New laws in the ACT for 2024
New tree protection laws, a ban on heavyweight and boutique plastic bags and changes to the hospitality sector to improve night-time economy took effect from 1 January 2024.
Plastic bags - The ACT Government has introduced a ban on all single-use shopping bags that are made fully or partially of plastic.
Tree protection - New tree protection laws under the Urban Forest Act 2023 also took effect from 1 January 2024 to provide a stronger legal framework to protect, grow and manage Canberra’s trees.
Night-time economy - In addition, changes have been introduced to further enhance the ACT’s nighttime economy and foster a more vibrant hospitality sector.

ACT's AMA: Training at Canberra Hospital has been a "rolling crisis over decades"
With a number of Canberra Hospital training accreditations placed under review in the past few years, concerns about the hospital's reputation have been raised.
ACT Australian Medical Association President, Professor Walter Abheyeratna, highlights the endemic problem with training at the Canberra Hospital.
ABC's Adam Shirley spoke to Dr Abheyeratna on Breakfast.
Statement attributable to a Canberra Health Services spokesperson:
"The Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery Unit does not and has never had an accredited training program in the ACT, so it is incorrect to say that the unit has lost its training accreditation.
What the recent revocation refers to is the Plastic Surgery training term, which is one of a number of training terms that counts toward general medical registration for junior doctors. This was a decision by the Canberra Region Medical Education Council (CRMEC), which accredits these training terms for junior doctors.

Black Summer bushfires may have influenced the onset of rare triple-dip La Niña, study finds
Copious amounts of smoke aerosols from the 2019–20 bushfires may have contributed to the onset of the rare, triple-dip La Niña.
In a study published in the journal Science Advances, a team of researchers ran climate models with and without bushfire emissions to determine the role the months-long bushfire event played.
The idea for the study was sparked by research into emission reductions from the COVID pandemic.
Lead author John Fasullo from the National Centre for Atmospheric Research in the United States said the team intuitively thought the bushfires may have had a larger climate response than the drop in emissions that resulted from the pandemic.

ACT's top prosecutor says he was wrong to suspect federal political interference in Bruce Lehrmann case
In a dramatic about-face, the ACT's top prosecutor has told an inquiry he was mistaken to suspect political interference in the investigation of former Liberal Party adviser Bruce Lehrmann.
Shane Drumgold, the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions, is facing a fourth day of questioning in the board of inquiry into how Mr Lehrmann's case was handled.
Mr Lehrmann was accused of raping his then colleague Brittany Higgins in a parliamentary office in 2019, though his trial was abandoned late last year.
He maintains his innocence and there have been no findings against him.

Calvary Public Hospital to be taken over by ACT government to make way for new $1bn northside hospital
In a controversial move, the ACT government has announced plans to take over the running of the Catholic-owned Calvary Public Hospital.
In a statement, the government said it was allocating $1 billion towards a new hospital in Bruce at the existing Calvary site, with construction set to begin as early as 2025.
There had previously been negotiations between the government and Calvary Health Care spanning a number of months that eventually proved unsuccessful.
The government said today it would introduce new legislation to the Legislative Assembly on Thursday to enact the Health Infrastructure Enabling Bill, compulsorily acquiring the hospital's assets and effectively transitioning Calvary staff.

ACT Director of Public Prosecutions tells inquiry he suspected federal politicians may have tried to interfere with Bruce Lehrmann's prosecution
The ACT's top prosecutor feared that federal ministers may have interfered with police to try to thwart the prosecution of Bruce Lehrmann, an inquiry has heard.
Shane Drumgold's allegations that ACT detectives pressured him not to prosecute Mr Lehrmann is the main reason the ACT Board of Inquiry was established.
It is examining whether criminal justice agencies met their responsibilities in the case of Mr Lehrmann, a former Liberal Party adviser who was accused of raping Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in 2019.
Mr Lehrmann has maintained his innocence after his trial was abandoned late last year. There have been no findings against him.

Huge decline in grey-headed flying fox numbers as coastal development and fruit-netting threaten species
When Alan the grey-headed flying fox should have been escaping Canberra's winter by heading for a warmer coastal area, an injury held him back.
Wildlife carers realised he had a cyst on his wing which was stopping him from making the flight north with his colony.

An inquiry into how criminal justice agencies handled the case against former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann has heard journalist Lisa Wilkinson alleged she'd been treated unfairly by the ACT's top prosecutor.
Mr Lehrmann — who was accused of raping Brittany Higgins in a parliamentary office in 2019 — has maintained his innocence and there have been no findings against him.
His trial last year and subsequent plans for a retrial were both abandoned.
Documents tendered to the inquiry today have revealed correspondence between a lawyer for Wilkinson and ACT Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold's office in December.
