1.
Been scrupulously avoiding the mainstream obits RE Amiri Baraka. Still could’t help noting repeated headlines throwing up the politically suspect tag ‘Polarizing Figure”. Guess that means our dude was Electro Magnetic and As Charged.
Oh they think long and hard about throwing shade...

He was what we all want to be, a writer who was trusted by readers even when they didn’t agree with him, because they knew he was on their side. BuzzFeed music editor Matthew Perpetua put it best on Twitter: “I hope it’s not lost on my peers that people care SO MUCH about Ebert cos he was the rare critic who wrote smart stuff for normal people.” So many music critics fall prey to the temptation to speak only to people like themselves. They lard their writing with obscure references, and harangue those who don’t have the luxury to think about records all day for their lack of adventurousness and know-how. And then they wonder why nobody cares to read them.

I talked to one of the guys who mixed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to potentially mix this album, and I was like, 'I love that album so much, I love the production, and I love the way it feels— but does it have to be so hot?' It literally sounds lower-fi than it probably did when they were working on it because it’s mastered so fucking hot. I was like, 'Why did you do that?' And he was like, 'That’s just what Kanye wants. He just wants it to be louder than Jay’s album.' I love that.

The sound experience which I prefer, to all others, is the experience of silence. And the silence almost everywhere in the world now... is traffic. If you listen to Beethoven or to Mozart, you see that they're always the same. But if you listen to traffic, you see it's always different.

But most of all you’ll hear the echoes of modern multicultural London, of Jamaican, African, Chinese, Indian, American, Cockney and even Scottish accents. Reflections come off crumbling warehouses, dirty towerblocks, endless row terraces, unhinged nightbus rides, skunked-out cars and clattering overland trains. London: this is the defining influence on dubstep; that which gives it its tempered, edgy, compressed character. These are the echoes of a tense, intense city. This is mystical margin music. This is London, 2004.

I sympathised with the energy of the early punk scene and its trope of ‘three chords are enough to start a band’, however I thought, three’s already much too much and one tone should be more than sufficient. Polyphonic synthesizers were far out of reach at the time anyway…
