#Samsung has come a long way since it launched the first Galaxy Note back in 2011. The latest in the series is the new #GalaxyNote7 phablet, which as the company claims is the "most intelligent" smartphone till date. Samsung launched its Galaxy Note 7 in India on Thursday at Rs 59,990 and will make it available starting #September 2.

The device comes as a successor to the #GalaxyNote5 that was launched last year along with the #GalaxyS6Edge+. Notably, Samsung skipped one digit in the naming series to unify its portfolio across products.

Explaining the name Galaxy Note 7 instead of the #GalaxyNote6 the company said, "There are a couple reasons why. First, the Galaxy Note 7 will complement our #GalaxyS7 and #S7Edge , and unify our product portfolio. Second, the Galaxy #Note7 will minimize confusion about the latest mobile technology from Samsung, and provide full alignment with #GalaxyS smartphone."

So now that you know the reason behind the naming scheme of the #GalaxyNote 7, let us dive into the details as we spent some time with the flagship device at the launch.

The Galaxy Note 7 runs Android 6.0.1 #Marshmallow out-of-the-box and sports a 5.7-inch Quad HD dual-edge Super Amoled display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It includes both an iris scanner and a fingerprint sensor. The Indian version sports an octa-core Exynos processor clubbed with 4GB RAM.

Some of the connectivity features included are 4G LTE, NFC, #WiFi, #Bluetooth, #GPS and #USB Type-C. Backed by a 3,500mAh battery, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 also sports fast-charging technology as well.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 carries the same design profile that the company introduced with the #GalaxyS6 and the #GalaxyS6Edge smartphones last year. The handset build is a mix of glass and metal and has a dual-edge curved screen, all of which look aesthetically pleasing. The Black Titanium colour variant was the best looking among all because of its stealthy look.

However, since the device features a 5.7-inch display, it might be difficult to use it with one hand. That is expected as the Galaxy Note series was never made for one hand use. And that is why a stylus, S Pen was included. The #Galaxy Note 7 weighs 169 gram and measures 153.5mmx73.9mmx7.9mm in dimensions. It is also the company's first Galaxy Note device to feature USB Type-C port.

#WhatsApp’s new privacy policy: Are you really surprised?

The latest conundrum over WhatsApp’s privacy policy reminds me of the old adage – All good things come to an end. Except, in this case we have the power to let it not happen. We have 30 days until #Facebook (yes, and not WhatsApp) will decide on its new policy for your WhatsApp data to ensure well-targeted ads.

So, many users may have begun getting an alert telling them about the privacy policy and asking them to hit on ‘Agree’. There is a checkbox that you need to uncheck if you don’t want Facebook​ to use your account information to improve its ad and product experience ‘for users’.  And, I know a few who have mindlessly hit on agree without even knowing what it says. And, needless to say, there will be millions who will do so. Afterall, who really bothers reading about the changes, terms, conditions and so on.  Interestingly, if you click on check and hit on agree you can still go to settings and uncheck the box. As aforesaid, you have 30 days to do so.  Once you uncheck, there is no way you can get back and check it again. You can learn more about the changes and the legal nitty-grity here.

Facebook has a history of changing its policies to clearly put the company’s needs ahead of its users’ and has faced user ire each time. Looks like, it hasn’t taken any lessons from its most recent misleading India campaign either.

But are you really surprised with this move? Now, didn’t we already see this coming. It was just a matter of time.

When Facebook acquired WhatsApp​ for a whopping $19 billion, the social giant very well knew it would be worth every penny. When the high-profile acquisition took place back in 2014, founders Koum and Acton assured users by making tall promises about how WhatsApp would remain advertisement-free and work as a standalone app that it always has. But, the hushed voices kept saying – for how long? Looks like, here’s the answer – roughly 2 years. After all it was hard to believe that Facebook wouldn’t be looking at ways to monetise the service , considering the investment that has gone into the product. Facebook has given WhatsApp founders a rags to richest story.

But, its not just Facebook, there is a bigger picture to this. How bigger companies swallowing smaller ones could be ruining the user experience. And, WhatsApp’s futile promises only show how the mighty dollar is a winner here. A #Quora thread describes how in the past too, many companies have simply ruined an innovation, by acquiring a smaller company. There have been examples of big giants like #Apple, #Google, #Yahoo and #AOL buying innovative products and unable to do much with them. The most recent one being #Pinterest buying the read later service Instapaper. Like every other acquired company, Instapaper published a #blogpost promising ‘nothing will change’. Now, haven’t we heard that before. While the company promises nothing will change, the trail of comments in the blogpost clearly show how loyal and premium Instapaper users are worried about the changes that could come with their favourite service post acquisition.

#Instapaper, has a smaller user base compared to WhatsApp, and the latter has more at stake. For instance, some have already voiced their decision to quit WhatsApp and try other services like #Telegram.

Another most recent example is of #Dropcam, the company acquired by Google’s Nest labs. The founder has clearly said how ‘selling to Google’ was a mistake and it simply squashed innovations and annoyed the acquired team. And, there are several such stories. And, Facebook is one such company who has the potential to ruin the user experience of about 1 billion people – with majority – glued to WhastApp as its primary mode of communications. Probably, it is time to say – it was good till it lasted.

He also nick named the player with the name ‘#Chand’ which means Moon in Hindi. Dhyan Chand also lead the #Indian team as a captain and throughout his career had won 3 Olympic medals and also awarded Padma Bhushan and till date remains the only player in hockey to receive the award. Dhyan Chand retired from his service in army when he was 51 at the post of Major. During the period 1928 – 1956, Dhyan Chand won the gold #Olympic medal 6 times in a row.

The lifetime achievement awards in sports, which is regarded as the highest in the field in #India, the Dhyan Chand Award was initiated in 2002, to those who have contributed during their career in sports as well as have been major contributors in the promotions of the sports after retirement. Infuriating #Google #Chrome change can finally be fixed

#GoogleChrome is now the most widely used web browser in the world. It currently holds more than 40 percent of the web browsing market, beating #Mozilla's #Firefox and even the former leader #Microsoft's #InternetExplorer/Edge.

Although Chrome can be a memory hog sometimes, it has all its competitors beat with its speed, plus the variety and number of extensions available for it. Chrome power users also love the time-saving keyboard shortcuts mapped for a variety of actions.

However, there is one keyboard shortcut they've disabled that's either a boon or a bane for users.

Remember those times when you hit the backspace key inadvertently, Chrome immediately goes back to the previous page? That's on purpose since the backspace key is mapped to do precisely that: go back a page.

Now, on Chrome Update 52, Google has decided to remove that backspace keyboard shortcut altogether.

This change may be welcome to a majority of users who don't rely on the backspace shortcut anyway since the alt+left arrow still does the same thing. For keyboard and mouse power users, though, the backspace shortcut is indispensable.

According to the Google Code Reviews page, only 0.04 percent of page views are triggered by the backspace shortcut. That is still a sizable minority considering Chrome's user base is so massive. Backspace backlash will inevitably be heard.

To appease these backspace shortcut fans, Google released a free Chrome extension called "Go Back With Backspace." This extension will do just that, restore the "previous page" functionality of the backspace key.

To install this extension, just go to the Chrome Web Store "Go Back With Backspace" page then click "ADD TO CHROME". Read through what the extension is permitted to do and click "Add extension" to confirm. An icon for the extension will then be added to the upper-right corner of your Chrome browser.

Clicking on this icon will give you further options for hiding the icon from the menu or for completely removing the extension from Chrome.

Keep in mind that you will have to be on Chrome version 52 and later to install this extension. If you haven't updated Chrome yet, you will get a "Not Compatible" warning on the extension page.

#Microsoft buys AI start-up #Genee for smarter scheduling service in #Office 365 Microsoft is making sure that scheduling and rescheduling of large group meetings for companies at Office 365 is simple and smart. In a move to ensure this the company has acquired an #intelligence (#AI)-based scheduling service Genee. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, the #Redmond will shut down Genee's services on #September 1. "Microsoft has signed an #agreement to acquire Genee, an #ArtificialIntelligence-powered scheduling service," said #RajeshJha, Corporate Vice President, Outlook and Office 365, in a #Facebook post. Co-founders #BenCheung and #CharlesLee, who plan to join Microsoft, started Genee in 2014 to simplify the time-consuming task of scheduling (and rescheduling) meetings. "It's especially useful for large groups and for when you don't have access to someone's #calendar," #Jha added. Genee uses natural language processing and optimised decision-making #algorithms so that interacting with a virtual assistant is just like interacting with a human one. Let us see how Genee works, he said. "Say you want to meet a potential customer, #Diana, for coffee. Simply send an email to Diana and copy Genee, like you would a personal assistant," Jha noted. Genee understands that you want to "find a time to meet with Diana for coffee next week" and will streamline the process by emailing her directly with appropriate options that work with your calendar and preferences. You could share your #location, #photos and #videos via #Google’s chat app #Allo

#GoogleDuo made its way into India last week and Google had declared that Allo would follow soon.

Some features of the instant messaging app has come to fore courtesy #AndroidPolice and all the features show that the app has been built in a way to challenge rival #WhatsApp which leads the instant messaging platform space with over one billion users globally.

According to the screenshots, Allo other than instant #messaging will allow users to #sharelocation, photos, or videos taken from inside application, and also the files taken in a phone’s #gallery. However, other types of files like music or documents doesn’t seem to be possible at present, the online publication reported.

Also, Allo will allow sharing of gif images and permit users to write on images just like #Snapchat and also allow them to share. However, no text captions will be possible and the annotation feature will not be applicable to videos.

The app will also allow size compression for images and videos, just like WhatsApp, to make uploads faster. The report noted that the compression appears to be much more aggressive than what Google previously used with #Hangouts.

The option of playing the video inside application will not be available and you will have to use whichever #mediaplayer you prefer to watch the videos received within the application. Users will also not be able to trim videos before sending them. There is an option to disable the automatic download of received photos and videos, but no option to limit auto downloads to #WiFi only.

The publication also reported that the app will come with three preloaded sticker packs, with the option to download more. For now, 24 additional #sticker packs are available from various designers, and the publication notes that for now there seems to be no option to add a sticker pack via a URL or a zip file.

But Allo is different from Hangouts in a #uniqueway. Unlike Hangouts, Allo will reportedly provide the user the ability to delete sent or received messages. However, it is to be noted that features may change or added with the #launch of the #application.

#Uber Tells Investors It Wouldn’t Pay Above $2 Billion for #Lyft

However, Uber’s #CEO is said to oppose an acquisition at any price due to antitrust concerns.

As Lyft Inc. was gauging interest from prospective acquirers, executives from Uber Technologies Inc. told investors in the past few weeks that the company wouldn't pay more than $2 billion to purchase its main U.S. ride-hailing competitor, said people familiar with the matter.

Uber​ didn't make a formal offer, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions were private. Uber had previously considered purchasing Lyft as far back as 2014, and the two San Francisco companies have discussed the prospect informally, one of the people said. Despite executives floating the $2 billion price tag, Uber Chief Executive Officer #Travis Kalanick has said privately that he would not support such a deal because he believes it would face intense regulatory scrutiny, the person said.

Regardless, @lyft wouldn't consider $2 billion to be a credible offer, said another person familiar with the matter. Recode reported on Friday that Lyft sought as much as $9 billion but failed to secure serious interest. As fierce rivals, Uber has every incentive to downplay Lyft's value to investors and has done so in the past. Lyft and Uber declined to comment.

An investment from General Motors Co. early this year valued Lyft at $5.5 billion. GM and Lyft have held informal discussions about an acquisition in the past few months, people familiar with the matter said. GM suggested a price of at least $5.5 billion, but the talks never amounted to a formal offer, the people said. The Information, a technology website, reported last week that Lyft rebuffed an approach from GM. The automaker declined to comment.

Lyft has been working with Qatalyst Partners to solicit interest from potential acquirers, people familiar with the matter said. In addition to Uber and GM, Lyft held informal talks with Alphabet Inc., #Amazon.com Inc., #Apple Inc. and Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing, the people said. The New York Times reported on those discussions earlier on Friday.

Last month, Didi said it will acquire Uber's China business after a costly, two-year battle. The deal is expected to breeze past Chinese regulators, which approved a merger last year of Uber's two largest competitors there.

The antitrust environment in the U.S. is far different. Competition between Uber and Lyft has made rides more affordable for Americans. Lyft has managed to claw market share away from Uber in major U.S. cities this year, but at significant financial costs.

Lyft currently has $1.4 billion in cash, a person familiar with the matter said. That gives the company time to continue fighting independently.

Flipkart #cofounder Sachin Bansal made a startling disclosure that he was replaced as chief executive+ "because of performance," expertly placating employees riled by recent downsizing while also making a case for the deliver-or-go culture that's come to haunt internet companies.

#Bansal made the confession at a monthly #meeting on Friday that was heating up with employees questioning why they had to pay the price for management decisions gone wrong, according to two people present there. Bansal's admission diffused tensions immediately, bringing applause and cheers for the kind of candor that's become rare in the #corporateworld.

India's largest online marketplace has been buffeted this year by a series of valuation markdowns by mutual funds, several high-profile executive exits and staff reductions amid an intensifying battle with #Amazon, the world's largest online retailer.

Bansal's candidness is being seen by some experts as a strategic move that could help Flipkart win back #employee trust and boost morale at a time when it is preparing for the pivotal festival season that begins next month. Amazon #India, with an expanded budget gifted by its US parent, is expected to outspend Flipkart in terms of marketing and discounts.

Bansal, who was replaced as #CEO by cofounder Binny Bansal in January and made executive chairman after eight years at the helm, defended the company's decision to downsize saying it was done on merit, emphasizing that the management team, too, was not spared.

"Look at the top level around you. Everyone has changed. In fact, even I am gone," #Sachin Bansal said, according to the people present at the meeting, who declined to be identified. "Some of our targets have been missed and everyone, including the top management, has paid the price."

"At Flipkart, we have an open and transparent culture. The town hall that we conduct regularly, is one of the pillars of this culture of openness.....While the performance management philosophy was part of the last town hall discussion, an overwhelming majority of the time was spent on discussing the great strides that Flipkart had made in its business performance," said a Flipkart spokesman in an emailed response (full response below). Binny Bansal and human resources head Nitin Seth were also present at the meeting held at Flipkart's swanky 2 million-sq.ft. campus, #CessnaBusinessPark, that was opened about a year ago.

About 200 employees had gathered for the evening meeting, a monthly event that allows employees to send questions anonymously and have the most-voted questions addressed by the top management.

The August 19 meeting was the first to be held after Flipkart recently asked 700-1,000 employees to either resign or be sent off with severance pay. Several consumer internet startups including #Ola, #Snapdeal and #Grofers, too, have had to let go of employees with investors mounting pressure on them to cut costs and work towards profitability.

Flipkart's downsizing had caught its employees by surprise. When Flipkart effected a series of management changes earlier this year, the company had sought to assure staff, called '#Flipsters,' that while it may not hire more people layoffs were not being considered, according to an employee who, too, declined to be identified. ET could not independently verify this.

Employees' consternation with the downsizing and the manner in which it was handled carried on to the Friday meeting. Sachin Bansal's admission, however, not only drove home the message that no one was above board but also seemed to have brought renewed faith in the #founders.

"It was like a reminder of the Big Billion Day glitch in 2014, when Sachin and #Binny both emailed and apologized to the customers. They are the kind of people who acknowledge things when they screw up," said another employee who was at the meeting. Flipkart's debut mega sales event that year was marred by technical and delivery glitches.

"It is a very positive and rare development that they had the confidence and courage to own up to the entire process, and address it in a town hall," said #AnandorupGhose, partner-talent and rewards, at human resources consultancy Aon Hewitt, adding that he could not recollect such forthrightness, especially in a new-economy company, in the recent past.

"They have owned up to the fact that the management change was done was due to performance issues. Talking about it plainly with employees is a big positive," #Ghose said.

Among Sachin Bansal's most-controversial decisions was his strategy to focus attention on Flipkart's and fashion subsidiary #Myntra's mobile applications over the desktop and mobile websites. That resulted in the #company ceding leadership in desktop and mobile website traffic to #AmazonIndia. As Flipkart expanded its seller base aggressively and outsourced its delivery and logistics handling, customer experience also suffered.

In contrast to the existing document-based process, the move is intended to cut down time for SIM activation as KYC is verified instantly.

In e-KYC, a customer through her Aadhaar number and biometrics will online authorise #UIDAI to provide demographic details such as name, address, date of birth and gender, along with the digitally-signed photograph, to the mobile operator.

"Digitally-signed electronic #KYC data provided by UIDAI is machine readable, making it possible for licensees to directly store it as customer record in their database for the purpose of issuing a mobile connection," a #DoT notification said.

COAI Director General Rajan Mathews felt that the move will be helpful for all stakeholders as it simplifies activation, eases verification process and enhances security.

"Earlier, the entire verification process would last 8-10 hours and it will now be greatly reduced," he hoped.

Bharti Airtel plans to start rolling out Aadhaar-based e-KYC solutions this week, MD and CEO (India and South Asia) Gopal Vittal said.

Vodafone India termed the e-KYC solution as "an instant, secure and green mobile subscriber verification project" and said all stakeholders will benefit from it.

Customers will soon be able to walk in with their Aadhaar card in any of the Vodafone stores and walk out connected within minutes, the company statement read.

"For the consumer, instant activation means better experience and security of personal confidential information. For Vodafone, it will improve quality of sales as well as regulatory compliance. For the regulator, it not only means a green initiative, but hassle-free governance and accurate audit results," said Sunil Sood, MD and CEO, Vodafone India.

According to Hemant Joshi, Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells, the move will bring down the cost of subscriber acquisition significantly as telecom companies will not have to spend on physical transportation of forms, verification, scanning and storage.

"Also, it would help easier compliance and reduction in litigation on account of audit carried out by term cell," Joshi said.
