NEW MAP: Europe 1812: French retreat from Moscow (24 October 1812) https://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/18121024/ Despite the French capture of Moscow, the Russians refused to negotiate and Napoleon eventually realized that he had no option but to withdraw. In late October 1812 the French marched southwest towards Kaluga, in the hope of taking a fresh route back west, but were halted at Maloyaroslavets. Persuaded that the Kaluga road was no longer viable, Napoleon now decided to return along the same route he had come, a path already devastated by his advance. #1810s #1812 #19thcentury #atlas #europe #europeanhistory #france #history #historyclass #historygram #historyinthemaking #historylesson #historylover #historyschool #historyteacher #maps #napoleon #napoleonic #napoleonicwars #october #october24 #frenchhistory #russianempire #peninsularwar #strategy #militaryhistory #welovehistory #worldhistory #newmap (at Maloyaroslavets) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS849mhr7XP/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 313: Battle of Tzirallum (30 April 313) https://buff.ly/2Wg5UUN Constantine’s capture of Rome established his preeminence among the three Augusti. Realizing that Constantine and Licinius were colluding against him, Maximinus Daza crossed into Europe in the spring of 313 but was decisively defeated by Licinius at Tzirallum. Maximinus was the last Roman emperor to persecute Christians; following his downfall, Christianity began to emerge as the dominant religion in the empire. #4thcentury #ancientrome #april #april30 #constantine #cartographer #constantinei #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #geopolitics #historicalplace #history #historydegree #historyfacts #historylover #historymajor #historyschool #maps #riskgame #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #teachinghistory #westernromanempire #worldatlas #newmap (at Çorlu) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSz3GTWB6AT/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 312: Battle of the Milvian Bridge (28 October 312) https://buff.ly/3md3TDJ In late 311 Constantine and Licinius secretly agreed to align against Maxentius and Maximinus Daza. Convinced that Licinius would attack Italy from the northeast, Maxentius was unprepared when Constantine invaded from the northwest. Marching out to confront Constantine’s army as it approached Rome, Maxentius was defeated and killed at the Milvian Bridge in October 312. #312 #ancientrome #milvianbridge #carta #cartography #christianhistory #4thcentury #europe #europeanhistory #geopolitics #histories #historybuff #historyinthemaking #historylesson #historynerd #constantinethegreat #mapping #maps #militaryhistory #october #october28 #roman #romancivilwar #constantine #romanempire #romanhistory #maxentius #romans #worldhistory #newmap (at Ponte Milvio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSffPvGhKIH/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 1812: Battle of Berezina (26 November 1812) https://buff.ly/3xEUvdU Suffering from the winter, exhausted supply lines, and repeated Russian attacks, the French retreat from Moscow soon degenerated into a disaster. In late November Napoleon narrowly managed to escape across the Berezina, evading a last Russian attempt to destroy his army but losing half his remaining troops. The emperor then raced back to Paris to raise new recruits while the remnants of his Grande Armée—some 10,000 of the over 400,000 who had marched on Moscow just months before—crossed out of Russia. #1810s #1812 #19thcentury #atlas #bonaparte #europe #europeanhistory #france #frenchhistory #frenchempire #frenchrevolution #historic #historisch #historyclass #historyfacts #historymaker #historymatters #historyteacher #janeausten #mapmaking #maps #militaryhistory #napoleon #napoleoni #napoleonic #napoleonicwars #november #november26 #russianempire #newmap (at Borisov, Belarus) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSYxB0Brs2W/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 311: Collapse of the Tetrarchy (10 June 311) https://buff.ly/3xslYiL In early May 311 Galerius died and was succeeded as senior Augustus by Maximinus Daza. Although Constantine and Licinius would pay lip service to this decision until late 312, Maximinus had little authority over the two Augusti and did not appoint a new tetrarch. #4thcentury #lateromanempire #ancientrome #byzantium #constantine #carta #cartografia #constantinei #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #historia #historian #historias #historical #historylesson #historymatters #historyteacher #map #maps #roman #romanafrica #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #tetrarchy #worldhistory #newmap (at Sirmium Palatium Imperiale) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSQmwLaHJCf/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 310: Maximian’s Last Stand (July 310) https://buff.ly/2TMJFoo Maximinus Daza refused to accept the rulings at Carnuntum and demanded to be made an Augustus. Reluctantly, Galerius backed down, initially acknowledging Maximinus and Constantine as ‘Sons of Augusti’ then, after Maximinus threatened to rebel, recognizing them both as full Augusti in 310. That year Constantine faced his own problems when his father-in-law Maximian emerged from retirement in Viennensis and proclaimed himself emperor again. However, Maximian found little support and was forced to kill himself when Constantine’s army arrived. #4thcentury #ancientrome #constantine #constantinethegreat #constantinei #maximian #easternromanempire #europeanhistory #gaul #historian #historias #historic #historicalmap #historisch #historybuff #historydegree #historylover #historylovers #historyschool #instahistory #maps #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romanitaly #romans #westernromanempire #worldhistory (at Arles, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR96lAYhHbX/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 1813: Sixth Coalition (3 March 1813) https://buff.ly/3BI3Gxr In early 1813, in the wake of the collapse of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia, Russian forces swept into Prussia and the Duchy of Warsaw. In late February the Prussians secretly agreed to an alliance with Russia, but would not declare war on France until Berlin was liberated. A few days later Britain and Sweden also signed an alliance, marking the beginning of the Sixth Coalition against Napoleon. #1810s #1813 #19thcentury #regencyera #carta #cartografia #europe #europeanhistory #frenchempire #germanhistory #bonaparte #historian #historie #historyinthemaking #historylovers #historymaker #historymuseum #instahistory #maps #march #march3 #militaryhistory #napoleon #napoleonic #napoleonicwars #prussia #russianempire #britishhistory #newmap #russianhistory (at Stockholm, Sweden) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR01FRjrNNW/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 308: Council of Carnuntum (11 November 308) https://buff.ly/3BADGE0 Maximian and Maxentius soon had a falling out and in April 308 Maximian took refuge with Constantine, encouraging Domitius Alexander in Africa to also break with Maxentius. That year Diocletian came out of retirement and, at Carnuntum in November, met with Galerius and Maximian in an attempt to restore stability to the empire. They agreed to appoint Licinius as a new Augustus, to confirm Constantine and Maximinus Daza as Caesars, and for Maximian to step down. For a moment an unprecedented eight emperors ruled the Roman world, but even after Diocletian and Maximian returned to retirement, a still daunting six remained. #4thcentury #ancientrome #arthistory #constantinethegreat #constantinei #diocletian #galerius #cartografia #cartography #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #historicalplace #history #historydegree #historylover #historymatters #historynerd #maps #roman #romanafrica #romancivilwar #tetrarchy #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #teachinghistory #welovemaps #westernromanempire #newmap (at Carnuntum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRqizeLAPtF/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 307: Galerius vs Maxentius (fall 307) https://buff.ly/3iibFZa Galerius rejected Maxentius’ claim to power in Rome and sent Severus to crush him in early 307. NEW MAP: Europe 302: Battle of Lingones (circa 302) https://buff.ly/35UsCDj Between 299 and 305 the Roman Empire went largely unthreatened by war, perhaps a testament to the general success of Diocletian’s reforms. One exception was in around 302, when an Alemannic raiding force almost captured Constantius at Lingones, deep within Gaul. However, Constantius soon defeated the invaders and drove them back across the Rhine, stabilizing that frontier as well. #thirdcentury #alemanni #ancientrome #germania #carta #constantine #europe #europeanhistory #gaul #historia #historie #histories #history #historydegree #historylover #historylovers #historymajor #ancientgaul #persianempire #mapmaking #maps #roman #romanemperor #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #ancientgermany #germanhistory #sarmatia #newmap (at Langres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQiXe0dgKtv/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 298: Galerius’ invasion of Persia (late 298) https://buff.ly/3vBvi35 After his failure at Carrhae, Galerius gathered a stronger force and returned to face the Persians in Armenia. In 298 he surprised and decisively defeated Shah Narseh near Satala, capturing his wife, harem, treasury, and much of his court. Galerius then invaded Persia itself and captured the capital Ctesiphon. The following year, at the Peace of Nisibis, Narseh agreed to cede territory to the Romans and restore the Kingdom of Armenia. It would be another four decades before the two empires would fight again. #3rdcentury #ancientrome #ancientarmenia #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #galerius #historia #historias #historicalatlas #historicalmaps #diocletian #histories #history #historyfacts #historyinthemaking #historylesson #historymajor #historymaker #ancientpersia #maps #roman #sasanian #sasanid #romanempire #romanhistory #tetrarchy #romans #worldhistory #newmap (at Satala) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQQUdRwAP0G/?utm_medium=tumblr

NEW MAP: Europe 296: Battle of Calleva Atrebatum (September 296) https://buff.ly/2SXPm25 With the establishment of the Tetrarchy, Constantius took command in Gaul and immediately moved against Carausius, who he expelled from the major Gallic port of Gesoriacum in the summer of 293. However, it would be another three years before Constantius was ready to launch a fleet to cross the Channel and land two armies on the British coast.
