was talking to my sister the other day about niall’s music and we started talking about how deeply he gives his mental and physical to the object of his affections and so obviously i brought up ‘cross your mind’ and ‘you could start a cult’ to explain this but it got me thinking about how those two songs alone exist within the same theme but are complete opposites!
‘cross your mind’ opens with “it’s your world i wanna live in, its your ocean i wanna swim in / it’s your show and i’m just watching, losing you is not an option” and the first two lines are so similar to YCSAC because he is essentially conveying the same idea that he would join a cult for them, but bam! the next two lines follow and the bubble is burst for the listener and we go from being on the journey of his romance to an omniscient presence. “losing you is not an option” automatically indicates that this relationship is toxic, and of course the rest of the song just doubles down on the pain he’s taking on “tell me that you love me, but I know you're out there running wild / give me all the pain, give me everything, don't hold back, don't hold back” but at the same time niall in the song doesn’t even recognize or care that it’s toxic, because he’s willing to do anything for them. it’s such a manic story against an upbeat production and non-indicative title
WHEREAS!!!! ‘you could start a cult’ is a TITLE! you already know it’s going to be about some crazy shit!! but it’s not🥺 it’s the sweetest love song, that despite is of course putting his partner on a pedestal, so much of it is about reciprocation! “to wake up by your side is all i wanna do / oh, i'll follow you 'til there's no tomorrow, i'll follow you 'til there's no tomorrow” there is that to-the-bone devotion in it, but in CYM, niall is eagerly taking on the pain without anyone committing to him, whereas in YCSSC, niall is singing about committing to one person until the end of time and the world is swallowed by the sun because there is no pain with them… AND I THINK THAT’S BEAUTIFUL!!!
i go through all the dove pink ballet Audrey Hepburn-worshipping blogs and gleefully scroll past the thin white women 95 times out of 100. i hope more of you learn that there’s more to life, more to beauty than Lily rose depp or Ariana grande. i hope you broaden your aesthetic horizons and show up for bodies that look different.
does anyone remember that 2000s movie with james mcavoy and christina ricci where she was s girl with a pig nose and he fell in love with her anyway UGH i was obsessed as a child
