[ ooc ] Trying to get back into writing after the mess that's been the last few months. This also ticks of one of... three? boxes for little word vomits for Aphel world/character building
words : 972
The door started to open, a strained shuddering as it peeled back a comical few inches before getting stuck. Its inaction was promptly met with a solid kick on the lower half, the sound reverberating into the room as the entryway opened the rest of the way with a hiss. Though an inevitability given the jerry rigged nature of the thing- originally a gate from the interior of an abandoned ship that’d been deconstructed, divvied up and haphazardly rebuilt to be embedded in one of the dark offshoot tunnels as a means of privacy- the frustration that came with the absolute jank of the thing was undeniable. ‘I’ll work out the kinks later’ a thought already being dismissed for the umpteenth time since the installation and immediate realization of the minor inconvenience. Dust and silt freshly bothered by the movement drifted about, making a soft haze as they caught the dim light from the scattered about bulbs and screens.
Making their way to the back of the room towards an organized disaster of a work table with heavy, lax steps, the mechanic greets it with the thump and clatter of a crate on its surface. Gloved hands greedily plunge into the box, pushing about various bits and scraps of tech and metal with enthusiasm before grasping and pulling out petal like chunk fiber glass and metal. Not even a true third of what it was originally was, and barely even identifiable as that. A ‘Home-Use Object Finder’- again, part of- the thing itself was essentially a smart device, a little floating AI meant to assist in locating objects the user requests assistance in finding… Not a wholly terrible concept, that is, if it weren’t for the company behind it and the predatory tactics built into it as a result. Thankfully, it wasn’t needed for the sake of its commercial function, just for what could be torn out of it.
Rolling a stool across the stone floor with one hand, grabbing various tools with the other on the fly-by before sitting down in front of the thing, it wasn’t long before they had begun busying themselves with the thing. With the partially melted outer shell carefully pried away exposing the first in a sandwich of damaged and fried circuitry, promptly eliciting a mumbled strand of obscenities and grievances as less care was put in cracking it open. At least everything was familiar, the mechanic’s tension easing further as they realized the worst of it was only on the outside, silent despair turning into glee at the innermost core. A little cylindrical thing, almost painfully mundane compared to everything that surrounds it, but only at a glance. In reality, it was one of three sensors that was used in the original bot for scanning and identifying objects- one of its eyes, if you will… and that eye was the last one that they needed for their little project sitting patiently on the desk next to them. Delicate once more, they extracted that little optics hub, pushing themselves and their seat in front of their true work with a solid kick.
Almost gently, as if it were sentient they opened it up, specific little panels being designed to open after being pressed just for that kind caution. Unlike the IPC’s design, this little one was neat and tidy in the presentation of its inner mechanisms, the specific segments of its internals all being accessible, relying on the higher quality outer materials for protection rather than the more easily repairable tech. Slotting the final addition into the space made just for it, taking extra care in checking alignments and soldering wires they close the paneling. Setting down their tools and ghosting a hand over one of the displays they pause, letting out a breath they’d been holding a bit too long, finger hovering over a button just a moment longer before finally pressing it. An agonizing few seconds of nothing.. and then the flickering of visuals, of them and the cluttered one-room workshop and the feedback was clear, almost stable, the only exceptions being sporadic stutters in the feed.
“Oh, Aeons, you really made me work for that that hard now didn’t you, you little-” Cutting themselves off they picked the thing up, cradling it to their chest as they spun themselves in their seat, letting out a breathy chuckle of triumph and relief. “Ah, whatever, you're workin' now… So I can’t get too mad at you now, can I?”
Setting it back on the desk with an all too pleased smile on their face they drag one of the holographic screens close, it becoming a keyboard in the shift as they went through updating logs and checking data as it processed. Eyes flickering over the quickly passing lines of text, making sure there was nothing glaringly wrong they hummed. Three months too long in the making, they thought, but the woes of being on a radioactive wasteland planet more often than not include stolen or salvaged IPC goodies not being readily available, so with all things considered.. not terrible. But that was the final step of the technological aspect of everything, leaving the most unnecessary yet best step for last: naming the thing. It’s a bot, one with a purpose in mind, so that means it should have a name that’s an acronym for something, surely. Vowels were easy, ‘engineering’ and ‘assistant’ almost immediately came to mind, but they’d need to be in that order… and ‘E.A’ is a bit ridiculous. Even more ridiculous would be having the first letter be ‘B’, making the acronym ‘B.E.A’. What would that ‘B’ stand for? They let out a soft snort as they came to their conclusion. Bitsy. It worked- the bot is quite small compared to them, only really the size of their hand, give or take.

Aphelion let out a short hum paired with a small shrug in turn. "Bein' fascinated doesn't immediately make you change your course." They pause, tongue puffing out the side of their cheek. ".. Sometimes it feels like it's hard to tell if you're even on a path or if you're too mixed in it all to know what's more important than what to you." There was a notable quietness to their tone as they finished their thought, something said more to themself rather than a response to the other. Not giving it anymore attention their focus returns back to Ahanon.
"Does takin' notes an' the like include makin' little drawin's an' sketches of 'em- life drawin', right? Or is that just for drawin' people.. Nevermind that I'll probably forget if I get told there's somethin' different. Anyway, I saw that there is one more exhibit hall." Bringing their hands up with a soft clap, they give the room one last scan before taking a few steps back out towards the main hall. The acknowledgement of the last room made their enthusiasm for it bubble over with the way a grin plastered on their face scrunching their features.
"Not to be biased but I think it's me savin' the best for last. All those little bots and what looked like some nicely kept old age cars. Shame the entire upstairs is roped off, kind of makes me think about what'll get put up there.. Maybe if I take too long comin' back round this side of the stars I'll end up findin' out you got a whole gallery of your own set up there, hm?"
The mechanic stood out like a sore thumb in the city square, not by appearance- their outfit seeming relatively tame in it's simple muted browns and utility gear- rather there was a noticeably awkward way in which they were carrying themself. A slightly furrowed brow pair with arms folded tightly across their chest as their gaze jumped from one focus to the next. Suddenly, they found themself staring at the brightly dressed Fool, seeming to zone out in thought before their posture ever so slightly untensed, moving their way over with a small nod in greeting.
"Ah, pardon me, if you wouldn't mind.." They began, the closer proximity making point of the fact it seemed they were seeming to look next to Ahanon rather than making eye contact. "I'm not from around here- figured since it'd be nice to see other perspectives and takes to machinery.. but! The, uh, Neverwinter Workshop- believe that's the name, right?- is all locked up tight and closed for the day and there's a few too many options for what I could do instead."
There's an awkward silence left in the way they seemed to have dropped off in their words, that slightly off stare lingering before their eyes light up with realization.
"Right, wait, yeah. The reason I wanted to ask you is because your choice of dress makes you stand in a real fascinatin' sort of way compared to most other folk I've seen here, but with a sort of relaxed manner that makes you seem like you've got a pretty good grasp of everythin' going on. So I would like to ask you what your preferred places to take a nice little look-see, or things of that sort of nature." They trail off with a quiet and airy laugh, head turning away slightly.

'Hair holds memories' — an interesting concept, really. That something that should be so trivial in the grand scheme of their life could be a constant reminder, a tether, binding them to their past. Yet, as they stood there, discarded locks of copper a scattered mess at their feet, they couldn't deny that the weight that lifted off them in that moment extended beyond physical.

"I might just need to look into gettin' one made to take back with me if that's the case.. and that's right. Guess drawin' does count as a hobby too." They snap their fingers, pointing at Ahanon as they clicked their tongue. "Forgot about that part when you mentioned it at that paintin' of the mountain with that.. awful mess of a name I'm not even goin' to pretend I remember."
Trailing off with a chuckle they stand upright, head tilting to the side. "Studyin' the stars, hm? In what kind of way? Scientific an' all that is the most common but I also know there's the sort of people that take some sort of spirituality into account, goin' all 'the stars predetermine the kind of person you are based on where they were when you were born' an' the like." In spite of the phrasing of their words, they carry a hint of genuine curiosity as they probe. "Not sayin' one makes me think more highly of someone than the other, just learned about the latter recently an' I think the idea of it is.. Well, I mean, I don't really get it but other people findin' it interestin' has me findin' it kind of curious too."

They blink at the man.
".. 'Cutie?'" Aphelion wasn't sure whether to deem the way the man spoke the endearment term as something good-natured or condescending. "You're askin' like you don't stick out like a sore thumb in this kind of joint.. Would damn near say you're a bit allergic to the general vibe an' attire." The last sentence came out with a hint of amusement, a hand slightly raised to gesture in reference to the man's clothing. If the person in front of them weren't mostly made of metal the outfit would likely look even more obscene. They then raise their other hand, waving both a small bit in dismissal of their previous statement as they continued.
"But genuinely speakin' I was more so doin' a little bit of gawkin' and ponderin' over you rather than your clothes or demeanor or anythin'. Like all that?" They lean forward a tad, eyes lighting up as they spoke. "Aeons that's real fancy type of tech. I've seen more than a few people with a couple limbs replaced with prosthetics but this? With as articulate and fluid as you seem to be movin' about? Doesn't seem to be a single ounce of dissonance between you an' all of it."
| @bxxth1ll ◆ They hadn't noticed the glance being sent back in their direction from the man, but when he angled his head and spat at the ground? Now that snapped them out of it. An incredulous laugh escaped from them over the man's action, expression untensing to give way for surprise. Adjusting the way they're seated, bringing a leg up over the other they turned their head slightly away from the cowboy, more oriented towards the majority. Another shift, leaning into their arm propped against the armrest, chin resting against their hand, trying to find more interest in the horde rather than the one person keen on staying a pace back from it.
.. Yet Aphelion continued to sneak a few glances at the man now that they were pulled out of their internal debate. Is it rude to stare? Obviously, yes, of course they knew that. But out of the options of staring every once in a while or being all sorts of blunt and going up to ask questions the former seemed much more feasible. Especially now that they were perceiving the way the man's brow was ever so slightly creased when they hadn't registered that detail in the beginning. It hadn't even dawned on them that they could've been the reason he seemed annoyed, thinking that the wait was probably the more likely thing to be getting to him. Yet. And then they found themselves caught in a brief moment of 'but what if'. They let it simmer a moment, another shift back into a more proper posture. Ignoring their nerves for the sake of intrigue and intentionally adjusting to face the direction of the man again, albeit a bit sheepishly, they made a small gesture towards the empty portion of the couch next to them. After doing so they then had both their hands retreat into their lap, fingers laced together over where their mask was still resting as they quickly looked away once more.

“Oh, lucky me.”, rolled off his tongue easily. He had no doubts he'd find the requested person easily enough. For two possible targets. He could only feasibly sell one unless someone blessed his hand. But to gain that certain boon he would first have to listen to more of what the somewhat hermit had to say.
Regard a person as a person, ah got it. His mistake in trying to be vague. So, a desired personal aspect then. He could regard both of them closer easily, even though he only knew details of one of them – the one with human skin, ironically.
“For what it's worth. I meant no offence. I know, words can do little to prove my honesty.”, and then he was greeted with a possibility to prove how honest he was willing to be. So he shows both his hands, the gilded and the plain one in a vague show of surrender.
“I meant it.”, he whispered, eyes downcast. “Someone I know needs help. Someone who might be of value to me later.”, he conceded. “It is an egoistic request. But both of them are broken and only one can possibly be fixed in time.”, or not. He was aware that may neither of the two options could be fixed in time but maybe he could entice the mechanic with knowledge. “So, one of them, is an IPC employee in the vaguest sense. His family is connected to the corporation, yet he lived an agonizingly long time on the same planet I hail from. He'd prefer to be named Hyena, and he looks human but under the skin, he is mostly machine.”, he pauses. “now the galaxy hunter, he is the same, but he lost the human skin to.”, both of them might be able to save him if it came to it, yet they're likely to fight
“So if one of them fitting the description ever strands on your door? Help them, will you. I'll make sure you get your coin”
Aphelion's brow knotted, bottom lip being pulled at between their teeth as they mulled over the IPC member's words. "A matter of life an' death rather than anythin' easy an' you're makin' pick an' choose.. guessin' you've got a preference based on what you're tellin' me about who an' there isn't anyway of goin' 'why not both?'" The mechanic let out a wry chuckle, gaze hitting the floor as they continued. "A cog wedged deep in the IPC machine or a vigilante.. but with what you're sayin' it sounds like you know with certainty this 'Hyena' has a family they'd get to go back to.." They fell silent again. The way the man had first laid out the scenario seemed like it'd just be one person needing help. Not this. Surely the IPC is capable of handling one while they helped the other. Surely.
".. It'd have to be the former of the two, since it'd feel like I'm inadvertently gettin' blood on my hands either way.. allegiances aren't even somethin' to take into account with this. 'Specially when I'm not too fond of havin' the guaranteed image of people buryin' their kid over my choices." Drumming their fingers against their arm they hiss out an obscenity in frustration. "Yeah.. Yeah I'd have to go with the one that I know would have folks mournin' 'em. Would fight for both if I had the resources an' the opportunity.. Don't think about sendin' pay. Don't need it and I sure as hell don't want it.. That money.. put it towards the Galaxy Ranger, in any way that it could be- Forcin' some fancy higher ups in IPC's tech dev department to try an do somethin', if there's any family you can find, or just a nice ceremony if he passes.. That'd be my final choice on it, I suppose."

"Now, isn't that a wonderfully interesting name. My sources", who have very peculiar name indeed " say it means 'furthest from the sun', would you... know how to find the person named that way? I heard they're a talented mechanic and an ... let's call him 'asset' might need a mechanic and not a medic" (ignore me when in doubt esp. bc I'm promoting my mostly dead second blog with this interacting too)
".. Well lookit you, don't have to worry about findin' 'em because you managed to hit the nail on the head first go around." Their response is almost flat, seeming bothered by the presence of the man in one-sided recognition as they roll their shoulders back, letting out a small scoff. "Personal taste kind of thing but let's call a person a person when around me, not a fan of that whole.. 'asset' and 'tool' kind of ideology.. Anyway 'sides that." They shake their head, trying to untense and make sure they have their tone shift into something a bit more amicable. Letting in a slow inhale and holding it for a moment before releasing, they match the man's gaze with something a little a bit more neutral as they cock their head to the side. "Am I about to be blind-sided an' dragged into somethin' I won't be able to react to in a solid state of mind, or do you have a rundown of what's goin' on for me? .. Since this is a person.. I don't want to be goin' in with the kind of 'straightforward, efficient, and apathetic' mindset I'd probably run with for if this were just some broken down bot. Wouldn't be fair to 'em."
[ooc] and mun don't you worry one bit! i'd be lying if i said i weren't downright giddy over seeing an ipc muse pop up in my ask box

"Again, overthinker- just gotta make sure I don't step on toes I don't want to step on. That all aside though, that's somethin' to look forward to when the day comes, now isn't it? Don't know if I'd be more curious about the magic tricks or what kind of music you indulge in more for your shows." Moving to stoop over one of the small displays, they angle themselves out of Ahanon's line of sight while pointing at it. "Great revelations and plans without dates aside, these little things? I know they're all strewn about the exhibit an' the real ones are right outside the walls but they also look just so damn neat." It's one of the many replicas of frozen void rangers in the room. A 1/7th scale sculpture of the ranger on its back, emerging from a textured base delicately painted and dusted with something akin to flocking spray to resemble lighter sections of snow. Imitations of spikes of ice formed diagonally from harsh winds made of a hardly translucent material faintly pick up and fragment the gentle light of the museum.
"Could you imagine having a little model kit of something like this?~ Or anythin' not a paintin' we've seen in this place, really. The amount of time I would kill on things like this if I had any back home~ You got any sort of hobbies? Or do you think of your street performances as more of a hobby among other things?"
The mechanic stood out like a sore thumb in the city square, not by appearance- their outfit seeming relatively tame in it's simple muted browns and utility gear- rather there was a noticeably awkward way in which they were carrying themself. Aphelion gives a hard blink upon registering what Ahanon had just said, bringing a hand to their mouth as they let out a muffled snort. Moving their hand up to pinch the bridge of their nose they shake ever so slightly with a silent bout of laughter, grin slightly visible under the cover of their arm. They pause, letting in a low inhale before looking away, features crinkled in amusement for another few seconds that stretch out just a bit too long.
"Now, Listen- I- You" They hold up a finger in Ahanon's direction in a pause as another small chuckle hisses out. "I appreciate the timin' on that, 'preciate the honesty. But I'd be damned if I didn't point out how that's one hell of a thing to say right after someone says 'you don't seem the sort to cause problems'. Now, 'causin' I suppose ain't the right word in this case and 'participatin' is far more suitable. Ah.. in the names of the Aeons, again, the timin'. Just can't get over that." Sighing with a smile still plastered on their face they wipe a hand across their eyes, letting out a slow exhale through their mouth as they wind themselves down.
".. Not laughin' at you an' like, everythin' in context, that first part just really sent me into a bit of a loop, apologies if I came off mean, sincerely." Aphelion starts, making a point of looking over at Ahanon to reinforce their sentiment before continuing. "Still mean it though, if anythin' becomes an instance you would want to worry about." They trail off, pursing their lips, tongue running across their teeth before they drop their volume. "An' I'll stick to what I said but a word it a little different- Seems like you got good intentions.. and I'm not wholly against that wildly honest admission of yours.. Sometimes some people got a little too much an' are a little too stubborn to share by normal means, I think, for example." They give a slow nod, before returning back to a speaking voice. "Street performances though, huh? Maybe next time I swing around this whole area I'll catch one instead of just bein' all clueless and curious in the middle of the road."

"Think that anyone in charge of a large group of people would lose it a little from all the stress, if not already a bit out there just to accept and be comfortable in that kind of position." Aphelion muses, trailing off as they lower their voice to a murmur. "..Noticed it twice now that people are doin' a whole lot of either starin' at you or avoidin' you. Didn't want to bring it up sooner either when it was just a couple people in the lobby, but now again with that missus.. "
They look back over at Ahanon, an eyebrow cocked with concern as they continue, crossing their arms over their chest. "You don't seem the sort to cause problems, so I'd feel a bit more than awful if someone went and got enough gusto to try an' bother you while you're watchin' me go about bein' a nerd over old tech." With a sharp inhale they shake their head, before letting out a small chuckle. "Don't know, I'd be lyin' if I said I don't overthink, don't mind all of that if you don't want to. That kid sounded pretty stoked to see you though- what I picked up while out here bein' fascinated by some fancy stick, at least."
Seeming to want to dismiss their own worries they look back over at the portraits of the Supreme Guardians, giving a small nod in the direction of Cocolia's.
"Only one to have her kid with her." They note. "Must've really loved her daughter to break what looks like tradition just to be together in a paintin' like this.. In a way, guess that means that kid'll get two portraits in here one day."

"I see- Masked Fools, then? That makes much more sense- Your mask. And your name too. 'Aha'non. Had a vague hunch but didn't want to assume or didn't know if it'd be too up front to ask" Aphelion lets out a short huff, not quite laughter in its own right. "To be honest from what I thought I knew prior most who would call themselves Masked Fools were a bunch of outrageous eccentrics, but you seem pretty down to earth for the bit we've been walkin' an' talkin' for."
In an easy silence they wander about the main hall for a bit longer, pausing at each painting. Instinctively turning towards the slightly exasperated voice of a mother trying to explain to her child that a small carving in a display case is not a toy, the mechanic catches a glimpse of a something a fiery orange in the History and Culture Hall. Giving an empathetic nod to the woman as they pass Aphelion strolls into the hall, making a bee-line in the direction of the object.
"'Alisa Rand's lance'" They mumble, reading another small placard. "What a beauty. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a replica, but the spear head of it's real pretty regardless.. kind of reminds me of amber, color-wise. Seems a bit fitting for a place seemin' all frozen in time, what do you think?" Aphelion turns away from the spear to glance over at Ahanon, before focusing their attention on the portraits that line the walls.
"And I'd assume that I'd be on the mark if I said all the paintin's in here are of.. the title is 'Surpreme Guardian', if I remember correctly?"

"A brother an' a sister?- Now you sure've got one big family, hm?" Aphelion noted, gaze still focused on the machines. ".. It'd be somethin' if someone messed with the automotons using these things. Bit silly.. If people know how to set up all the commands an' things that is .. mm.. but considerin' how old the things are..? Probably not feasible. Not that I'm suggestin' someone should try. Or that it'd be a good idea- emphasis on all o' that." They take a step back from the display, circling around to the others adjacent to it with notably less intrigue before going on to continue with idle conversation. "Any more siblings? Or just the two? I was an only growin' up so I can't imagine how much of a mess y'all could've gotten up to."
