if you're gonna get into star trek you gotta understand that YES when it works it's some of the best anything ever put to television. but you gotta understand. it absolutely does not always work. you cannot truly love star trek unless you accept the fact that while more than half of the episodes are good, a not-insignificant portion of trek episodes -- especially from the most widely-beloved classic series -- are actually dogshit and terrible. and I would recommend that you love those episodes too

We talk a lot about how it's painful to see Bashir go from this happy talkative new CMO to a more battle scarred and sullen, quiet human being- and it is really painful and the show could have handled it in a better way- but I also want to say that our Bashir IS still in there. Like we don't have to wonder about that. Bashir's taken a lot of psychological hits, but he hasn't been so warped that's he's unrecognizable. He still plays his holodeck games with O'Brien. Garak still calls him an optimist, in the very same episode that Bashir rejects Section 31. He's still the kind healer that we know and love. He never goes in for that "greater good" rhetoric that cost a lot of people, like Garak, their souls. He never stopped believing in the individual value of people's lives.

nobody is doing it like benjamin sisko. he manages a space airport. he's the unwilling jesus of a different species. he has bribery, murder and tricking a species into joining a war on his conscience. he's a good cook and an even better dad. he's obsessed with baseball, a sport which by this point in canon has been dead for like 200 years. he defeated q in a boxing match. he even threw the tribble that landed on kirk's head
