to check out the noise anyways. “Tell me what you heard? Did it sound heavy or like someone is trying to sneak on?”

eli could’ve sworn he heard foreign footsteps on deck. he knew the footsteps of all his fellow crew members, including his orion and this wasn’t someone he recognised. but they sounded small, very light footsteps. now usually eli would’ve just ran after them but this… just seemed like something different, more menacing. so he slid around and into where the quartermaster’s dorms were and knocked. ‘oakley! come out. it’s important. i hear someone… i don’t know who. come check it out with me. might need back up.’

OAKLEY DAVENPORT // MUGGLE BORN
HOUSE: Gryffindor
"You might belong in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart, their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart"
( + / - ) brave, chivalrous, courageous, daring, athletic.
WAND: 14 1/4″ pear wood with a dragon heartstring core and quite flexible flexibility
PEAR WOOD; “This golden-toned wood produces wands of splendid magical powers, which give of their best in the hands of the warm-hearted, the generous and the wise. Possessors of pear wands are, in my experience, usually popular and well-respected. I do not know of a single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard. Pear wands are among the most resilient, and I have often observed that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use.” — Garrick Ollivander
DRAGON HEARTSTRING CORE; “As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.” — Garrick Ollivander
14 ¼ INCHES; “Most wands will be in the range of between nine and fourteen inches. While I have sold extremely short wands (eight inches and under) and very long wands (over fifteen inches), these are exceptionally rare. In the latter case, a physical peculiarity demanded the excessive wand length. However, abnormally short wands usually select those in whose character something is lacking, rather than because they are physically undersized (many small witches and wizards are chosen by longer wands).” — Garrick Ollivander
QUITE FLEXIBLE FLEXIBILITY *wand is a bit temperamental, though proven loyal to Oakley due to his resilience; “Wand flexibility or rigidity denotes the degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair - although, again, this factor ought not to be considered separately from the wand wood, core and length, nor of the owner’s life experience and style of magic, all of which will combine to make the wand in question unique.” — Garrick Ollivander
PATRONUS: Fox
“Associated with cunning, the fox has a place in many ancient cultures’ folklore. Foxes are sometimes thought to be tricksters, leading the unsuspecting down a path of demise. The calculating fox can outwit its enemies with strategy and adaptability.”
Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Oakley Davenport.
