despite all her best efforts to mask it, keeley always seemed to know when barbara was burnt out. she never really liked to admit it or talk about it, so distractions were always a good bet when it came to trying to combat it.

brilliant. that's encouraging. she wondered what pre-existing ideas about her he was coming in with. was it how strict she is, how weird she is? she'd like to get ahead of whatever was coming, really, but there was too much to choose from. oh well.

just putting a quick disclaimer/heads-up out there - i am also @ofpedantry over on twitter, and i’m currently writing a beard/barbara (what? who said that? not me!) fic here. characterisation details, hcs etc about barbara herself will be consistent throughout all three platforms. as much as our babs (sorry bestie, i know you hate it) is amazing in the show, we unfortunately don’t have much canon information about her so i have done the work on that myself and come up with my own lil details about her that i carry with me wherever i happen to write as her. 

protecting other creatives’ ideas is v important to me and i know if i saw similarities i thought might be taken from somebody else i’d be concerned enough to let someone know, so i thought i’d make sure ya’ll knew they were all just lil ol me. :’) just one big case of multi-platform brainrot over here!

an instinctual response of ' clearly, by me ' was well on its' way to bursting out, but barbara's shock over the appearance of the man in front of her seemed to knock the wind out of her entirely. ❝ oh. umm. no? ❞ she turned to survey the scene of richmond green, checking the other remaining benches. all in view were also occupied, in all fairness. ❝ right, sorry, i didn't mean to hog. ❞ she lifted her bag up off the available side of the bench, shifting over a little to give the stranger more room to sit.

❝ okay, where have i seen you before? ❞ it came out of nowhere after a minute or two of sitting in silence with the man, her eyes occasionally flicking to him when he wasn't looking to try and figure it out. it was no good, she had to get to the bottom of it.

“Ah, right, is … is Keeley about?” she’s never quite sure how to deal with Barbara. The woman was, frankly, a little unhinged, at least what Rebecca had encountered of her, but she also held a healthy respect for that kind of insanity. There were unplumbed depths there, of that she was sure, but she was not equipped for that kind of cave dive, thank you kindly. “Or is it just, um, just you?”

oh no. ❝  oh. hello, rebecca. ❞ every run-in she’d had with the woman up to now had been a living NIGHTMARE. navigating interactions with people she already had a pre-existing admiration for had always been a real issue for her. ‘just be cool babe, you’ll be fine!” keeley had said encouragingly the last time she’d given her some advice on the matter ( barbara wasn’t sure she’d ever managed ‘cool’ in her entire life, but she thanked keeley for the vote of confidence either way. ) putting her business head on felt like the closest thing to ‘cool’ she had within her, so that was what she at least tried to go for.

❝  no keeley at the moment, no, she’s at a conference. ❞  pause for an attempt at a polite, apologetic smile. ❝  you’ll have to manage with ‘just me’, i’m afraid.  is there anything i can help you with at all? ❞ the latter was genuine, but self-preservation had kicked in and added a tinge of sarcasm to her opening words, hitting back with the same phrasing she’d taken slight offence to.

i have so many feelings about this!!!!!

before keeley a working atmosphere like this would’ve been her own personal nightmare. being so close to someone like that in general is SO much for her but at work??? ohhh nonono she likes her space to work and breathe and eat and just... exist in peace. but meeting keeley and actually finding a person she can happily sit in comfortable silences with (they’re rare, bc cmon now it’s keeley, but if she expresses that she needs quiet time she happily obliges) without it preventing her from concentrating or relaxing? mhm mhm also curse op for making the ted/beard & keeley/barbara comparison... i was trying to keep my beardbarbara agenda quiet for at least a little while but off i go i guess!! barbara and beard being two sides of the same coin once again!! just two eccentrics and their chaotic-good besties :’) yeah <3
