To a certain degree, Steve knew how Bucky felt. Steve, too, had asked himself the exact same question in the months and years to follow his return from the ice. Why had he made it out of that suicide mission alive when so many others had not been so lucky? Why was he still alive and relatively unscratched when his best friend had lost his life in service for his country?! It wasn't quite the same, of course not, but in some way it was similar.
"No one expects you to go back to being who you were back then, Buck." Steve assured gently as he moved to take his seat there with him. "It doesn't matter as long as you are free and safe from their grasp on you. That's all that matters. We'll figure out everything else along the way."
Steve couldn't say it didn't feel like a stab right through the heart to hear those questions coming from his best friend. Deep down he had feared thought like those were torturing him even after not only escaping but finally breaking free from their control, but to actually hear them spoken out loud? It felt so much worse, though Steve figured he couldn't blame him.
"Must have something to do with the stuff Zola did back in Azzano." He began, even though he knew that perhaps that wasn't the answer Bucky had hoped for. If there was something like a right answer to such questions at all. "He knew you survived whatever happened in that factory. Looking back at it now, that must have been why he lured us onto that train."

Steve couldn't possibly put into words the amount of relief he felt the moment he realized that he seemed to have gotten through to Bucky. It was a slow process and didn't happen right away, not completely all at once, but he could see it in those blue eyes. Something had changed. Something slowly dawned on him. Like a long forgotten memory and while they were surely only bits and pieces at the moment that didn't make much sense to him, Steve had new reason to hope.
Somewhere deep down, behind all that brainwashing and conditioning done by Hydra over the decades, a part of his old friend was still there. Just as Steve had hoped and he couldn't help the hint of a smile, a smile of relief, when at last he seemed to recognize him as his best friend, calling him by his name instead of referring to him as his 'mission' or 'target'. It was still a long way to go from there, Steve knew, but it was something to work with. Something to start from if only Bucky would let him and accept his help with it all. Not to push him to do anything, but to help him regain his memories should he want him to. And god did Steve hope he wouldn't push him away. Having to walk out of his life again when he had just found him again would shatter his heart to a million pieces, but he would do it if that's what Bucky wanted.
"I'm not going anywhere, Buck." He shook his head once again when the other told him to leave. "Not without you. Not till I know that you are safe and out of their grasp." He added, eyes locked with Bucky's as he continued, about to suggest something he could only hope he would agree to. "I can only imagine how you're feeling right now, how terrifying it must be to break through what they made you believe for such a long time, but I can help you figure it out. I know a place where they won't find you again, somewhere for you to stay for as long as you want. All you gotta do is walk out of here with me. Please let me help you."
🔪 (Steve/Bucky)
"Bucky..." Steve gapsed in horrified surprise as he was shoved with his back against the wall. A fearful shiver running down his spine when he felt the cold blade of a knife against his throat. There was no damage done...yet, but he figured it was only going to be a matter of time if he didn't manage to get through to him anytime soon.
"Buck, please, it's-... It's me, Steve."

Dugan raised a brow as he looked at the younger man. Something about this was extremely odd, even for someone who'd seen a lot fighting Hydra. And it wasn't just that the man had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, the fact that he had a striking resemblance to Bucky didn't necessarily help to make him less suspicious either.
"Well good," He nodded then, watching Lukas carefully. He'd said he wasn't Hydra, but wasn't that exactly what anyone working for these guys would say?! "Cause I can't wait to hear that."
Maybe playing around the time tunel is not the best idea, landing on the ground hard. The teen looks up to see Dum Dum, and sighs, recognizing the man from old photos. "Um. Hi." The teen says.
Timothy froze for a moment or two the moment he watched a young man fall from the sky, seemingly appear out of nowhere. Then again, they had just escaped a secret Hydra base with many experiments done by Zola, so it wasn't entirely unlikely that they had somehow found a way to mess with their minds.
"What the hell?" He muttered under his breath as he watched the scene unfold.

"Your arm you mean?" He asked as he pulled away from his task for the moment to look at the other. He'd seen injuries much more severe than this that had turned out just fine in the end, to his knowledge anyway. Surely the same would be true for Bucky's arms as well. "There's always a certain risk of infection with any wound, but I wouldn't worry too much about it." He added as he turned his attention back to work on cleaning Bucky's injured arm.
"So long as you make sure to keep the wound clean and change the bandages regularly, your arm should be just fine in a couple of days, perhaps a couple of weeks, but it'll be fine."
"And don't stress about. You saw the guy just in time and send him to hell before he could do too much damage."

"So you don't think I'll lose it?" There was a definitive pout gracing his expression as he tried, and failed, to sit still. It was just a graze to his left arm, but whatever Jim was using to clean it felt like fire. He wasn't sure it was supposed to spread through his veins the way it was, and septicemia was a real, genuine, fear. Bucky was convinced he could feel the pain all the way to his toes; but maybe it was just the fact he wasn't used to being the one hurt.
They all had their roles in this merry little band. Bucky's just happened to be the scout, long range support, and he supposed, second in command. "That guy came out of no where." His gaze drops as he said it, radiating a sense of failure, and flexes his fingers. If he had been just a second slower, Jones would have taken a much worse hit.

Steve gave a slow nod as he listened to her words. He remembered being on the plane, remembered steering it down in to the ice determined to stop the bomb Schmidt had sent to New York City and next thing he knew he was here at the hospital. What had happened in the meantime or how much time had gone by? Steve had had no idea. But it didn't really matter, did it? The mission was successful in the end. That was all that was important.
"I didn't think I'd make it out of that plane alive" Steve admitted softly as he closed his eyes for a moment and rested his head back into the soft pillows. Regardless of the serum, he felt terrible, weaker than he'd felt in such a long time and so incredibly cold as though it came from inside. But who was he kidding? That notion was ridiculous. No one would survive actually being frozen for a certain period of time.
"How long was I out?" He asked as he opened his eyes to look at her again.
Something was different, that was the first thing Steve noticed when he came to. Not something he had expected to ever happen again if he was being honest but then again, perhaps the serum had done more than to make him taller and healthier then he had ever been. Perhaps it had miraculously helped him survive the crash of his plane into the ice and he was now trapped in it. Alive but unable to get out. And yet... the soft mattress beneath his back told him otherwise.
He was in a bed, most likely at a hospital of some sort. He'd been there enough times to remember what that place smelled like. What he didn't know, though, was where that hospital was at or how he had gotten there. Surely not on his own, that was for sure.
It was only then that a familiar female voice pulled him out of his thoughts and caused him to open his eyes. "Peggy..." he breathed out softly as her fingers brushed his cheek. "Where....where am I?"

"If you have something to say, right now's a perfect time to keep it to yourself." Dugan
"Hey, I didn't say a word." Dugan reminded as he looked up at the other. His hands raised in defense as though to show that he meant no offense or harm. He was willing to do whatever necessary to defeat Hydra, no matter how dangerous the stuff they had to do in the process, and still... their most recent mission had turned out to be nothing short of a trip to hell and back. One that came perhaps a little too close to a suicide mission and yet it had worked out just fine in the end. Something he was undoubtedly thankful for.
"Just wanted to make sure everyone made it out of there alive and still more or less in one piece."

"We barely got out of there alive, and you want us to go back?" to Steve
Steve pursed his lips for a moment as he thought about an answer to give his best friend. There was an answer he supported to give and there was an answer he knew Bucky wanted to hear. And god how he wished going home was an option for both of them, but Steve knew better.
Having been through hell and back in that Hydra factory in Azzano, Bucky had more than earner his right to be sent back home, out of that hellhole that were the front lines in Europe and back to where it was safe. Yet Steve wasn't so lucky. He had to stay no matter what, had to keep up the shield and do whatever it was that everyone back home expected from Captain America. He'd miss Bucky terribly, no doubt about that, and while he wanted him to stay there with him, he still knew he couldn't be selfish. Couldn't force Bucky to risk his life any more than he already had and deep down, he didn't want to either. Quite the contrary in fact: he wanted his best friend to be out of danger, wanted him to go home where he knew his loving family was already waiting for him; probably praying right now that their son and older brother would make it back from overseas alive and in one piece.
"Well, I want to destroy all of Hydra." He said eventually, making sure to pick his words carefully. "Wipe each and every base they have off the map, send them to their well-deserved place in hell and I need a team for that, but you've already been through enough. You rightfully earned your ticket back home."

"Wait. You know what you're doing?" Morita
Jim was the team's medic and as such, yes he did know what he was doing. Had been trained to for moments like those and honestly, fighting side by side with his team mates was one thing. Knowing that he could actually do something to help one of them in case they got injured, did help to make the hell on earth they were trapped in more endurable for him. Though that wasn't to say he didn't hate seeing people he had come to consider his friends injured. Yet in times of war, that happened too frequently for his liking.
"Of course, I know what I'm doing," he tried to assure as he continued to clean the wound the other had sustained during their most recent mission. "I'm the medic of the team, remember? Trust me on this. You'll be fine in a couple of days."

"A lot of people died with the Winter Soldier programme. I just keep wondering, why me? Why did I survive? Why did I end up going through all of that for so many years? Why couldn't -- why couldn't my body have given up instead of going through decades of torture?"

"Hey, buddy, no need to feel awkward about me getting you some clothes," Howard Stark quipped with a grin. "Let's just get you looking sharp and ready for whatever comes your way." His tone was casual yet persuasive, encouraging Steve to embrace the new outfit with ease.
Steve gave a half-hearted nod in response to Howard's words. Following the successful procedure he'd just been through, he definitely needed some new clothes because after such a remarkable transformation, his old clothes would no longer serve their purpose. And it wasn't that he wasn't grateful for some help with that, but the outfit he was looking at now? It was a little different from what he had expected. Something that wasn't really suitable for fighting over at the front lines.
"I...I appreciate your help, I really do." Steve began honestly, then paused briefly as he reached up to rub his forehead with his hand. "It's just... not what I thought I'd wear while fighting bad guys overseas."
