Krystal sighed, on the verge of a full-in pout. She liked Penelope, she really did, but the girl just had no cosmetic vision whatsoever. “Fashion is a cycle. The 90s went out after Y2K, and now they’re back in. If I see another twelve year old with a plastic choker on I’ll die. But, anyway, no. You’re thinking of balayage. Hombre is Spanish for friend.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
penelope had seen a bunch of kids walking around with plastic chokers on--which she’d never really been all that interested in even when they were a thing.  “i had one of the kids in my dance class ask me if i had any old butterfly clips she could hold onto.”  she commented with a shrug of her shoulders.  she didn’t understand why those trends were coming back.  “the fuck is balayage?”  penelope’s face contorted with confusion both at the new term, and krystal misunderstanding the word ombre for hombre.  “i thought ombre was a hair term, like going from light to dark or dark to light?”  she asked, genuinely confused with the terms.

“Oh thank goodness,” Austin said melodramatically with a chuckle. “Here I thought running you over was going to get me sued, but I should have known it was the dog. I really can’t take her out in public she’s quiet ferocious.” Austin joked as Ruth sat back reveling in the attention Penelope was giving her. Ruth was a lover, now Daisy his bichon mix on the other hand was a bit of a shit head and probably most likely to get him sued for something. Which was a hilarious given the size comparison of the two dogs. Peaking into her bag to see what she got he grinned. “Quality dinner plans tonight?” Austin joked as he looked at the snacks.
Tumblr media
penelope shrugged her shoulders, paying more attention to the dog at her feet.  she had always loved animals, but she never had one herself.  “oh, well if i’d dropped the snacks i’d certainly be suing.”  penelope joked, laughing as she petted the dog a little bit longer before she stood up completely with her bag back in her hands.  “who says i don’t have a wonderful meal waiting back at the house for me to eat?”  she didn’t, but she could have if she tried.  thanks to her dad, penelope had become quite the cook over the years.  then, she sighed dramatically, “fine.  i was planning on just eating junk and watching movies, you caught me.”

“where did you go to school for it?” david chuckled. “sounds like you may need to do one if i’m not the only one asking.” he smiled slightly. “i took dance in college for a credit. i really liked it. if you decide to have a dance lesson of us older folks, i’d love to know about it.”
Tumblr media
“all over.  i didn’t really have a main school.”  penelope explained with a shrug, since she’d moved around a lot growing up it wasn’t that she had a real big dance academy or anything.  “i was in an arts school for a couple of years toward the end of high school, but otherwise i was really moving around a lot as a kid.”  the blonde explained.  “oh, i definitely will.  there’ll probably be flyers too, if i wind up doing it.”

“We should probably see about getting you a new one all together then…I can come back and install it tomorrow if you want,” he offered up, laughter falling from his lips as she snorted, “Yeah, no, I totally get that. You won’t catch me running out in just a towel either…but, on the other hand, it’s better than the alternative. I can’t help, but to think, what would Gertie say if she saw us running out the house naked,” he continued to laugh as he finished up with the fire alarm, climbing down the ladder. “That’s about all I can do right now, but you should seriously see about getting a new one, and getting a carbon monoxide alarm as well.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“forget about just gertie--the whole town would be talking.  and now, in the age of camera phones?  nope.  i don’t need to see that living on in infamy forever.  no thank you.”  penelope giggled, shaking her head as she snacked on the snacks she had stashed in the house before offering the box of cookies to kyle if he wanted anything.  she shrugged her shoulders.  “it’s a good thing i’m not living here.  but i can’t say i won’t wind up crashing.  so it’s probably better if i get a new system or something.”  she didn’t want to chance anything else happening like this again.

Madison smiled and nodded. “It’s nice to meet you Penelope. I’m Madison, Madison Heine.” She replied. “That name does sound awful familiar. Caulfield… “ She couldn’t put her finger on it and then brushed the thought out of her head. “So, you been findin’ the stuff in town alright?” She asked the girl suddenly. “I mean, if you’ve been here for a few months you must know where everything is by now, right?” Madison asked. “I don’t know how long it took me to figure out where everything was when I went away to college, almost the whole first year.” She said with a small smile.
Tumblr media
“my uncle randy owns the dogwood bed and breakfast.”  she offered after a couple of moments.  her own dad and mom had lived in town their whole lives as well, but penelope had only visited a bunch of times and hadn’t ever really been there herself to live for good until after her dad’s passing.  “yeah.”  penelope laughed with a nod of her head, “not like there’s a whole lot of places you can miss if you’re shopping in town.”  it was small, which penelope liked ( and also didn’t like, since it was smaller than what she was used to growing up, but still good ).  “like i said, i’ve been coming to visit since i was a kid, so unless things have moved or the town played a huge prank on me and anybody else visiting i think it’s gonna be fine to find my way around.”  she joked, laughing.  she knew the best routes to and from her uncle’s place better than anyone having spent hours as a kid running back and forth to buy snacks at the stop ‘n go.

“‘Course I did –one order of mango habenero, one order of garlic ‘n butter.” Annie didn’t mind waiting, nor did she mind ordering for the both of them. Despite living together, she hadn’t seen much of Penelope –between work and going and coming from Colt’s, it felt like they were constantly missing each other. “Sit, sit! I ordered a few minutes ago, so we’ve got some time to chat before stuffin’ our faces.”
Tumblr media
penelope grinned at her friend.  they hadn’t seen a lot of each other, since penelope had recently been preoccupied with renovations at her parents house for the studio, actually teaching and--until the past couple of days--her own relationship.  “okay, well, best we play catch up as best we can.  do you have any big news for me?”  she questioned, not sure if annie had anything to tell her.  but she had stuff to tell annie--namely her own breakup.  she took a sip of her water.  “if not, no worries, i got some news.  it ain’t so pretty, though.”

“No, no. That’s unexpected in an expected way. Everyone expects people to, like, rebel and have colored hair or a nose piercing. Oh! You know what I think would be so cute?” Krystal had already pulled her phone out, swiping through the Pinterest app to get to her hair vision board. “Like, a Christina Aguilera Dirrty look. Platinum with black highlights. So dramatic.” She turned the phone to show Pen the picture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she had a whole pinterest board dedicated to hairstyles.  penelope barely had any sort of go to look when she was feeling like she needed a change.  she looked at the picture and tilted her head to the side.  “dramatic.  i thought those chunky dark highlights were out, though?”  she questioned, but she wasn’t too big on hairstyle trends.  she was lucky enough to be fashionable in wardrobe thanks to her mother sending her the latests.  “what if i did like brown and a lighter brown?  like, what’s it called--ombre?”

Austin led Ruth down the sidewalk, the old girl was having a hard time in her older age but Austin was insistent on getting the Bernese mountain dog the proper amount of exercise to keep her healthy. He was minding his own business when suddenly someone collided with him. “Awh shit,” Austin cursed reaching out to steady the woman he realized was penelope. “You okay Penelope? I didn’t cause you any damage did I?” He questioned looking over her, Ruth stepping forward and nudging the woman’s hand. “Careful she’s a real ruthless killer,” Austin joked as the dog licked her hand.
Tumblr media
penelope shook her head and looked down at her grocery bag--a reusable bag with a ballerina on it--and was grateful that it only held a couple of snacks.  she still needed some more stuff, but she was only bothered to pick up a couple of snacks today.  “no damage.”  she replied with a smile before she looked down at the dog and her grin widened as she greeted her. “hi.”  she pet the dog’s head, scratching behind her ears as she giggled. “oh, yeah, i’m afraid for my life.  i might have to sue you for her scaring me.” she joked as she looked back up at austin.

“The steam?” he questioned as he turned over the smoke alarm in his hands, “You got any more batteries? Strange that the shower would do that,” Kyle’s brows furrowed as he looked over at her, “There must have sure been a lot of steam to do that,” a soft chuckle leaving his lips, “Must’ve been pretty scary hearing this loud thing go off while you were butt naked. That’s like my worst fear…having to run out the house naked.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
penelope made a face as she looked at the smoke alarm and shrugged.  she genuinely didn’t know.  “it’s probably old.  nobody’s really used the house in a long time til i just came back to town.”  it was no secret that the caulfield house, the one rhett had bought after high school with money from the wedding and from saving up from his work, hadn’t been used since they moved away twenty-six years earlier.  now penelope was using it as a studio, because she couldn’t yet bring herself to live in the house.  she snorted with a nod of her shoulders, “i know i shoulda like, ran outta here.  but if you think i’ll ever run out in just a towel, not happening.  i don’t need the whole town to see that.”

hayesbeauchamp‌:
He wasn’t equipped for this. He didn’t have that sensitive chip to coddle and comfort in times of need and this very much felt like a time of extreme need, but he could tell she didn’t have anywhere else to go or anyone to talk to in the town. So he took a deep breath and searched around the apartment for a blanket to wrap around her shoulders and motioned for her to sit down. At the very least, he could offer her a place to settle. He probably should’ve been at the funeral home, at least making an appearance, and all he could hope was that she wasn’t here to rub that in his face.
Her eyes, red and tear-filled, told him another story. “I don’t blame you. You shouldn’t have to be there right now. Let me, uh– let me make you some coffee or tea or somethin’.” Quickly moving to the kitchen, he had to sift through his own mess to find a cup. Thank god tea bags were one thing he actually managed to keep on hand. “It’s not a trouble to me, I just wasn’t expectin’ company, so the place is a wreck.” As if it wouldn’t be any other time. After a few minutes in the microwave and a spoon of sugar, he returned with a warm mug to hand over hoping it would do the trick. He wasn’t going to be the first one to say something, to send his condolences or put his foot in his mouth by asking when she got back to town. While he wasn’t great at navigating these situations, he at least found it best to shut the hell up. “Didn’t have honey, so I hope it’s okay.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
penelope tightened her grip on the blanket when hayes gave it to her and took a seat on the couch, curling up under the warm blanket as she sat there watching him move about the apartment.  she hadn’t been there in, well--she hadn’t really been back in years.  she had no place to go in the town, though.  it was home but it also wasn’t.  not really, and she was reminded by that fact when she felt like everybody dropped by the funeral home as she’d been discussing things.  people had stopped her on the street talking about her father and saying how much they would miss him, and most of them hadn’t seen him for more than a vacation or two in several years.
penelope shook her head, waving her hand when he said the place was a mess.  she hadn’t even really noticed.  she took the mug in her hands and blew on it before taking a sip.  “you should see--”  she stopped short in the middle of her sentence.  “i actually, you know what?  i don’t have a home.”  penelope shook her head, a laugh passing through her lips.  “i’ve been livin’ outta a hotel since daddy got sick.  for all my mother’s fashion sense she ain’t got the sense to take a damn break and come be with him when he was dying.”  penelope spoke bitterly, not holding back what she’d been wanting to say all day.  she’d been stuck planning the whole thing since her mother was stuck with meetings in manhattan and couldn’t get away.  “i don’t think that woman bothered to visit the hospital since she got me back from california.”  penelope hadn’t even been settled there yet, just getting her own bearings when she’d gotten the phone call about her father getting sick.  she didn’t even know if anybody at home knew she was even back in the states permanently.  she took another sip of the tea, a belated reaction to his earlier comment when she spoke quietly again in between sips.  “the tea’s fine.  thank you.”

krystalbeauchamp‌:
Krystal examined Penelope’s hair carefully. It wasn’t unusual for people to come to her for beauty advice; she was something of a guru, and people with taste were sorely lacking in these parts. “You could go for both. Maybe, like, an ombre, y’know? Or like, an ashy brown with blonde highlights. Do something unexpected.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
penelope figured that the best place to bring it up was the salon.  “well i’ve never done anythin’ with my hair before.”  she shrugged her shoulders, takin’ a seat down in one of the chairs and looking back in the mirror.  she’d only really gotten it cut, or trimmed.  never thought about dyeing it before.  “unexpected?  wouldn’t unexpected be like some kind of crazy color?”  penelope asked with her head tilted to the side.  not that she could really see herself with something wild, like blue hair or something.

penelope turned her head when she saw somebody walk up to her and she eyed the other’s outstretched hand.  even though she was technically new, she knew so many people in the town that she didn’t feel like it.  “penelope caulfield.”  she nodded, shaking the other’s hand.  most people recognized the last name from her uncle down at the dogwood.  some people even knew her father, or had known of him.  the sheer amount of people the blonde had dealt with at the funeral was enough to show how small the town was.  “months ago, actually.  but i’ve been ‘round here and there before.  guess we’ve just never bumped paths before.”
@ofpenelope
Madison knew this town like the back of the town. So, when she saw someone who she didn’t recognize, she always introduced herself. She smiled as she approached a nice looking girl with brown hair. “Hi there, I’m Madison.” She extended her hand. “I haven’t seen you around town, did you just move here?” Madison asked.

Favorite Holiday?
Tumblr media
“we weren’t really big on holidays as a family.  but daddy always made sure we came back to frostford for christmas, so i guess christmas would be my favorite.  it was always the longest time we spent in town too.  i got to help my uncle decorate the dogwood–which, i’m now gonna get paid to do.  and it was just nice.  it was the one time all my friends in town weren’t at school whenever i was visitin’.”
