K-Pop Demon Hunters the Real Ending

*Huntr/x, Bobby, and Celine is surrounded by Gwi-Ma's Demons and their brainwashed fans. Even the Saja Boys, who tried to resist, are in his thrall. They are backed against the corner death on the horizon.*

Zoey: Rumi, what happened?!

Rumi: Gwi-Ma cheated.

Gwi-Ma: CHEATED?! Hold it pretty boys!

*The Saja Boys immediately stand down*

Gwi-Ma: Oh grow up! Whaddya think this is, a game of kick-ball on the playground? You never had a chance to defeat me FOOLS! And do ya know why?!

Mira: Because you cheated?

Gwi-Ma: ...NO! Not because I cheated! Because I'm an evil genius! And you're just a kid! A stupid half-breed-kid!

*Gwi-Ma begins laughing evilly and his thralls begin laughing robotically along with him, demons and fans alike*

Rumi: ...I guess you're right, Gwi-Ma. I am just a half-breed kid.

Gwi-Ma: Of courrse I'm right. Okay Saja Boys, time to kill-

Rumi: And you know, I've been through a lot in the last two weeks, three hours and twenty seven and a half seconds. And if I've learned anything in that time it's that you are, who you are.

Gwi-Ma: ...Sure, whatever. Okay Saja Boys, time to-

Rumi, pointing at Celine: And no amount of conditional motherly love.

Celine: *looks down, ashamed*

Rumi, pointing at Bobby: Or managerial approval.

Bobby: *still has no idea what's going on*

Rumi: Or some other third thing, will ever make me more than what I really am inside. A half-demon!

Gwi-Ma: That's great, now get back against the wall.

Rumi, pulling a microphone out of nowhere: BUT THAT'S OKAY!

Gwi-Ma: Eh? What's goin' on?

Rumi: Because I did what everyone said a half-demon COULDN'T do! I turned the Honmoon gold! And I made it to the number one spot! And I saved my friends' lives!

Gwi-Ma: All-right we get the point!

Rumi: So yeah, I'm a half-breed! *the stage begins to darken, a spotlight from nowhere shinning on Rumi as fog begins to drift in* And I'm also a workaholic! And a Type-A personality! And a gigantic stick in the mud!

*there's an explosion of Honmoon power sending the thralls flying back, revealing the girls in classic rock outfits, Rumi playing a magical twelve-string guitar. They rise into the air, an aura of rainbow light coming off them*

I randomly remembered the tweet about someone bitching about how Wish doesn’t fit with “Disney Lore” and lying about how the film was supposed to make some Disney Cinematic Universe (basically someone said the references to other Disney films in this Disney film PAYING HOMAGE TO DISNEY FILMS was actually a prediction like the goat goes on to create Zootopia and Asha is Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother and other nakedly stupid takes) and I had what I call a “Pothead Clarity Moment” (I don’t do drugs, this is just a reference to that thing in shows and movies where the characters get high and they say some random shit that they think is deeply profound or intelligent, like the “If your leg got cut off would it hurt” meme and that scene from the Ted streaming show where Ted realizes the song, the Monster Mash, is based off a dance of the same name, but it isn’t the song the monsters were dancing to and no one knows what the real Monster Mash song the monsters were dancing to actually was.)

So I randomly said to myself “Fuck it, we ball” and came up with a fun idea for Star. Not just Star, the character from wish, I mean Star, THE Disney Star, taking the form of a cartoony baby to an older woman to its regular appearance to our normie human eyes as a normal star. So let’s say all these films ARE connected, what does that make Star and the fact they look different when people refer to them. My main points will be Wish’s Star, Pinnochio’s Blue Fairy, and Princess and the Frog’s Evangeline, all three are different in some way, Star’s an energetic gremlin baby, Blue Fairy is a wiser older woman, and we don’t see anything of Evangeline but we know that Ray loves her dearly. None of these depictions make sense in a connected universe right? WRONG. Technically.

Vocaloid reference here: there’s a character in the song “Alice of Human Sacrifice”, it’s central villain known as The Wonderland Dream that lures in dreamers and permanently traps and lets their bodies in the outside world rot as said dreamer creates the world around them and allows the dream to live on permanently. I like to focus on the part where the dreamers create its world and allow it to live on, this is where the existence of Star in all their forms comes in.

Star (though we don’t know how they began so let’s assume Asha is the one who first awakened them) exists through the power of wishes, their existence is prided on being this symbol of hope people call upon in their darkest hour and give their deepest desire to, and I think these dreamers are also what form their existence (namely how those around them will see them).

Star is a bombastic energy ball of joy and wonder to match with Asha’s own boundless and determined spirit. He may seem childish and overly-excitable, but he’s what she needed, giving her the push to fight an oppressive regime when she’s left all alone with the truth and doesn’t know how exactly one small girl can stand to a bigger man with more power and influence than her.

Star’s help when no one else could or even would listen to her pushes Asha to go from working in the shadows to get two wishes back to picking a fight more openly and getting them all back, ripping the cogs out of a corrupt system and the people working to fix it and replace these outdated, crumbling gears with new, fresher ones. This time, Rosas truly becomes a kingdom of wishes, which are granted not by a greedy ruler who makes you pray to him for the chance of potentially having them come true, but by the people putting in the time and effort to bring them to life in spite of the odds and the long journey ahead.

Star takes the form of the indomitable spirit everyone, especially Asha, has in order to help make her wish come true. Asha WANTED to free the wishes by just stealing them back, but what she NEEDED was to break the system so these dreams could never be stolen again.

The Blue Fairy is DEFINITELY a far-cry from my little hot gas baby of goblin energy, and that’s because of Geppetto and Pinnochio. Gepetto probably has an idea of this wise, old spirit that makes wishes come true and in his yearning to have a child of his own, decides to shoot his shot and make a wish. I mean, wishes are just fairytales, right? It’s silly, but it’s not like he’s gonna gain or lose anything from indulging in a little bit of childlike whimsy… except his childlike whimsy calls the Star’s attention.

Given Geppetto and his the wish he made, the Star takes the form of a wiser, older figure fitting the idea of a wise spirit that makes hopes and dreams come true, but they’re also feminine, gentle and kind, like something of a mother figure perfect for Pinocchio as he’s a wooden boy with zero clue about the world cause he was literally born yesterday. She grants gives Pinnochio life as well as instructions for how to fulfill his dad’s wish; all he needs to do is prove himself brave, truthful, and unselfish, and someday he’ll be a real boy. She even gives him a conscience to help him be good in the form of Jiminy Cricket.

She’s not around for a lot of the movie, but she does show up to scold him for trying to lie his way out of trouble and helps him when he tells the truth, while making it clear that he has to be good because she won’t always be around to help him and she shows up after Pinocchio escapes nearly turning into a jackass. She’s always there for him when he’s learnt his lesson, rewarding him for being good compared to the other adult characters like the Coachman or Stromboli or “Honest” John, who all allow him to enjoy a cheap thrill or two, but at the cost of a horrible punishment following his short-lived fun.

Her greatest reward comes from Pinocchio throwing his own life on the line to save his father and their pets because all he wants is to be back home with them, and in a cruel twist of fate, he gets it, laid on his bed as the family grieves over him. Having learned his lessons, changing and apologizing when he did wrong, and jumping in to protect others, even if there might not be anything for him to gain from it, the Blue Fairy allows him to become the real boy he was on the inside.

Star takes the form of a motherly figure in Pinocchio’s life, stepping in when he needs help and showing up once again when she needs to scold him for trying to lie, but rewarding him for doing good and giving him and his father her greatest gift once he proves himself worthy. Pinnochio WANTED to be a real boy, but what he NEEDED was to be a good boy. He got to interact with plenty of real, flesh and bone, human people, but a lot of them tended to be jackasses deep down inside (the Pleasure Island segment literally shows bad and troublesome children turning into jackasses).

And of course, we come to the crux of my argument. You might’ve noticed that I’ve emphasized WANT and NEED in this post, and if you have, you’re probably a Princess and the Frog fan and you remember damn well what Mama Odie said:

There’s a lot you can say about how messy the writing of PatF is, and believe me, it’s a mess. This great lesson about being blind to what you need is just the movie taking ANOTHER DETOUR to pressure Tiana into getting married and having children in spite of the fact that Tiana is young and she makes it clear that she look for love and family later once she gets her business running because you tell me what’s wrong with a married woman having to take care of a family AND run her establishment.

But the idea of WANTING something without really knowing what you NEED is a good and important one, and it’s in Wish and Pinnochio. The characters really want to achieve their goal

Asha: Free the wishes of Rosas so everyone gets a fair shot to make them come true.

Pinocchio: Become a real boy for his papa.

But neither of them understood what they needed.

Asha: Her wish could never come true so long as the system remained in place. The possession of the wishes weren’t the broken piece, the system where someone’s wish and emotions could be taken from them and the lying conman convincing people just how good it is to forget all wants and desires and remain complacent and docile until the 1% miraculously gives you all you desire was the broken piece.

Pinocchio: He’s already a real boy on the inside, but unless he acts like it and remains honest and kindhearted, his cold wooden exterior will forever hide his true self.

The Star is what makes those wishes come true by showing them what they need and the characters end up taking action thanks to all that they learned on the journey and the star guiding them and placing the tools in front of them.

Asha: Has every chance to run away and hide and let Magnifico continue hurting Rosas, especially since no one will listen to her. Instead decides to finally be brave and speak fully with her chest thanks to Star’s own determination and push for her to do the right thing.

Pinnochio: Could keep lying, doing what he pleases, and reject Jiminy and the idea of being a real boy even at his own expense (his lying makes his nose grow so big it practically becomes the branch of a tree right down to having leaves and a bird’s nest in it, and him dicking around in Pleasure Island nearly turns him into a donkey). Instead accepts that what he was doing was wrong and decides that he wants to do the right thing and be good thanks to the Blue Fairy scolding him for his lying and always rewarding/coming back for him when he does good deeds or learns his lesson.

The Star takes on the form of people who need them, the encouraging voice on their shoulder, a gut feeling humanized, a call to action, and there are always gonna be dreamers, calling upon them, shaping the way they look and act for any given wish and situation…. So how about someone who doesn’t really have a wish?

Evangeline is such a special case, she’s literally a star while Ray serves as the second one to her right (AND STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNIN—) and the whole movie, Ray’s a happy little light bug that loves her and makes it clear how much he does, even joining her in the night sky in his death. We see the Star… as a Star. There’s no special form, they don’t seem to speak to Ray… but he speaks to her, and sings about how much he loves her, and he adores her like she’s a real, tangible person standing right in front of him.

Given how Ray joins them in the night sky, I wanna say that Star and Ray are in love with each other. Ray was probably the first dreamer they met who didn’t really have a dream, and through whatever happened, Ray and them fell in love. It’s probably why (if the Disney films were ever in some deep, cinematic universe in some way) the star that we normally see take some kind of form from an energetic ball of gas to a wise, kindly woman doesn’t have any personification (because in both Wish and Pinnochio, the form Star takes is seen by everyone).

Ray loves them no matter what gender they are, nor what creature they are, nor what form they’ll take. Star will always be his Evangeline, and so Star doesn’t try to arrive dressed up in a certain way or holding an appearance. They remain a star, watching over Ray until it’s time for him to join them in the night sky.

FINAL NOTE: Do I believe the Disney Cinematic Universe is an actual, plausible thing? NO. Straight up no. These are silly ass kids films with deep heart and a lot of morals and themes to unpack, and this post was essentially me unpacking two: one being wanting something only to find out what you need and the other being the unrelenting, unconditional support of love.

A lot of Disney protagonists have wishes and dreams and a lot of them are based on wants (Judy wants to be a respectable police officer, Cinderella wants a nice night out at the ball, Mirabel wants to be acknowledged by her family, Lewis wants to see his old mom, etc.). I remember seeing a post about how Wish’s Fairy Godmother thing works because Fairy Godmother’s simply give you the tools you need but it’s up to you to use them, and I agree with it, but I want to add another tool that writing out this post made me think about.

Fairy Godmothers like Cinderella’s can Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo up physical tools, but they can also give the characters a need in some way, usually related to the status quo, and the character can always reject it and keep the status quo or they can change it (Zootopia is run by stereotypes and racism and Judy nor Nick will ever know respect or kindness so long as the system is designed to hunt down or ridicule animals like treating predators like Nick as monsters or prey like Judy as weaklings and thus it needs to be replaced, Cinderella needs to get away from her abusive family and one nice night is all she needs to find someone someone who loves her dearly and wants to help remove her from this stifling and cruel environment, Mirabel isn’t the only suffering in the family and they all need to work out their emotions and traumas and love and accept themselves and each other as a true family without keeping up appearances of perfection and cracking walls, Lewis will never know happiness if he keeps living in the past and shutting everyone out so what he needs is to KEEP MOVING FORWARD—)

The wishing Star of Disney fame is a symbol of… well, wishes, and those wishes are a symbol of wants and desires and LIGHT. Light that washes away the darkness shrouding everything, revealing what is needed to keep said light burning bright and undeterred. No matter how many villains, or nasty wishes, or cracks in the road, the star continues to soar and glide over the castle, casting its light over everything and shining brighter than every other star around it and making its presence known.

And Ray and Evangeline are just cute and the idea of some guy in Louisiana falling in deep love with an astral Deity built off the hopes and dreams of countless thousands right down to just never needing to see them in some kind of physical form because their presence being there with him is enough is cute. I’ll support MtF trans Star x Ray over piss colored Jack Frost x bastardized version of Asha any day.

Moral of this post: I need to stop staying up late, I write the weirdest shit when I do.
