Week 15
We're starting on our proof of concept, with keyframes first, yahoo!
Had to come up with 3 keyframe tests as the first two versions didn't feel quite right. I went with Version 3 as it felt more like a warm hug, compared to a more cutesy hug in Version 1 and 2.
Added the rough background in and changed the camera angle as well.

Version 2

Version 3

Version 4 (With background)

I'll be moving on to keyframing for the next shot tomorrow. I think the workflow would be faster if another member takes over for inbetweening.

Week 14 Part 2
Working on layout of Shot 010.
Just when the lesson started, my tablet broke down. Wow, took a whole lot of time (around one half of the lesson) to work around it. Thank goodness I brought along a portable computer to draw on before I switched to using the school's Cintiq. Then I found out we could also loan a tablet from the school...
Well at least it didn't happen the day before a Viva!
The schedule is getting tight. We should start animating the proof of concept quickly.
Let’s aim to finish roughing in-betweens for shot 010!

Week 14
Started working on the colour script.
The first one is done off the bat, with no environment style to work off. It ended up looking quite muddy :(, but I like the boy’s hair here. :)
Then I moved on and worked on another version of the colour script by following Pascal Campion’s artwork. I tried to add a lighter watercolour effect and it ended up looking like Winnie the Pooh. Worked on this shot with Ms. Karen’s input as well.
Feedback from Ms. Karen:
Have a system for constructing trees. e.g. The trunk should taper from thick base to a thin top. Bottom of leaf clusters can be flat, like clouds. Have bits of leaves sticking out from the leaf clusters.
Have a variety of shapes for the crew to build the environment with. e.g. Round shapes for rocks, irregular shapes for bushes, tall slender shapes of trees, boxes for buildings.
Have a wider clearing space for parks, as it is a place for people to run around and have fun in.

Week 13
Tracking changes in the environment:
The 3rd version seems to fit better than the latest (4th) version, as it has a more painterly style. I like the light spots on the tree trunk in version four, so maybe our group could bring that over to the older design.
Still, we haven’t concluded on a final look - if we should go for a more washed out watercolour look or one that is closer to 3.
We’re handing the environment design to Martin.

Week 12
Concept background:
A version of our environment done on TVPaint itself. It took longer than expected to create Photoshop brushes on TVPaint. The layers-system on TVPaint was also quite different from Photoshop and took a while to work around them.
Process to imitate Photoshop brushes on TVPaint:
Stamp solid brush on Photoshop, save, import .png into TVPaint.
Make sure it is imported under the Custom Brush tab.
Select brush with selection tool
Cut to brush
Save brush onto custom panel before editing settings. Good to refer to pre-existing brush settings to imitate the various brush effects.

Week 11
Done with the rough version of Mom’s walk.
Notes/fixes:
Body should be more attached to the upper body. Currently the body looks like two separate volumes.
Reduce the overlap.

Week 10
Updates for our animatic! Storyboarded by Martin.
Link to older animatic
I took over the sound design for our film and the effort has paid off yay!
The gasps for the balloons, Bleu, Red and Mom are all done with my own voice. Man, it was so strange and fun to record and mix your own voice for the short.
It was quite difficult finding royalty free tracks to work with, but we did it!
Time taken to source for sounds: 1 lesson and a full night.

Week 8 (Exam Week) - 9
Construction method for Mom is up!
The layout is similar to Red’s construction method. It is quite difficult to construct Mom as her proportions are broken down into more parts than Red.
Updates after animating Mom’s walk cycle:
Keep the torso and hip section’s proportion fixed (do not squash it too much!). Squashing the upper body and hip mass together means that the spine is bending/compressing in an unnatural manner.
When the skirt moves/stretches, the skirt line should be pulled taut (a straight line). Try not to move the skirt line up too much when the skirt is taut.

Week 7
Construction method for Red is up!
I followed the layout for construction guide of Mulan’s characters, detailing the hands, facial proportions, ears, mouth and aso did a guide of building Red from scratch.
So eager to print this into a folder for my work desk! :)

Week 6 Viva!
Our first pitch for this story. The overall response from the lecturers was alright, but I personally feel that there is still a lot of work to be done, especially story wise. After all, it should be the driving point of a film.
Here are the list of things mentioned:
They liked the chalky colouring method of our characters (yay!)
They suggested that we changed Mom’s clothing colour to a lighter one.
Have more screen time for Mom as they like her character design.
Change the cart colour to a more muted one
Colourise lineart for characters
Change the ending of our story. Have a clearer resolution instead of leaving it hanging where Bleu just floats in space. Maybe have him reunite with Red.

Week 5 Part 2
Mom’s character turn around, expression sheet and poses done! It is quite a challenge trying to visualise the form for Mom’s fringe.
For future practises, it would be wise to draw a construction underneath to help with getting the form out.

Week 5
Red’s character set, with turn around, expression sheet and poses. Colouring will be passed on to Megan/Chiharu while I move on to do Mom.
Updates on Red’s character design:
We’re removing the sailor line on Red’s cape so that there’ll be less to worry about when we’re cleaning up.
Character construction coming up!

Week 4
Some sketches for our group’s logo design. Our group decided to pick the first one as it looks like a chameleon/dino and it has the colour of film rolls.
