EDITOR: It is sad to see division in our country over illegal immigrants who have come to America. I am certain many illegal immigrants are wonderful people. It is always those few who ruin it for everyone. My thoughts are with the parents of Laken Riley, the nursing student in Athens, Georgia murdered while jogging around campus by an illegal immigrant. And, recently Larisha Sharell Thompson, a SC mother from Lexington was murdered during attempted robbery by 6 illegal immigrants. We should not be divided but stand united against criminal activity in America. LR Martin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell "The Salem Home Demonstration Club's Household Guide" The name inside the booklet, dated 1951, claims Suzanne as the owner. The handy guide contains 1001 helpful tips covering such topics as baking, canning, business law, kitchen measures, US Presidents and postal rates. The president at the time was Harry Truman, who was followed by Dwight Eisenhower. A stamp to mail a letter cost 3 cents. If you are seriously injured, CALL YOUR DOCTOR and he will close up his office and come visit you. Think back to 1951. Some folks did not have indoor plumbing or electricity. A television was a rarity. Name all of the plug-in appliances that have been invented since 1951! Electric can openers and tooth brushes come to mind. Can you recall any of the local merchants who sponsored this dandy little booklet? SALEM: Abercrombies Shopping Center, Talley's Self Service, R.R. Bearden Groceries, Feeds & Hardware WALHALLA: Belk-Gallant Company- "Walhalla's largest and best Department Store." AND.... all the phone numbers were just four digits with no area codes. Bring back the Salem Home Demonstration Club, I say. I could use practical advice on using my phone. Hey! Maybe I could finally access my 8 track tape collection! I encourage you to spend time with our senior citizens. Ask them about their memories of Oconee County back in their day! Miz Jeannie loves you and says a little prayer for YOU everyday!

Healthy Choices: What you put in your ears is as important as what you put in your mouth! Negative conversations, foul language, trashy television and radio programs and music affect your thoughts and ultimately your actions. So “you are what you eat” is also “you become what you listen to.” Turn the channel to find uplifting music and helpful programs. Choose friends who are positive, helpful, and encouraging.
Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell ENAC's Successful Art & Science Camp Eagles Nest Art Center provided a variety of activities for the attendees. Classes included song writing, making guacamole, painting nature scenes and classes on local wildlife: turtles and snakes. I brought "Tobias the Box Turtle" who has been a household guest for 20 years. My neighbor, Layla Ambrose, helped to teach the lesson on snakes by portraying a sleepy snake. When kids spotted Layla stretched out on the floor in her "snake" hat, they were asked to demonstrate the right and the wrong ways to react. RIGHT WAY: Stay quiet and slowly back up. WRONG WAY: hoop and holler and jump around. When the kids annoyed the snake, Layla, the snake, would strike at them with a pool noodle.! Students were asked to teach the RIGHT WAY/WRONG WAY exercise with their families. Let's hope simply practicing the RIGHT technique will help us co-exist with our reptile neighbors! Miz Jeannie wishes a safe and happy summer to all and closes with a joke: The elementary school lunchroom served up peanut & jelly sandwiches one day, and a 3rd grader commented, "It's about time they made us a home cooked meal around this place!"
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester ROAD FROM S.C. 11 TO STATE PARK CONSIDERED TWICE BUT NEVER BUILT - (The following story was in the August 22, 1984 Keowee Courier). . .The possibility of constructing a new road from Highway 11 to Oconee State Park is again being considered, according to Highway Commissioner Blake Griffith of West Union. . .Griffith said he has brought the project before the Highway Commission's Maintenance and Construction Committee, and it is "one of the things we're looking at". . .This road, which would pass near historic Oconee Station, has long been discussed. In fact, in 1978 it was approved for construction, with financing to come largely from federal funds from the S.C. Appalachian Council of Governments (COG). However, a survey of the terrain over which the road would pass found that it was much rougher than anticipated, and this would drastically increase the cost. Thus, the project was abandoned. . .The road was to have been named in honor of Bruce Rochester, who had played a prominent role in the development of Oconee County during the past two or three decades. When the project was abandoned, Highway 130 from Seneca to Salem was named in his honor instead. . .Griffith said this week that, if the Highway 11-Oconee State Park Road project is again attempted, federal funds from COG would again be pursued. . .(Footnote written by Ashton Hester: Once again, the new road was not built. But who knows? Maybe someday!?)

EDITOR: School is out and summer time is upon us. It is time for freedom from tight schedules and to enjoy the kids and grandkids. It is time to go on an adventure and get out in God’s beautiful creation. Pack a peanut butter sandwich, fruit, and water and hit a hiking trail to a waterfall. Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell Laughing Out Loud! *I married Mr. Right. I just did not not know that his first name was ALWAYS. *George hasn't spoken to his wife in 5 months. ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester REVENUE OFFICERS RAID STILL BUT CAN'T CATCH BILLY GOAT - (The following story was in the April 14, 1915 Keowee Courier). . .Last Thursday, April 8th, Revenue Officers H.W. Murph and A.T. Reid raided in the Salem section of the county. About five miles north of Salem they destroyed a distillery outfit, but no one was captured, the plant being cold at the time and no one about the premises. . .They destroyed about 800 gallons of beer, seven fermenters, flake stand and doubler. The copper still had been removed from the place. . .They were not able even to capture the Marino billy goat that meandered about the place as though he was a lord's proprietor, clanging his bell as he skipped about. . .(Footnote written by Ashton Hester: The Courier's Little River correspondent (who was not named) also mentioned the above incident in his column, as follows). . .We have often heard of “Billy the goat” holding sway. This seems to be the case on the east side of Smeltzer mountain, where some riding deputies came in on a mountain blind tiger “Billy” the past week. . .“Billy,” with some thousand gallons of beer, was all they found. As they had no authority nor desire to molest the quadruped for State or United States offense, they retreated, leaving Billy. . .One of the raiders affirmed that Billy's horns were three feet long, and the last they saw of him he was wading to his knees in beer, looking over the spoils, and now and then sniffing some of the mountain beer.

EDITOR: This Memorial Day morning I heard wonderful patriotic songs. on 96.7 Christian Radio, the Good News network. One moving song was “America the Beautiful.” American men and women have given their lives for us to see the beauty of America “from sea to shining sea.” There truly is no place like our home in America, the greatest nation in this entire world. Let us be grateful for our home and for those who gave their lives for our freedom to pray that God will continue to “shed his grace on thee” and Lynne R Martin Town of SALEM: 5 Park Avenue Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM. Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell A Warning from Two Dead Doctors I have known Marty and Jon since college days. In their seventies, when they slid into dementia, these two INTERNISTS had a serious conversation about their abominable states of health. As privileged practitioners, they had availed themselves of the latest medical advice. Consequently, they maintained their bodies with elective surgeries (to improve golf swings and tennis serves) as well as standard repair for out-of-kilter backs and knees. The conclusion these two brilliant scientists shared was: "We believe that the cumulative HOURS (CHA) that we spent under anesthetic probably caused our dementia." Think about it! Fifty years ago, Alzheimer's and senior dementia were NOT an epidemic and people had fewer surgeries. Have YOU heard experts link CHA and mental decline? Neither have I. Could keeping this secret have to do with MONEY? Miz Jeannie loves all of Y'All and encourages you to take care if your bodies with natural products, exercise, and heaps of hugs!
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester SALEM MAN WAS LUCKY BUYER OF PICK-UP TRUCK AT AUCTION - (The following story was in the May 17, 1945 issue of the Keowee Courier). . .Two trucks that were seized in Westminster last month loaded with over 500 gallons of moonshine liquor were sold at the Oconee court house last week by Sheriff Sam H. Hunnicutt, in what turned out to be one of the most unusual auction sales ever held here. . .When the auctioneer called for a bid on one of the trucks, a 1941 Ford pick-up, he was answered with a roar of voices bidding the OPA ceiling price of $369.04. The names of all the bidders were placed in capsules and a three-year-old boy drew out the lucky name, that of K.Z. Green, of Salem. . .The same procedure was followed in the sale of the other truck, a two-ton Dodge truck which sold for $568.69. W.T. Price, of Westminster, was the successful bidder this time. (Footnote written by Ashton Hester: Of course, the reason for this great amount of interest in purchasing the trucks was that--like so much else--trucks were strictly rationed during the war.) News: The Mother’s Day Tea Afternoon on May 10, 2025 held at the Eagles Nest Art Center Social Hall found a room of filled with well-dressed ladies and fancy little ladies. Some wore hats and gloves for the occasion. Tables were elegantly set with vintage china and decorated with fresh flowers, or eclectic art as each hostess displayed her own unique design. There was a special Happy Birthday table honoring Sara Murphree surrounded by her family. Memories were made and preserved in front of a photo spot. After the tea and delicious buffet of goodies, little ladies were treated to a manicure and a craft by the teenage ladies while the older ladies enjoyed speaker Malibu Jackman. Thank you Kayla Lusk for planning and coordinating this successful event for the second year!
Health Tip: Meal time is the best time together around the family table. Share devotions and scripture and invite children to speak and pray. It is also a good time to review what to do in case of disaster, severe weather or fire. Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell Did You Ever Cause Trouble in a Library? I was asked to leave the Greenville Tech Library because I was looking too hard for a technical article. I KNEW this information was in the stacks! But apparently, I was ANNOYING the librarian. Moreover, I wasn't a lowly student! I was an instructor. Of course, there were many other times over the years, when I deserved to be booted for whooping and giggling. My past experiences left me totally UNPREPARED to be obsessed and in love with the Thursday Used Book Sale (TUBS) at the Walhalla Library! First of all, at most used book sales, the shopper must unpack dusty cartons containing a hodgepodge to find a book of value. At our TUBS, books are shelved, as they would be in a functioning library. Secondly, at TUBS the most popular books, sale books, and free books are attractively displayed at the entrance. Next, THERE IS HAPPY JABBERING! Lovely volunteers greet visitors to help them locate their selections. And finally, after one pays for purchases, JARED SMITH pleasantly delivers your treasures to your vehicle. I appreciate all of the volunteers, but Jared makes visitors feel especially welcome! Oh! Friends, I encourage you to visit TUBS! Miz Jeannie loves you lots! Love you! Miz Jeannie

I Remember A Favorite Mother Story: Rosa Lee was an “old maid” when she finally married. Being older in years she was so excited to become pregnant. When the time came for delivery, Rosa birthed a stillborn child. Heartbroken, Rosa still had to recover the same as any other woman and shared a semi-private hospital room. The woman in the bed beside Rosa birthed a child she did not intend to keep. Rosa did not go home with empty arms. The woman gave her baby to Rosa.

Mother’s Day 2025 is Sunday, May 11: It is traditional to wear a white rose on your dress or lapel if your mother has died. Or, wear a red rose bloom if your mother is still alive. I remember when my mom would go out in our Salem back yard to pick red rose blooms for each of us to wear to church. I remember when my mom had to change to a white rose. My mom has passed on, I too will be picking a white bloom from my yard remembering my precious mom! LRM

I remember my family members worked in textile mills. I still see the empty textile buildings abandoned when those jobs were sent overseas to factories who offered cheaper labor. Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell The Centennial Lawn Party - The Seneca Woman's Club Among the best dressed and cutest attendees at the Garden Party to support the upkeep of the 100 year old Ballenger House were "Tamasseans" Silvana Baez, Janet & Dan Manhardt, and of course, darlin' Miz Jeannie! THE FOOD: the most delicious BBQ thanks to Mike Graham and his crew from Oakway; platters of appetizers and salads; fresh shrimp cocktail and selections of tempting desserts. I am so proud of Oconee County for supporting our Woman's Club! Rather than tearing the HBH (Historic Ballenger House) down, women donate their dough and their time to its upkeep. Yearly membership is $25 and supports a variety of classes and programs. Over the years, the HBH has hosted etiquette classes for teenagers, as well as events for children. Monthly meetings for women invite writers, poets, and authors to be speakers. I encourage all ladies, but especially newcomers to Oconee, to visit the Seneca Woman's Club. These are the friendliest gals that you will EVER meet! Journeys met: I met Peg a few years ago as I transitioned from my nursing career into retirement. It was and still is such a blessing to know I shared her last year of life and Christ values. The last day I cared for her I could tell she was feeling down. I tried to brighten her spirit by saying “ I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help!” Her eyes brightened and she continued, “ My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber….” Peg continued to recite the rest of Psalm 121. Peg shared strength and faith on her last day that still amazes me. Cherish the people you meet on your journey. LRM

EDITOR: Earth Day began in 1970 as a world-wide effort to raise awareness of careless pollution, destruction of animal habitats, and total disregard for our earth’s creatures and resources. Fortunately, the effort continues today through individuals and many nonprofit organizations like the Palmetto Trail, Sierra Club, OPUS Trust, Foothills Trail, and more, because not much has changed. Money often wins the highest bid against land and water protection. We must continue teaching conservation and preservation. We must be the voice for the animals and trees that cannot. We must “speak for the Trees” as the Lorax said! LRMartin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie by Jeannie Barnwell An Exotic Adventure Close to Home Where can we visit for a whirlwind adventure on a Thursday between 10 and 3? -- The lower level of the Walhalla Library is like a MAGIC CARPET ride to anywhere in the world, and to phantasmagorical points beyond! My first impression was a palpable sense that this was a special place- like a church. The three rooms were endowed with kind and caring workers. These busy bees stocked and organized books, but rather than being annoyed by queries and interruptions, the workers seemed to be delighted to discuss authors and genres. Kudos to Nancy and Beth. Both women were so patient in helping me search for my favorite authors. When it was time to leave, a handsome and helpful man, Jared, pleasantly toted my three boxes of books to my truck. Here's a little secret! Some of my purchases will be birthday and Christmas gifts! Miz Jeannie sends you love today and everyday!
