Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell Changes to the Driving Laws Beginning September 1, there will be penalties for driving while holding a phone to your ear or in your hand. For the rest of August, if you neglect to have your hands on the steering wheel, you will simply be given a warning. Of course there are alternatives to holding your phone to your ear. You can use Bluetooth, hands-free, or speakerphone. Actually, South Carolina is one of the last states to enact this new precaution for safety while driving. Please follow the law. Miss Jeannie does not want to have to bake a cake for you with a file in it. Enjoy the rest of your summer and as for this rain, at least I don't hear anyone bellyaching about having to water the lawn. Love y'all. Miss Jeannie prays for you every single day!
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester NEW OCONEE CREEK SCHOOL TO BE DEDICATED - (The following story was in the May 12, 1915 Keowee Courier) -There will be a school rally and pic nic at Oconee Creek School house on Friday, May 21st. Several addresses will be delivered. The speaking will begin promptly at 10.30 o'clock. . .The welcome address will be made by Superintendent of Education T.A. Smith; response by Major Wm. J. Stribling. This will be followed by an address on education by State Superintendent of Education J.E. Swearingen. . .At 1.30 the laying of the cornerstone of Oconee Creek School building, by Hickory Camp, No. 586, W.O.W. (Woodmen of the World) of the New Hope section, will take place. . .The chief speaker for the occasion will be Rev. D. Weston Hiott, of Central. . .Refreshments will be served by committee. . .Music will be furnished by R.W. Grubbs, W.M. Murphree and others. . .Come and bring well-filled baskets. A nice time is in store for all. . .Footnote written by Ashton Hester: For anyone who might be wondering, in the first paragraph "pic nic" was the correct spelling back then. They soon began merging the two syllables into "picnic."

Oconee County Farm Crawl 9/20 9am-5pm - Visit Oconee County’s finest local farms and homesteads connecting with the people who grow your food, raise animals, and steward the land you love. You will meet at one of three local check-in locations (Salem, Walhalla, or Westminster) on Saturday, September 20th, between 8:30am and 9:30am. You will receive a map and descriptions of each farm when you check in. The Farm Crawl is a self-directed event where the participants drive themselves from farm to farm. You choose what farms to visit and in what order. You also choose how much time to spend at each farm. Each farm or homestead will have its own activities to offer on the day of the event, which may include farm products for sale, tours, Q&As, demos, and maybe even a hayride or two. There are two ending points to the crawl, where you can share a drink with a farmer, enjoy some live music and grab a bite to eat. Litter information Did you know if you are a Good Samaritan and pick up litter anywhere and recover evidence to report to the authorities—-you have tampered with evidence and they cannot prosecute. You must call to speak with the litter officer at Oconee Law Enforcement at 864-638-4111. The office has to come out to recover the litter evidence. LM

EDITOR: I often tell people that I love retirement. But at the same time I tell them to never retire, because then you will work yourself to death for free! The main thing whether you are working full time, part-time, or retired, you do need to volunteer. God is calling you. Helping one another or a good cause is very rewarding. God blesses us when we use talents he has given us to help others. God will give you the delights of your heart. Psalm 37:4 states "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." If we love the Lord, our desires should line-up with his! LRM

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell How Many Ancestors do you have ? Let’s start with YOU. You have 2 parents, grandparents, and 32 great, great, great grandparents. If we go back 12 generation YOU have 2,048 ggggggggg grandparents. If we go back 85 generations, everyone is related, and we come from upper Africa. ( The Garden of Eden?) ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester TAMASSEE-SALEM TEACHER STATE PRESIDENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION - (The following story was in the April 19, 1995 Keowee Courier). . .Ned Shuler of Tamassee, and a physics and physical science teacher at Tamassee-Salem High School, has been elected president of the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina (EEASC). . .The EEASC is a non-profit organization with a leadership role in natural resources conservation and environmental awareness education. . .Agencies and organizations cooperating in these educational efforts include the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, and Bowater, Inc., with representatives on the EEASC Board. . .Numerous other environmental agencies and organizations, industries, and colleges and universities also cooperate. . .EEASC provides a forum and resource for educators, researchers, agency and industry personnel, and concerned citizens; promotes and assists in developing and improving environmental education programs and courses; and functions as a clearing house for materials and ideas to help promote the teaching of environmental education courses. . .Membership is open to anyone with a desire to promote the study, care, conservation and wise use of our natural resources.

HOMEMADE is Best: Figs are in! Get creative! Have you tried making a Fig Crisp? My friend Lois experimented and let me taste the results which were superb! Try this: Line the bottom of a baking dish with fresh washed figs ( minus the stems ) and in another bowl put about a cup of brown sugar and 1 and1/2 cups of whole oats. Toss in some spices like cinnamon and cloves. Mix and place on top of the fresh figs. Then put dollops of butter all over the top. Oven Bake at 325 until bubbly and brown. Enjoy with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream or just a cold glass of cold milk!

EDITOR: I am welcoming the rain and the cooler refreshing temperatures! The ground needs the moisture and we needed a respite from the heat! Last week Ashton Hester Recalls reported on two major floods in our area in 1903 and 1915. History reminds us that we cannot prevent a flood catastrophe, but that we should be prepared, knowing these things can happen without warning. My favorite part of reading the history was seeing family names in our area that are still are here today: Burgess, Grant, Madden, Alexander, Cannon, Wiggington, Nix, Talley, Lusk, and Perry. I am reminded that we don't leave! We live in God’s country! LR Martin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell JODEAN ALEXANDER - A Life of Days in Goodness Spent “She loved life and she loved people. She expressed her kindness through adopting every stranger she met as a new friend. Her cooking was a labor of love, and her coconut cakes were a symbol of time well spent and her generosity. Jodean found peace and beauty in her garden. She shared these blooms with friends and neighbors. A proud and active member in the Eastern Star, she lived life, rooted in faith, service, and love for everyone she met.” My friend Jodean will be remembered as a true treasure of the Cheohee Valley. Let’s never forget Jodean. Let’s keep her spirit alive by showing our neighbors our love through action. Miz Jeannie loves you all!
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester TRAILWAYS BUS DRIVER HONORED FOR TWO MILLION MILES OF SAFE DRIVING - (The following story was in the February 18, 1987 Keowee Courier). . .Harold Crowe, who was raised in the Tamassee-Salem area and now resides in Walhalla, has been driving buses for Trailways for nearly 28 years, and he recently received a Two Million Miles Safe Driving Award from the company. . .He began driving for Trailways in March 1959. Working out of Walhalla, he would drive from there to Anderson and back three times a day, departing from the Piedmont Service Station. . .He was on a seven-day-a-week schedule, but on Sundays he would only make two trips. . ."Once in a while I'd get a day off, if somebody from Anderson wanted to come over here and drive," he recalled. . .Since then he has worked out of Columbia and Asheville, and he presently drives from Anderson to Charlotte and back six days a week. He leaves Anderson at 8:15 a.m. and arrives back at 3:45 p.m. . .Although there is no longer any bus service out of Walhalla, or anywhere else in Oconee County, he recalls that the bus used to be an important means of transportation locally. . ."Along toward the weekend the bus would fill up, sometimes with standing room only," he noted. . .Although his Safe Driving Award is for two million miles, he has since accumulated approximately 30,000 additional miles. . .Mr. Crowe's wife, the former Margaret Dover, was raised in the Picket Post Community

HOMEMADE is Best: Cut out the packages! There is no better food than homemade food! Try making this No Bake Nourishing Snack or Treat filled with Fiber-Protein– and heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids. Start with a base of Natural Peanut butter or almond butter and a little Honey. Add a little Vanilla extract (not artificial). Stir, then add whole oats and start forming a thick mixture adding other ingredients such as - chocolate chips, natural coconut flakes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and/or flax seeds. I have been experimenting on the right texture. Place in the refrigerator. Have the kids help make their own healthy treats. It is fun eating the experimental treats. And they are easy to pack on the go. LRM

EDITOR: I am not sure why I keep my ATT phone line. Maybe to feel be connected to the earth. But when I get phone calls from only solicitors, and people who cannot pronounce my name, and want to purchase property, I want to go live like Jeremiah Johnson. I actually sat down and watched that old Robert Redford classic recently. People were mean then, and still mean today. I’m not sure why people have to be mean. Mankind has shared this same wonderful, beautiful earth for thousands of years. We might not be so mean if we could all realize we are connected and loved by the Creator of Creation. LR Martin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell A PROVOCATIVE QUOTATION “If life is compared to a thriving business, love is the currency that makes it successful.” Is cash the determinant you use for measuring life? This is a material world. A pile of dollars provides families with a house in a safe neighborhood, emergency funds, the best medical care, and tuition at prestigious universities. The second part of the quotation states love is the currency that makes life successful . How many families (mine included )set sights on all the trappings: new house, new car, nice vacations. However, these choices required two full-time jobs for the parents and lots of overtime. In retrospect. LOVE SHOULD BE THE PREMIER CURRENCY FOR OUR LIVES. THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS PROVIDE BENCHMARKS FOR SUCCESS USING LOVE. AS A CURRENCY, IF OUR FAMILIES ARE NOT SCHOOLED IN CHRISTIAN LOVE, DOES ANYTHING ELSE REALLY MATTER? Think about it. ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester LITTLE RIVER AREA DEVASTATED BY HEAVY RAINS, FLOODING IN 1915 - (The following report was in the "Little River Notes" column in the July 7, 1915 Keowee Courier). . .Crops in this section were looking very well up to the time of the recent hard rains and high waters. The upland now, however, is cut into gullies, the roads are torn up, bridges washed away, and the water mills have been put out of business. . .J.H. Wigington's mill race is gone; J.B. Alexander's mill race is partly gone; G.A. Harrison's mill race is gone. . .The Grant bridge at Harrison's mill is damaged; Craven's Creek bridge is torn up; Little River bridge damaged. The Perry bridge (30 feet long and well fastened together, the sills 10 x 20) was washed some quarter of a mile down the river, remaining together, and lodged on Mack Nix's place. The Perry bridge, on Smeltzer creek, was lodged in Little River at the lower part of J.W. Cannon's farm. It also held together. The Madden bridge is gone, as is also the Talley bridge. The ford at R.W. Burgess's place is washed out and the Lusk ford is full of quicksand; impossible to ford. . .The corn crop is almost ruined. It might, under favorable circumstances, make a third or fourth of a crop at best. . .The water was not as high as it was in 1903. . .(Footnote written by Ashton Hester: The 1903 flood was legendary for the enormous amount of damage it caused in areas along Oconee County water courses.)

A publication of Tamassee-Salem High School Spring 1989 is a magazine published by the TS High students under the editor/teacher Den Lathan. Sugar Cane, an article by Eric Collins tells of his visit with well-known old-timers named Doma Cantrell and Burley Brown where he witnessed the making of sorghum. Doma explained, “ When the green juice is squeezed out of the can, it runs through a pipe into the first trough. It has about 8 or 9 troughs to go through. When the green juice is poured into the cooking troughs, you have to skim off all the green foam. You strain your good sorghum out. When it boils in big brown blubbers, you know it’s ready. Doma also “recommends a glass of green cane juice for what ails you.”

I wanted to see the play Pilgrim’s Progress and was amazed at the talent and production performed at this beautiful Christian theatre. ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester BETHEL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PLANS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION - (The following story was in the April 5, 1905 Keowee Courier). . .It has been decided by the session of Bethel Presbyterian church to celebrate the centennial of the church August 9 and 10 of this year. This church was organized in 1805. A program of centennial activities will be published soon. . .A committee was appointed consisting of T.M. Kelley, Dr. W.K. Sharp, J.F. Neville and J.W. Holleman to procure funds to purchase a monument on which shall be inscribed the names of all the pastors and officers of the church during the past century. . .We invite the people of the county generally and those of other counties and States to attend our Centennial. . .It is proposed by several families to erect tents and spend the night on the church ground. It appears that this is going to be a popular feature of the occasion. As many as so desire may bring tents to camp on the ground. Those who do not will be most cordially and heartily welcomed into the homes of our people. . .So, let all come. . .Signed: R.L. OCONEE-A publication of Tamassee-Salem High School Spring 1989 is a magazine published by the TS High students under the editor/teacher Den Lathan. A feature story by student Michael Goetting on artist Gale McKinley, tells of her teaching years associated with T-S school. She had a “flair for the unusual.” She painted murals of Native Americans, wildlife, and nature scenes on the walls. These murals are intact on the walls of the auditorium now called the Eagles Nest Art Center. LRM

Church News Salem Methodist Church 520 Church St down town Salem. Sunday School and breakfast at 9AM and Worship Service 10:30AM. Community Women’s Bible Study on Mondays at 10AM. We will be resuming our prayer group on Monday, July 14. We will meet at the church, in the parlor (upstairs) from 11:15 - 12:15. EDITOR: I feel so blessed to have been reared in our small part of the world. We have good people, strong faith, and hard workers. Values that were shared around kitchen table at suppertime. Most of us were not born with the silver spoon mentality. Our table was placed with good strong stainless and the china was from points our mom earned with S&H green stamps or from grocery store special promotions. Mom served “farm to table food” that is now seen as a luxury for some today. Our house was small. But our life was big! I would not trade it for the world! The old saying is true, “Love grows in small places.” Then go share it in the world. LR Martin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell Miz Jeannie Learned a Lesson Some acquaintances from the northern climes are threatening to visit me again this year. They believe that Myrtle Beach is an accessory to the state of Ohio. It seems as South Carolina is being invaded by everyone in Cincinnati, East Liverpool, and Dayton. Gentle readers I know that I am spunky and adorable and my actual age is far beyond my youthful presentation. Perhaps that is why the Kellys expect on me to wait on them hand and foot while they never even bring me a bucket of buckeyes! OK. Pay attention now, this is the heart of the story. So I call the editor,“ Lynne, you have got to help me out! The odious Kellys are threatening to visit me again! Please call them and tell them that I am on a cruise!” To which Lynne replies, “ Jeannine I not very good at lying. Now, how else can I help you?” Then I said, “ Oh it is just a little lie. Jesus is not even going to count it.” She replied again, “ I am very bad at lying.” Then I thought about Lynne growing up. What an amazing family she must have had. Love you!! Miz Jeannie
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester EAGLE BASKETBALL PLAYER WAS REGION "PLAYER OF THE YEAR" IN 1994-95 - (The following story was in the March 8, 1995 Keowee Courier). . .Tamassee-Salem's Josh Gibson was named the Region 1-A boys' basketball Player of the Year for the 1994-95 season. . .Two other Eagles, Chris Martin and Kevin Madden, were also named to the All-Region team, and Hal Dunlap was named Coach of the Year. . .Sue Carpenter of the Lady Eagles was named to the girls' All-Region team. . .The Tamassee-Salem boys finished the season with a 19-6 overall record including 11-3 in region games, which was good for a second-place finish behind McCormick.

EDITOR: This came across my phone today as I prepare The Old Salem Post: “Blue Ridge Electric Alert! Consecutive days of extreme temperatures are driving high energy demand in our service territory. Power generators are reporting very limited reserves. You can help protect the electric grid and avoid possible temporary outages by conserving nonessential energy usage.” This begs the question: “Why does Oconee County continue to have the Welcome Mat out for more development when we are having problems meeting the demands of today?” LRMartin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell Invest IT Wisely Really, what we are is what we do with our TIME. If you are lucky. your life on the average, will give you 79 years on Planet Earth. According to my research, you will spend about 28 years sleeping. Eating and drinking take up four years. You will spend approximately 115 days laughing and 30 days crying. Fifteen solid years of your life will be spent working at your job. The average Joe or Jane spends eleven years watching TV. Three years go by looking in your closet and deciding what to wear. Eight years, on average, are spent praying, meditating, and attending religious services. Every day we have to make many choices. Who are the recipients of your precious time? Family? Friends? Pets? Bosses? Causes? If you do not decide how to use your time, somebody else will. When Allan was in first grade, all of the mothers competed for volunteer jobs at the elementary school. The good jobs were taken quickly: reading tutor, hamster and fish tank attender, Tuesday Tootsie Pop Provider. The job that was left for me was: Mother-Who-Lines-Up- Kids-To-Eat-Lunch. Basically that job entailed showing up from 11 to 11:30, placing the wiggly, hungry kiddos in line, and SHHOOSHing them for chatting. My whole day was focused on my volunteer job. What made it worse was that the big fat bossy school secretary would fuss at me for not being on time or for my "creative parking," thus requiring me to park two blocks away from the school. ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester Here is a tragic story from 1935, which some of today's Salem residents might recall hearing about: FIRE DESTROYED SALEM STORE AND POST OFFICE IN 1935 - (The following story was in the March 6, 1935 Keowee Courier). . .Fire from a heater in the store of Postmaster Dewey Green, at Salem, in which the post office was located, destroyed the building, and Mr. Green was badly burned upon the hands, legs and body. . .(The following follow-up story was in the March 13, 1935 Keowee Courier). . .SALEM POSTMASTER DIES FROM BURNS. . .The death of George Dewey Green, postmaster at Salem, has cast a gloom over the village. Mr. Green, who had been postmaster here for the past ten years, was badly burned several days ago when the stove in the post office exploded. He was 33 years old. . .The explosion caused the loss of the post office building and all equipment, and eventually the life of Mr. Green.

EDITOR: It is sad to see division in our country over illegal immigrants who have come to America. I am certain many illegal immigrants are wonderful people. It is always those few who ruin it for everyone. My thoughts are with the parents of Laken Riley, the nursing student in Athens, Georgia murdered while jogging around campus by an illegal immigrant. And, recently Larisha Sharell Thompson, a SC mother from Lexington was murdered during attempted robbery by 6 illegal immigrants. Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell "The Salem Home Demonstration Club's Household Guide" The name inside the booklet, dated 1951, claims Suzanne as the owner. The handy guide contains 1001 helpful tips covering such topics as baking, canning, business law, kitchen measures, US Presidents and postal rates. The president at the time was Harry Truman, who was followed by Dwight Eisenhower. A stamp to mail a letter cost 3 cents. If you are seriously injured, CALL YOUR DOCTOR and he will close up his office and come visit you. Think back to 1951. Some folks did not have indoor plumbing or electricity. A television was a rarity. Name all of the plug-in appliances that have been invented since 1951! Electric can openers and tooth brushes come to mind. Can you recall any of the local merchants who sponsored this dandy little booklet? SALEM: Abercrombies Shopping Center, Talley's Self Service, R.R. Bearden Groceries, Feeds & Hardware WALHALLA: Belk-Gallant Company- "Walhalla's largest and best Department Store." AND.... all the phone numbers were just four digits with no area codes. Bring back the Salem Home Demonstration Club, I say. I could use practical advice on using my phone. Hey! Maybe I could finally access my 8 track tape collection!
