"God never gives you more than you can handle" is survivorship bias. People who got more than they could handle are dead.

I really should be sleeping right now, but speaking of space politics, the conditions of living in space should, in theory favor communitarian, very state-based societies. When I say "communitarian" I don't precisely mean "communist" or even egalitarian communities, I mean societies where there is a very, very strong pull towards managing resources and following "rules".
Why? Very simple: if you don't, EVERYBODY DIES. Unlike the many libertarian science-fiction authors would like to believe, you can't just say "get out of my property" in space, because you share the same resources, down to the air, with everybody else, and there are very complex, very delicate machinery that needs to be taken care of. As well as if you skirt on your duty, like say, not reporting an air leak, you're endangering everyone. So this promotes a very communal way of living, very similar to discipline in ships or other such spaces, though of course space communities designed for long term living would probably be more relaxed than a navy ship.
I don't think this would result in a dystopia unlike many pessimistic writers. A society that is able to fully explore space would probably enjoy a wide distribution of resources (and in my optimistic opinion, be socialist or communist), and space exploration is also that cannot be done without the cooperation of many, many people. So instead of nightmare dystopias, I'm thinking more to the cooperative side.
On the other hand, assuming that space habitats are as easy to build as buildings right now on Earth, anyone could build their own self-suficient habitat and just fly to another orbit, presumably not alone but with collections of other like-minded habitat. I think these habitat "constellations" might be one of the main examples of political units in the future, I talked about it on my worldbuilding space empires post.

anyways the problem with extraplanetary colonies isnt some vague concerns about defiling the pristine universe, its that a number of forces conspire to guarantee that they will have some of the most horrific working conditions humanity has ever seen
