“i’m better than i once was, you cannot deny that. i haven’t been thrown in over a year.” he put a hand to gaston’s arm, a near unconscious move to try and soothe the other man’s restlessness.

it was a quicker restlessness than he’d expected - he’d planned for at least another week but if tomorrow was when gaston needed to go, tomorrow they would go. bigger game would mean going further from the village, which meant proper packing.

and hung over riding. brilliant. still, he couldn’t deny his own brand of growing anxiety - as if gaston’s restlessness were a virus that could effect only him. perhaps that was the reason behind his excessive consumption. likely.

“what sort of beast are you looking to conquer on this trip, gaston?”

for untrained eyes, it was unnoticeable. shoulders sagging imperceptibly. muscles more relaxed. gaston leaning back comfortably against his seat. himself probably never noticed - and it was doubtful he ever would. a low hum left his throat as his eyes shifted from the fire to lefou.

“ you’re right. ” he admitted, almost appearing surprised. “ it has been a while since the last time. ” then he laughed. “ however, i’m afraid as you are now, you would only embarrass yourself. and me. and the horse. ”

he let out a breath, then glanced at the trophy wall further away in the tavern.

“ a big one. i feel there’s something missing on that wall. ” a thoughtful expression, even if no thought really crossed his mind. “ maybe the one we caught a glance of when we came back to town the last time. i think i know where it goes to eat. and it’s easy to track. ”

he brought his glass to his lips, looking at lefou from over the rim.
