I still see the empty textile buildings abandoned when those jobs were sent overseas to factories who offered cheaper labor.  When Americans choose to purchase an imported product that costs less, more than just American jobs are lost.  The true value in an imported cheaper product is immeasurable.   LRMartin

Health Tip:  It is said “motion is lotion” for the joints.  Regular exercise builds muscle strength, promotes circulation, memory,  and helps your mental state of well being.  Set aside time for exercise.  Your body and you will be glad you did.  Take the time!
Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell    The Centennial Lawn Party -   The Seneca Woman's Club Among the best dressed and cutest attendees at the Garden Party to support the upkeep of the 100 year old Ballenger House were "Tamasseans" Silvana Baez, Janet & Dan Manhardt, and of course, darlin' Miz Jeannie! THE FOOD:  the most delicious BBQ thanks to Mike Graham and his crew from Oakway; platters of appetizers and salads; fresh shrimp cocktail and selections of tempting desserts.  I am so proud of Oconee County for supporting our Woman's Club!    Rather than tearing the HBH (Historic Ballenger House) down, women donate their dough and their time to its upkeep.  Yearly membership is $25 and supports a variety of classes and programs.  Over the years, the HBH has hosted etiquette classes for teenagers, as well as events for children.  Monthly meetings for women invite writers, poets, and authors to be speakers. I encourage all ladies, but especially newcomers to Oconee, to visit the Seneca Woman's Club.  These are the friendliest gals that you will EVER meet!  Trust me, there is NOT ONE SNOOTIE HOOTIE GAL (SNG). -- (If the club contained SNG's, you KNOW that I would never depart the rarified air of Tamassee to attend! Love Ya All! MizJeannie                                                                                                                                         ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton  Hester         LADY HAD SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN ON 1979 TAMASSEE-SALEM TEAMS - (The following story was in the February 21, 1979 Keowee Courier). . .Mrs. Bea Alexander of Salem has seven grandchildren who are members of this year's Tamassee-Salem High School basketball teams. She and her grandchildren were recognized during Homecoming activities following Friday night's games. . .Her grandchildren are Diane Head, Tammy Alexander and Kim Alexander, who are members of the varsity girls' team; Ron Alexander, who is a member of the varsity boys' team; Mike Alexander, who is a member of the jayvee boys' team; and Linda Alexander and Brenda Alexander, who are members of the jayvee girls' team. . .(Footnote written by Ashton Hester: At the invitation of Tamassee-Salem Principal Sam Bass, I attended the Homecoming games and ceremony and took a picture of Mrs. Alexander and her seven grandchildren as they were being honored. The picture was in this same issue of the Keowee Courier. I always thought this was one of the Courier's most amazing sports stories ever.

Journeys met: I met Peg a few years ago as I transitioned from my nursing career into retirement. It was and still is such a blessing to know I shared her last year of life and Christ values. The last day I cared for her I could tell she was feeling down.  I tried to brighten her spirit by saying “ I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help!”  Her eyes brightened and she continued, “ My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth.  He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber….”  Peg continued to recite the rest of Psalm 121. Peg shared strength and faith  on her last day that still amazes me.  Cherish the people you meet on your journey.  LRM
Thank-you Jazzy Jeff 107.9!    LRM

EDITOR: Earth Day began in 1970 as a world-wide effort to raise awareness of careless pollution, destruction of animal habitats, and total disregard for our earth’s creatures and resources.   Fortunately, the effort continues today through individuals and many nonprofit organizations like the Palmetto Trail, Sierra Club, OPUS Trust, Foothills Trail, and more, because not much has changed.  Money often wins the highest bid against land and water protection.  We must continue teaching conservation and preservation. We must be the voice for the animals and trees that cannot.  We must “speak for the Trees” as the Lorax said!  LRMartin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell  An Exotic Adventure Close to Home  Where can we visit for a whirlwind adventure on a Thursday between 10 and 3?  -- The lower level of the Walhalla Library is like a MAGIC CARPET ride to anywhere in the world, and to phantasmagorical points beyond! My first impression was a palpable sense that this was a special place- like a church.   The three rooms were  endowed with kind and caring workers. These busy bees stocked and organized books, but rather than being annoyed by queries and interruptions,  the workers seemed to be delighted to discuss authors and genres.  Kudos to Nancy and Beth.  Both women were so patient in helping me search for my favorite authors. When it was time to leave, a handsome and helpful man, Jared, pleasantly toted my three boxes of books to my truck. Here's a little secret!  Some of my purchases will be birthday and Christmas gifts!  Miz Jeannie sends you love today and everyday!

EDITOR: Lent is almost over.  If you vowed a token sacrifice to deny yourself, the end is in sight. This week is Holy week leading to the joy of Easter morning.  Christians around the world will partake of special services that will reflect the last days of Jesus Christ on earth.  Christ had only 33 years to fulfill his heavenly Father’s plan.  We have to wonder how much time each of us has to fulfill God’s purpose.  Time is a finite gift.    How we spend it is our choice and will be seen in what we leave behind.  How we live can share the timeless gift of Christ throughout all generations.  Easter is never over. LRM

Health Tip:   From GOOD ENERGY by Casey Means, MD:  Industrial refined vegetable and seed oils such as canola oil, sunflower, corn, soybean, grape seed, safflower, peanut and cottonseed are BAD ENERGY foods.  They are high in omega-6 fats which can lead to inflammation.  Omega-3 fats are the healthy fats  squeezed from the plants such as olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, and butter from the animal product.  Creating refined oils is an intensive process requiring unhealthy solvents, heating, de-waxing, and bleach. If you want to lose your appetite you are encouraged to watch a video to see how canola oil is processed.
Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell   Miz Shirley's 90th Birthday                 "This is my best birthday ever!"  declared Shirley Burrell. Her daughter Debbie had decorated the table in such elegance.  First, she placed a charger (a large plate which no food touches).  Then came the dinner plate and next came the salad dish.  A soup bowl topped it all.  Delicate pink flowers and  tiny twinkling lights set the scene aglow.  A special surprise guest was Mrs. Ann Whited, wife of our former much loved minister, who came all the way from Florence.  "Well, I declare to my soul," said I to me, This is a ladies party! But, in marched two extremely handsome gentlemen. Scott and Luke Rogers brought a stunning bouquet of ruby red roses and hugs for Miz Shirley.  Who will turn 90 next?  I'm glad it's NOT ME, because I've got more column to write to you!  Hmmm... there is a darling lady who turned 90 last year, and we missed celebrating her special day.  Audrey, You're Next!  Oh!  You sons & daughters of the foothills! Let's start celebrating each other more often!  Time to stow away more precious memories! Miz Jeannie loves you!

EDITOR: People new to our area often relay to me how friendly and welcoming our Tamassee-Salem area is and how they love being a part of this wonderful community.  With growing development all over our county, that feeling of hometown-welcoming-and community is threatened.  Consider land preservation.   When farm lands become cookie-cutter little boxes and prime soil is underneath concrete and large buildings we will destroy the place we all love.  We live in a special community, and it is still a wonderful place to call home.  LRMartin

Health Tip:   GOOD ENERGY by Casey Means, MD  is full of valuable tools for better health. I will share several over the next few weeks: Bad Energy Foods:  “Cutting the holy trinity of  three ingredients will change your health: 1.  Refined added sugar.  2.  Refined industrial vegetable and seed oils and 3. Refined grains.”   “ Refined added sugar causes astronomically more deaths and disability  per year than COVID-19 and fentanyl overdoses combined.”   I overheard someone say, “ we should have to have a prescription for sugar.”   Look at labels for hidden sugars.  Sodas are loaded with high fructose sugar.  These types of sugars stop our body from feeling satisfied. Thus, we are constantly wanting to be fed.  Sugar is addictive!  ( I think of a fast food chicken place that the line is constant.. Addictive)
Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell   Missing Missy                                    In this close snip community, we have learned to depend on each other. We depend on good businesses because the owners are friendly and kind. The prices are reasonable and the businesses are convenient. I’m sad to inform you that the Mister & Missy beauty salon will now only be in Seneca. The location is across from the credit union behind the Lowes. You can call Missy at 864-784-5049 to make an appointment and to check her hours. We’d like to support our hometown friends so I hope when you’re getting your Easter hairdo that you will visit our darling Missy!  Much love Miss Jeannie
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton  Hester                                       NEW OCONEE CREEK SCHOOL OPENED IN 1915 - (The following story was in the January 20, 1915 Keowee Courier). . .The Oconee Creek school opened last Monday with a good attendance, the school being in charge of Miss Kate Smith. . .Oconee Creek is a new school district, (*) and the patrons of the school are to be congratulated upon their efforts at educational advancement in their community. . .At the present, school is being held in the store of W.J.O. Ray, but a new and modern building with two good-sized rooms will be erected in the near future. Plans have already been prepared and active work will begin at once. It is hoped that the new building will be ready for use within the next six weeks. . .J.L. Hall, W.M. Murphree and J.M. Hunnicutt are the trustees of this district. . .(*) - Back then each rural school, and each school system in the towns of Seneca, Walhalla and Westminster, constituted a school district, and the eligible voters of each district elected a three-man (no women) board of trustees to oversee the school's operation. There were approximately 77 school districts in Oconee County in 1915. It wasn't until 1951 that the Oconee County School District consisting of all the schools in the county was formed.

EDITOR: Little things we do each day affect our overall life.   Like striking a match in a dry forest, we each have the ability to consider the consequences of our actions, or lack of.  We can mindfully prevent disaster or cause destruction. Book Recommendation:  GOOD ENERGY by Casey Means, MD with Calley Means:  Feel Better, Decrease Chances of Disease, Age Well.  Our health or lack of health is often found at the end of our fork, when we eat, what we eat, and not in a magic pill bottle.  Dr. Means offers reasons behind chronic disease and how to make changes for a healthier life.
Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell   KEEP UP WITH STREAKS IN 2025            Well, you did it again!  You messed up with keeping the fantastic New Years Resolution to jog, so you might as well just try again in 2026!  As the French say, "Au Contraire," which means on the contrary.  The new concept is to count your successful performances as part of a STREAK.  You jogged four days and then fiddling with the taxes and punishing rain prevented any more jogging that week.  The next time jogging strikes you, start a new streak! See how many days you can keep it going this time.  I like this idea, and we can apply it to many challenges! Miz Jeannie loves you forever and likes you for always.  Thank goodness for NEW Starts!                                                                                                                               ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester    TAMASSEE-SALEM STUDENTS MEMBERS OF GOVERNOR'S ALL-STAR BAND - (The following story was in the December 7, 1994 Keowee Courier). . .Matthew Cannon and TJ Harlos, members of the Tamassee-Salem Eagle High School Band, have been chosen as members of the 1994 Governor's All-Star Band. They were selected from among several hundred nominees from across the state on the basis of their band director's recommendation and their accomplishments as band members. . .The Governor's All-Star Band, which consists entirely of South Carolina high school juniors and seniors, was chosen to perform at the 28th Annual Carolighting Ceremony on the State House grounds on Sunday evening, November 27. The ceremony marks the official beginning of the Christmas season in the Palmetto State. . .Matthew, who is a senior, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Loyde Cannon of Salem, TJ, a junior, is the son of Robin Harlos and Ricky Murphy of West Union.

Prayer:  Thou who art over us, Thou who art one of us, Thou who art.  Give me a pure heart, that I may see thee;  a humble heart , that I may hear thee; a heart of love, that I may serve thee;  a heart of faith, that I may abide in thee. Community News   The Meal  and Gathering provided by the Seventh Day Adventist and Salem Methodist churches  on March 29, 2025 at 5PM at the Community Center was greatly attended and many food cans were collected to be donated to the food pantry for people in need.  Music was provided by singers and musicians of the Boones Creek Baptist Church.   The community gathering is a time to meet your neighbor, network with churches and enjoy a delicious meal.  While there you might find opportunities you are not aware of.  There are many resources available to help individuals in need, and especially individuals or families trying to find a better life.  If you are struggling in life, in marriage, drugs or alcohol, mental or physical health, there are resources to help.  I want to recommend, if you are not associated with a church, please start visiting churches in our area and see where you feel the most at home.  No church is perfect because it is made up of imperfect people, just like you and me.  Churches are made up of people trying to live each day  as  Christ taught us to love one another and to forgive one another, for we all fail.   LRM

EDITOR:  It is planting time!  Each day we plant seeds in the minds of our families, friends, children, and future grandchildren.   If we think it is OK to listen to trashy songs and movies and talk like the “movie stars” on those programs, we are planting weeds whether we realize it or not.  If we litter and do not try to recycle we are planting more weeds.  Our actions and words should be seeds, not weeds.   Consider each day and every season an opportunity to plant good seeds to everyone we meet.  We cannot recreate the Garden of Eden, but we can try to shoo away from the serpents.  What are you planting in your garden?    LRMartin                                                    TOWN of SALEM: 5 Park Avenue  Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM.                      Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell   Recess 2025
What a chore it is to establish an exercise routine; and in contrast how deliciously simple it was to establish exercise patterns while we were growing up when we were youngsters. We anticipated leaving school and connecting with our neighbors at home. We didn’t have to call around to some players they immediately appeared with the balls and bats and the chalk for hopscotch! We teamed up, and if the activity bored us we could switch to pitching softball or building a secret clubhouse or tearing down the boys’ secret clubhouse. The activity ceased when the moms called us for dinner. Why don’t we reestablish recess! Instead of driving to a far off subdivision, buddy up with neighbors and agree to meet casually at a convenient hour and location just to be active. When the sun begins to set the ones of us who are moms will convince the ones of us who are dads to go pick up some takeout dinner.  Miss Jeannie wishes you an easy breezy life without a lot of phone calls and driving around. I love you now. Go out and play.  Miss Jeannie loves you!

CHURCH NEWS                                                                                     Sharing the love of Christ is the church in action.   Even missing fellowship in the church while you are caring for friends and loved ones is Christ in action.  How we live each day is what others will see as Christ in each of us.   I do not see nor hear Christ in sour faces, finger pointing, gossiping, brow beating,  and witch calling. These actions I fear turn others from the Christ we say we serve.  Zealots caused innocent people to be torched or drowned in the past in the name of religion.  Pray, speak the truth in love and action and allow God to work in the hearts of others.   LRM

Our  Local Tamassee-Salem SC Area News each Monday except holidays                                          Contact: [email protected]                  Distributed to local businesses, town hall, library.                            Volume 8 Issue 13                                                                                  Week of March 10, 2025                https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/oldsalempost-blog                         Lynne Martin Publishing
EDITOR:   Mistakes travel quickly.  I made one in my editorial last week when I printed that the new Picket Post Produce would be located across the road from the original spot on the community grounds. But, the community grounds will remain as is and must operate as a non-profit.  Now we all know correct information!  It is a pleasure to report how heart-warming to see hundreds of people turn out to support Sam and the future Picket Post Produce this past Saturday, March 8th. Cars packed the  road sides along  highway 11 and Station Cove Roads. Lines were long for raffles and hot dogs!  Jazzy Jeff of Sony 107.9 broadcast live on site from 10-2.  He said it all when he said, “This is community!”   I hope to see you this weekend at more great community opportunities listed here in the Old Salem Post!  No mistakes —-This is community!  LynneRMartin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell    Inspirations from Maple LEAVES                       According to Maple Ridge High School's 1965 student annual, Maple Leaves , the most popular activity for girls was Future Homemakers of America Club, with 84 members.  I wish I could contact the  women of the Senior Class of MRHS '65.  How did being  homemakers work out for you? As you were graduating, The Feminine Mystique    by Betty Friedan flashed a spotlight on inequality for women.  Professional females shocked the workplace by suddenly wearing pants suits.  Reliable birth control pills were available. And many women were demanding equal rights and equal pay.  If you ask me, the most satisfying future for families includes a mother with the opportunity to stay home to raise her babies and an honest, hardworking irresistibly lovable  father to provide for the family.  I hope that all the husbands loved and respected you.  I hope all of the fresh faced young men returned unscathed from Vietnam and that your reality surpassed your most lavish dreams.  Until the 1970's your life paralleled the life your mother lived.  Then in just a few short years everything changed. Your dedication to The Future Homemakers of America Club is duly noted.  I cannot think of a more important goal then, or now, than blasting off with the future destination of a HAPPY HOME!   Love Miss Jeannie.

CHURCH NEWS                                                                                     Lent– the time from Ash Wednesday until Easter morning, representing the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness.  Jesus sought the wilderness fasting and praying to draw closer to the Father.  He endured temptations.  Many Christians recognize these 40 days (not including Sundays) to seek a closer walk with our Father.  Through “giving up” something, when we feel that void, we are reminded daily of the life-giving sacrifice of Jesus Christ.                      LRM                                                                                         Salem Seventh-Day Adventist Church located 240 W Main St , Salem,  cordially invites you to join us every Saturday at 9:30AM.  You are also invited to an Agape Feast and Communion Service (foot washing, bread and grape juice) at the Salem SDA Church fellowship hall Friday April 18, 2025 at 5:00PM. Thank you for that message of conviction that speaks directly to the heart.    Thank you and continue to help us  listen.  In Jesus’ name Amen.

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell                           Love & Marriage are alive and well in Northern Oconee!   Doug Holcombe & Katie Pratt will exchange vows on March 15 at Salem Methodist Church.  A honeymoon is planned at Myrtle Beach. The couple awaits returning to Walhalla to renovate their dream house.   "I can't wait to start our life together," says Katie.  Their family also includes a Cockatiel,  a Quaker Parrot, and a "Chiweenie" Dog.  Yesterday, Doug and Katie received friends at a Bridal Shower.  It seemed to me that the gifts were mostly for the groom- mops, buckets, laundry baskets, all manner of scrubbing and cleaning gadgets!   Doug, I'm teasing you!   ATTENTION!   We need more Brides and Grooms and more celebrations of people being in LOVE!  Gentle Reader:  I need you to think of single people, and I need you to MATCH THEM UP. If every reader matched just one couple, just think of the LOVE we would be spreading.  AND think of all of the Wedding Cake that we would eat! I shared with the children and adults how I left a plant I have loved  outside in the cold.  The evidence of my carelessness breaks my heart. But, I have hope to restore her. That is what Christ does for us.  There is hope when we allow his love in our hearts to restore our relationship with others and with him.  2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.            Lynne R Martin
