Basically, Youtube as we know it is in deep trouble.

COPPA’s new law basically makes it so that every single video and channel needs to be listed as whether it is kid friendly or not. If your channel is kid friendly, you will not be recommended on Youtube, you will not be able to have personalised ads, you will not be able to have any ad revenue of any kind. 

So this seems easy? Just list your videos and channel as mature content that’s for 18+? WRONG! Somehow (not sure how yet, not even they are sure how this will happen) COPPA and the FTC will search for anything in your content that is deemed ‘kid friendly’. If you read their definition of what is deemed as kid friendly (basically: anything colourful, any ‘kid words’ like “cool” “awesome” or “whatever”, anything cartoony (animation falls into that topic no matter what)), you will realise that this is VERY vague and can and WILL cause problems when this is implemented. Not only that; if you are found out to have kid friendly content that isn’t marked as such, you will be fined up to $42,000. Obviously, for smaller Youtubers, this is a very big problem that could end their youtube career in a heartbeat. 

This is all being done as action to protect children’s viewing limits online as well as protect data that’s used in the child’s activity online. (In my mind this is basically saying: parents have defaulted to pushing a screen into their child’s face to shut them up so much so, that now everything posted online is deemed a threat to children, and instead of parents bettering themselves, they’re asking the government to babysit for them.) This was something that has been coming for a long while and previous attempts to protect children’s activities online have been put in place, but now COPPA have had enough and are putting this not only into Youtube policies, but into LAW. But all of this is being made under enormous misunderstandings of how internet culture works. I’m sure you can think of so many content creators on Youtube that ride the line between being kid friendly and mature content; now it’s so precise that someone who has colourful lighting in their web cam set up are now deemed ‘kid friendly’, even if they’re saying “fuck” uncensored out loud.  What makes it worse is Youtube’s attempts to make videos kid friendly since its demonetisation policies started will most likely still be in place: WHICH CONTRADICTS THE COPPA LAW. Any videos a Youtuber has done to monetise their videos (cut out swearing, not done copyrighted or mature content activities) will now fall into COPPA’s ‘kid friendly’ laws. So now we’re having to shift from being monetisation friendly to make money, to being as adult and not-kid friendly as possible in order to get money, but you’ll still get demonetised by Youtube. Creators will have to decided whether to get fucked by COPPA or Youtube’s old system. 

This is a law that needs to be refined and altered. Otherwise this could be the end of Youtube. And this may not stop at Youtube… 

But what’s important to highlight here is this is NOT something to 100% blame Youtube over. They were fucked by COPPA and the FTC: BLAME COPPA AND THE FTC OVER THIS, NOT YOUTUBE. 

in the link you can comment on the policy. Please comment on it and outline that this policy is hugely vague and can either damage Youtube content creators and Youtube as a platform, or will be abused and will not work in the end. This needs to be either gotten rid of or fixed, FAST.

i got bored so i thought i’d share some art tips ‘cause why not!!

- start with a sketch. seriously no artist i’ve ever met starts a drawing with lineart

- construction lines like boxes and circles are a godsend and the more you use them the more you’re able to make different body types that are proportional. eventually you’ll be using them less and less as you commit different body types to memory

- study some realism first because it’s a good way to build skills in lighting and proportions. this doesn’t mean you can only draw realism obviously, but having that knowledge does help for future reference

- anime is a valid style and fuck anyone who says otherwise

- originality is a myth. take ideas and inspiration from other artists, movies, whatever and build your own style from that. it’s gonna take time but it’ll come i promise

- use references if you don’t know how to draw something. as long as you don’t trace it or claim it as your own, you are totally valid if you look at other poses online for how to draw something. if it’s heavily referenced just mention + credit where you got the pose from

- don’t be afraid to ask artists for tips and tricks. personally whenever someone asks me about brushes n stuff i get super excited and am like “yes here and here and here” and i’m p sure other artists feel the same

- flip!!! your canvas!!!!! you’ll hate it at first but it really does make your drawings 1000x better i promise

- try not to shade too much with black ‘cause it looks muddy. there are some exceptions, like light diffusion and differences in lighting, but if the object is colorful or around something colorful try to shade in a darker color similar to that one

- don’t be like @staff. learn basic color theory

- watch!! tutorials!! and speedpaints!!

- color dodge is so good for glowing. seriously. those glowy effects i use? all color dodge. it highlights the saturated colors while casting the rest in shadow

- overlay is your best friend

- use multiply for shading if you’re not sure what colors to use

- use many many layers, there is nothing worse than doing something wrong and messing up the whole thing trying to fix it because you don’t have a different layer for it

- draw what you want. no rush. no pain. it’s for you. it doesn’t have to be perfect

- practice practice practice!!! drawing is a skill, anyone can learn. y’all should see my drawings three years ago. it’s all practice.

- there’s this weird culture around filling up your sketchbook with only clean drawings and stuff which is, uh. bullshit. your sketchbooks can have whatever mess you want. that’s why it’s called a sketchbook and not a masterpiece book. do whatever you want

- don’t feel discouraged if your art doesn’t get as much attention. time zones + filters + a lot of things may be a factor and it doesn’t mean you’re not good

- don’t compare yourself to other artists unless you’re looking to learn from them because everyone’s style and level is different and you won’t get anywhere if you feel bad because you think you’re “not good enough”

- “not good enough” is also bullshit btw, art is fluid and creative and the standard is whatever you want it to be

- ignore cringe culture that should be abolished immediately anyways

- you don’t owe anyone anything. you do you.

- if someone tells you you can’t draw something, that’s a perfect motivation to draw lots of that thing to spite them

- drawing is supposed to be fun. if it’s super stressful for you, it’s okay to take a break

- experiment!!! there’s so much you can do for art, don’t be afraid to try new things!!

- ily you’re valid

- keep drawing, i believe in you

If you're a creator and you needed to hear this today:

You have no idea how many people lurk on your work. No idea how many times people go back to revisit your work. How big they smile when they simply think about your work. How fast their heart beats, how excited they get when they see that you posted something.

People are shy with their feedback. Sometimes it’s because they’re simply shy. Other times it’s because they assume you already know how great and talented you are. Could be both.

My point is, even if you barely have any likes or reblogs, don’t get discouraged. You have a lot of silent fans, but they are still your fans. Keep on creating. Because there is always someone out there who will love what you have made.

pick-me-ups for writers

for the self-conscious beginner: No one makes great things until the world intimately knows their mediocrity. Don’t think of your writing as terrible; think of it as preparing to contribute something great.

for the self-conscious late bloomer: Look at old writing as how far you’ve come. You can’t get to where you are today without covering all that past ground. For that, be proud.

for the perfectionist: Think about how much you complain about things you love—the mistakes and retcons in all your favorite series—and how you still love them anyway. Give yourself that same space.

for the realist: There will be people who hate your story even if it’s considered a classic. But there will be people who love your story, even if it is strange and unpopular.

for the fanfic writer: Your work isn’t lesser for not following canon. When you write, you’ve created a new work on its own. It can be, but does not have to be, limited by the source material. Canon is not the end-all, be-all. 

for the writer’s blocked: It doesn’t need to be perfect. Sometimes you have to move on and commit a few writing sins if it means you can create better things out of it.

for the lost: You started writing for a reason; remember that reason. It’s ok to move on. You are more than your writing. It will be here if you want to come back.
