all of this discourse just feels like yet another iteration of this evergreen tweet on behalf of the anti-fanfic people. they’re extrapolating from like twenty annoying teenagers who don’t like the “boring” (actually worth reading) stuff they’re assigned in their high school english class because it doesn’t include their favorite k-pop boys smooching and pretending that everyone who likes fanfic is Like That 

85% of fanfic is soulless garbage made to appeal to kinks or simple-minded people who Like A Brand™ but, y’know, 85% of video games are soulless garbage made to appeal to the worst manchildren on the planet, and that doesn’t change the ones that are legitimately art.

see also: most films are action movie dreck or bland popcorn romcoms, most novels are shitty dad thrillers and bad romance novels, et cetera.

fanfic definitely skews trashy because it’s unfiltered, anyone can make it, and a lot of it is done by people who otherwise wouldn’t be making art; not because only Artists™ should be making art, but a lot of people just... don’t have that much to say.

the fact that the distribution is skewed by the inherent survivorship bias that traditional work has from needing to survive traditional publishing and promotion doesn’t mean that there’s not great works outside of that pipeline! the difference comes from the fact that the distributions are not equivalent. a curated selection of fanwork would be just as good as an equally curated selection of any other work.

i spent a ton of time writing a bayesian proof of sturgeon’s law, but i decided that it wasn’t really relevant

the contrarian, defensive streak in me always wants to violently disagree with people whenever i see some sort of snide, offhand comment about how fanfiction does not have the same artistic merit as fucking idk. dickens. or whatever

and that is, i am aware, a stupid reaction, but it's also a stupid point to make in the first place. like ok. you've picked a seminal work/author from the height of the english canon. most of all literature will not compare to that in "literary merit" (and what do you mean by that, anyway?). but i would hope that you're not being obnoxious to your friends and family when you see them reading some random thriller novel and saying that it doesn't have the worth of shakespeare lmao

fanfic has only even existed as a thing for what, 50 odd years? and pretty much no one has any concept of what its defining works are, and what of it is going to stand the test of time, b/c there hasn't been time, and additionally no one is willing to give the genre serious artistic consideration

nothing gains artistic merit if people aren't willing to even consider it a piece of art with value

and, anyway, i'd say that the number of serial-numbers-filed-off works and the number of authors who have made the fic to trad pub pivot shows that there is plenty of fanfic that has at least as much "literary merit" as random [genre] fiction books being published today. the only difference is ability and/or willingness to jump through hoops and get past gatekeepers, for good or for ill

Side note: I realize that today’s the winter solstice, aka the shortest, darkest day of the year. We’ve been through hell and back this 2020, but from here on, the days are going to start getting longer and brighter. I can’t help but read some sort of hope into that.
