Catti is interesting… There’s this aspect to her where like, you kind of assume she’s this generic goth girl who fills out the class, at a glance. But there’s hints here and there, like this, that she has a lot going on we are not yet privy too. Notably, she has a connection to both Kris (Who she learned magic with) and Noelle (Who is confirmed to have pet her sometimes - You have to have Noelle act on a Tasque to learn this.) She feels ill at ease with her heavily social family. She’s phone obsessed in a game with some notable phone symbolism. Notably… She’s a cat. And one of the elements - the one with the most discussion by far and the first one to show up - is Cat/Puppet, which is… Notable. Puppets, as a parallel, have been drawn to Kris in the conversations with Spamton. Catti is a goth girl who speaks very little, often in one-word sentences like Kris. She is the black sheep of her family, like Kris. And she has also had an interest in the occult., I do wonder if the idea here is that Catti is the elemental Cat to Kris’ elemental Puppet. Additionally, she and Jockington are the only other members of the class to have portraits and to be new characters. Monster Kid, Temmie, and Snowdrake fill out the class beside them, and they are all returning characters. So it would be… Weird, if at least Catti is not important. Jockington… Seems a little like a meme character, I dunno about him doing anything actually important that isn’t like, purely offscreen. I do suspect Catti will be very important later on

I FINALLY GOT INTO THE HADES II TECHNICAL TEST
Tumblr media
EDIT: THIS IS OBJECTIVELY BAD TEST DESIGN. DO NOT DEFEAT HECATE FOR A FIFTH TIME
I can no longer make basic side quest progress that I KNOW IS IN THE GAME (I watched other people play first) because I am better than them, and killed Hecate faster than they want me to.
Tumblr media
Literally my choices are start over and die on purpose to continue the quest lines or stop playing the demo they WANT ME, the hyperfixated guy to play, to help make sure they have a smoother launch! And they blocked me out because I killed Hecate TOO WELL.
(Literally just more ranting below this. Do not read if you don't want to see an angry guy writing.)
What the fuck ever. I guess if you PERSONALLY want ME to play through the hide n seek cutscene 400,000 times this is good test design. When you have atleast 90% of the invites you sent playing through it already. This is like Nintendo tier nonsense what the hell.
Could you not record a 6th immersion breaking "this is a test, we need more time" line that just loops every time for Homer and Hecate? Is Underworld Renovations too good for you all of the sudden? Can't come up with a line about Erebrus trees being effortlessly deadly? DO YOU NOT WANT TO TEST THE (current) ENDS OF QUESTLINES????? YOU KNOW, THE PARTS THAT NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH UNTIL THE ACTUAL EARLY ACCESS RELEASE. CAN'T WAIT FOR OBSCURE QUESTLINE CRASHES EVERYONE! LETS GO SUPERGIANTGAMES! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Anyone know what file I have to edit to continue playing on the same file without starting over and losing 3 hours of progress?
I'm literally so pissed off that if this was anyone I didn't love already I'd fucking consider waiting a day to see if I could pirate their game with how fucking shit they are at making decisions.

This feels like a silly thing to read into, but I just realized something about this border from the console releases of Deltarune. It features the Angel from the Delta Rune and only the Angel; the Delta Warriors, the three triangles, aren't present.
The Angel is literally outside of the confines of the game, looming above our window into it.

So I'm someone who low balls the time between Chara and Frisk (team exactly 100 years baby!!![not really]) but what I'm about to say probably works on any of the lower ranges of years
Tumblr media
(screenshot from the Undertale text project) This line doesn't just imply that we're way past 201X, the toy knife is also in the ruins and the first set of soul items (the patience [light blue] soul is the spinning knife phase from the flower fight) The only place that's closed off from the general public, and the oldest, to me implies that it was from the first kid who fell. On top of that, plastic is so incredibly pervasive in the current day that for something to be "rare" by the events of Undertale, it would probably have to be from a kid who fell very soon after Chara did.
If only there was a way to confirm this...Like some sort of sequel game with a human younger than Chara & Asriel (who are presented as being roughly the same age) who's associated with knives and the color light blue...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(both from the Deltarune Text Project)
Oh well! Until that happens, I guess there's no real way to know the order the humans fell in other than totally blind assumptions!
Do you have a timeline for when you believe the humans fell underground (including Chara + Frisk)?
Well not necessarily anything specific. just a few things that mark some VERY wide margings for what i have in mind
Chara fell in 201X, as per the calendar with the circled date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was after the Dreemurrs (and thus monsterkind in tow) already left Home to explore the rest of the mountain and settled in New Home. This is deduced by the wall writings in Waterfall, which bemoan the underground's inaccessibility, saying there's no way a human could ever make its way down there.
Tumblr media
So New Home already existed (or was soon going to be founded, if the plaques were written while the monsters were still exploring) before any human had fallen into the Underground at all.
However! The childhood room in Home is referred to as Asriel's room in both the game files and in the art book (the screenshot is from the Home segment of the book)
Tumblr media
Which would mean Asriel was born close enough in time to the monsters' banishment to be alive when they migrated further into the caverns (and to already have personal interests, like astronomy), and that he was likely snooping around his previous home in the RUINs by chance when he found Chara.
I think Chara spent a LOT of time with the Dreemurrs... but less so chronologically. They likely had reset powers like all humans who fall into the Underground as a consequence of their high DT (from the Undertale Legends of Localization book):
Tumblr media
(I actually think this was the intended implication with their inappropriately light approach to death and pain, ie: laughing in that one videotape about making Asgore sick), so I like to think that, while they obviously stuck around for a long time, they techincally were only with the Dreemurrs for 1, maybe 2 linear years. Which would explain why they seem... hesitant to call them their child/sibling. From their perspective, it was too soon for those words at the time. Either that or Chara was uncomfortable with familiar terms for whatever reason. I tend to ping-pong between the two.
Chara dies and so does Asriel -> Asgore cringe comp -> Toriel bails.... And then bam, the next humans start falling down.
l think the entire affair took centuries in total. Surely a lot of time, enough for most commonplace monsters to have no idea what a human looks like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At LEAST one century, that is, but that is the barest minimum. There's this one line in the date with Sans at MTT resort when he's talking about his first meeting with Toriel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I'm not saying Sans is aware of what's going on or that this makes incanon sense, but knowing UT's propensity for tragically poetic irony, this feels like one of those occasions.
I in my personal chronology, the humans fell either 1 or 2 per century, putting Toriel's exile between 300 and 600 years long.
The order? uhhhhh. dw about it
Thus, Frisk falls down in 2X15. Monsters are freed, everyone is happy. Yay yayay ^_^ yippee. The End.

Why did the entire Undertale fandom collectively decide that Frisk is 3-8 when they repeatedly flirt with people and go on a romantic date with Papyrus (who fully intended to be attracted to them but couldn't and feels as though this is a failing on his part) and even was supposed to have a robot husband at one point in development.
I tried being shitposty and goofy about it a year or two ago but no one took me seriously then so I'm phrasing it as a genuine question this time. Why is everyone so content to pretend this recurring aspect of their character just doesn't exist.

my friend thinks that undertale is a game about pacifism and was talking about how pacifism doesn't work. i feel like that's not what it's about at all, but i don't know how to say it. do you have any thoughts on this?
undertale is not a "game about pacifism", it's an RPG game that deconstructs the violent tropes inherent to its genre. the pacifism undertale deals with isn't the political action, it's the kind that questions the "fight and grind endless enemies with no personality to make yourself stronger" mechanics of its predecessors. and the way it does that is by acknowledging diegetically the power disparity between player and game/NPCs through yet another mechanic through which the player interacts with the game: SAVE files and replayability.
while it's logical for fanworks to explore these types of IRL issues, especially in post pacifist or pre-canon settings, something else that's important to note is that the human and monster dichotomy do NOT represent a realistic, real world conflict between races/ethnic groups. if they were, it would be a fantasy white saviorist story to rival james cameron's bluest, wettest dreams... but they're not. they are once again an analogy. a symbolic metaphor for the power dynamic the game plays on, and it would be unfair to criticize Undertale for its handling of a topic that it's just... straight up not engaging with to begin with.
in a lot of battle RPGs, fighting is not an option: it is the only way you are allowed to engage with the world, and often goes unquestioned. undertale gives you not only an alternative, but DOZENS of reasons why a peaceful resolution to the conflict is favorable withint the story. It also gives you a chance to see what happens anyway, with (nearly) no lasting consequence attached and plenty of secret lore you would miss by playing nice. Now are you going to do the "right" thing by these characters and treat them like your friends... or will you treat Undertale like a game. Its characters like characters. Grow detached to your actions. Like the source of entertainment that, at the end of the day, it is.
That is what Undertale is about.

I made it long enough ago that I won't bother myself with finding it, but I remember making a post about how I was amused by how, during a Twitch stream, when giving an example of how some people over-scrutinize certain aspects of Undertale, Toby mentioned people looking for smiley faces in things. I found this ironic since smiles are actually a pretty important motif in Undertale, all things considered.
At the time, I was frustrated that I couldn't find a clip of this or the stream itself, but now I have! And I've taken the liberty of transcribing this conversation to the best of my ability.
(For context, Toph is one of the hosts of the stream)
Toph: How does that make you feel, when people ascribe their own sort of meanings? Does that make you happy, or does that make you feel a little weird? Like, "Oh wow, people are twisting what I intended." Toby: It's strange when people read something into it that's not good. I don't even wanna say usually people find something that I didn't intend, because there's so much in this game. Basically, a lot of the time it's like- Obviously there are times where people ascribe things to me that that I didn't intend, like they go really far. But I feel like, when they do that, it's kind of what I wanted, to some extent. I wanted to create something that was so "Undertale" that people wouldn't know what was intended and what wasn't and they could just keep looking deeper and keep thinking "Woah, this keeps going, forever?!" So, I guess to some level, to some extent, that sort of thing is validating. It's only bad when they read into it and they get something weird out of it, I guess. Toph: Okay, any specific examples of getting something weird out of it that are not spoiler-y? Maybe not, maybe that answer is just no. Toby: I don't know, there's people that try and find every secret in the game, so they put random things into spectograms or something. So they take a random audio file from the game and they put into a spectogram and it's like- "Look at this guys! It looks like a smiley face! There's a message here!" Or something. Literally every file that you put in there is going to have a smiley face in it, if it's just random static noise. Toph: Right, right, right! If you look deep enough, yeah. I get that's cool, that people are, y'know, willing to look that deep. Toby: Yeah and some of them still believe it. It's like, woah. What that says is that I've made something where people are willing to believe that I would do that on purpose. So, it feels like a credit to me mostly. Toph: That's really funny- I'm just reminded of Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion. And y'know, people have just written articles, upon articles, upon articles, upon essays of all these religous symbols from that game. And he famously was just like, "Y'know what? Honestly, I just think Christian religous symbols just look cool. But hey, if you guys are into that, whatever. Keep theorizing." But that's fine, I guess I'm part of the experience too. Because if you're- You can go into something and if you can find meaning out of it and have it enrich your life, hey that's cool. We take those. Toby: Yeah and I'm not gonna say that there aren't a ludicrous amount of things in this game that were not intended. Because there are a ludicrous amount of things in this game that are intended. Again, who knows where it begins or ends.
