Magic hour at the park today. There was an eagle, being chased by crows before returning to perch on this grand tree, and then a chat with a stranger, Peter, who was feeding many, many crows before they took to the air.

In the 1940s, Maplewood Flats was inhabited by a community of squatters living in dilapidated cabins along the area's intertidal zone. Artist Ken Lum’s Vancouver Art Gallery-commissioned piece, From shangri-la to shangri-la, of replicas of these shacks were moved from the Shangri-La Hotel downtown to this site after the 2010 Olympics.

12.17.17 | "Within our darkest night, you kindle the fire that never dies."
During Sunday's Quiet Christmas service, I found the privacy, permission, and nerve to break down and weep in a dimly blue-lit sanctuary of soft voices and instruments. I wrote a small prayer down and together, we let the flame take it skywards, surrounded by many others also seeking comfort in this time. It was a sustained moment of heartbreak, renewal, and spirit amidst cheek staining and stiffening tears. Grief after loss can take some time to root and find gentle release as it has over my last few weeks. Vulnerability and openness are part of that process so I share this.

This other cedar was also magnificent in the way limbs emanated from its trunk.
I discovered this Kahlil Gibran quote - The heart’s affections are divided like the branches of the cedar tree; if the tree loses one strong branch; it will suffer but it does not die; it will pour all its vitality into the next branch so that it will grow and fill the empty place - and remember how my father holds a number of his books in his library.
