Frederik IX and tattoos
King Frederik IX was King of Denmark from 1947 - 1972 and was known as "The Sailor King", but he was also known as the tattooed king. In 1951 a secret picture of the danish king was leaked and published in the american magazine "LIFE Magazine". On the pictures you can see some of the kings many tattoos.
Danish broadcasting service DR made a 3D figure, in 2019, of the king, where you can see where the tattoos were on his body and what they looked like. DR got the help from tattoo artists, old movieclips and Princess Benedikte, the kings middle child.
It is very likely that King Frederik got his first tattoos on a trip to Asia, at the age of 31. His first tattoo is a 35 cm long dragon on his left overarm.
He also got a dragon on his right underarm.
The King was a sailor and back then it was very normal for a sailor to have some tattoos and it makes sense that the King got his first tattoos on a voyage. You can tell how much he loved the sea from his tattoos.
On his left underarm you could find an anchor and a bird. The anchor was believed to be a classic anchor that sailors got, but upon closer inspection they found that it is actually the Kings own monogram from when he was crown prince. The bird is most likely a sparrow. Birds are special for sailors since the show when land is near after a long voyage.
Frederik’s monogram as crown prince
Birds were popular with the King, perhaps because they also symbolise freedom. These two could be found on his right overarm.
On the inside of the Kings underarms, you could find a dragon on the right arm and a fox on the left.
The Kings last tattoo is another dragon and got it tattooed in a shady part of London by George Burchett. He got it tattooed by the age of 50 in 1949, two years after he became king.
As you can tell tattoos was a big part of the Kings life and it was his love of tattoos that laid the foundation for one of the danish laws. In 1966, it became illegal for people to tattoo anyone under the age of 18, but it also became illegal to get tattooed on the hands, neck and in the face. This was probably the government’s method to ensure that the King would not get any visible tattoos.

Crown Prince Frederiks Baptism (Newspaper article)
“When the prince was baptised. “
“Bishop Erik Jensen baptises the prince while the heir presumptive, princess Margrethe, watches. In the background, King Frederik, Prince Henrik, Countess André de Monpezat and Queen Anne-Marie.”
“At a quarter past two, monday, the excitement was triggered. At this time, the royal priest, Bishop Erik Jensen, asked the heir presumptive, princess Margrethe, about what her first born, Denmark’s next king was going to be called. The answer was: Frederik André Henrik Christian.
The Baptism in Holmens Church, that was decorated with flowers, was beautiful and simple - after the royal couples wish. The only one who could not control himself, was the prince, the center of attention,”
“When his mother carried him to the baptism, he smiled and it seemed like he was in a great mood, but he cried a bit later under the actual baptism. Although not when he got his name. He was quiet and listened carefully. Shortly thereafter he lost his patience again and cried, but towards the end of the ceremony, the good mood returned as he laid on his mother’s lab and played with one hand while his maternal grandfather, King Frederik, moved watched.”
“Beautiful and simple. “
“The beautiful and simple was a red thread through the entire ceremony. The church was decorated with flowers, alternating with red roses, pink and yellow snapdragons and white jasmines, and on the alter table, was placed blue delphiniums. The apse was decorated with the heir presumptives favourite flower, white daisies. While the almost 500 guests arrived, the organist, Grethe Krogh Christensen, played works of Dieterich Buxtehude og Johann Sebastian Bach. The men was in dark clothes, the women in simple dresses or suits.”
“The simpel in the ceremony also showed itself by every guests, except for the royal family, had to find their own seats in the church. By 1.30 most of the guests had arrived. They suffered under the heat and used the distributed baptismal programs as fans. Twenty minutes to two, Hereditary Prince Knud and Princess Caroline-Mathilde arrived at the church with friends to the heir presumptives family. After that the royal family arrived.”
“The King was dressed in dark clothes, Queen Ingrid wore a dark turquoise suit consisting of a dress, coat and hat with a wide, open shadow. Queen Anne-Marie wore a green suit, leaning towards the apple green colour, and a green pillbox hat, and princess Benedikte wore a green dress in silk and a hat, while king Gustav Adolf VI, King Konstantin and Prince Richard, Count de Monpezat and Prince George was in dark clothes. Prince Henrik’s mother, Countess de Monpezat was in a dark navy blue suit.”
“In his mother’s arms”
“Only a few seconds past two, while the sun peeked over the clouds, the doors opened and to the tones of Händels march in D minor, the royal couple entered the church with their firstborn. The Prince was dressed in a baptismal gown in lace sewn til King Frederik VIII’s and Queen Louises firsteborn, Prince Christian. He looked pleased in his mother’s, Princess Margrethes arms. The heir presumptive was dressed in a light turquoise suit in silk consisting of a dress, coat and hat, while Prince Henrik was in dark clothes. He looked serious, but the heir presumptive was smiling. They were followed by the bishop. “
“Shortly after them, the nurse, who takes care of the little Prince, arrived. She was shown a good seat so she could follow the ceremony. The ceremony started with the congregation singing the hymn “Praise the Lord”, whereafter the bishop did the actual baptism. The hair presumptive carried, accompanied by Queen Anne-Marie, her child to the Baptismal font, while King Frederik and Queen Ingrid, visible touched, watched. After the Baptism, Copenhagens boy choir, under guidance of Mogens Wöldike, sang "Sicut Cervus Decideret” og the congregation sang “All the things, God have done”. The Bishop read the scripture and made the blessing.”
“When the newly baptised prince - apparently in good spirits - in his mother’s arms together with his father and the royal family left the church, J.P.E. Hartmanns fantasy in F minor played. Outside the church, many people had placed themselves to get a glimpse of the newborn and the royal family. The royal family and a bunch of invited guests drove to Amalienborg, where a reception was going to be held. Tonight the baptism will be celebrated with a party at Amalienborg with the closest family.”
