⚠️ The rarely sighted female blanket octopuses can grow to six feet and has long flowing sheets of iridescent flesh trailing behind her.
The graceful cape of the blanket octopus helps her appear much bigger & intimidating to potential predators as she spends her entire live cycle swimming in the open ocean!
In situations of distress, she can break off portions of her cape to make a faster getaway.
Scientists have observed the blanket octopus ripping the highly venomous, whip-like tentacles off of the man o’ war jellyfish and using them as a defense to stun their predators & prey.
It’s incredibly uncommon to see the blanket octopus in the wild! enjoy nation & tag a friend below!

Look closely at the photo above and you might spot a little cephalopod among the many invertebrates of Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary!
Cordell Bank is a deep-water feature located along the cold California Current. Each year, the current brings in nutrient-rich water, which supports a rich biological community of fishes, invertebrates, and more. What else can you see in this photo?
I think part of the reason that I love cephalopods, especially octopodes and cuttlefish, is that they’re smart. So if you ever see one irl and look at it for a while thinking “what the fuck are you?” there’s a fairly good chance it is also looking at you and thinking whatever its equivalent of “what the fuck are you?” is
And that’s important to me.
